Efficient Second Harmonic Generation of a High-power Yb-doped Fiber MOPA Incorporating MgO:PPSLT (MgO:PPSLT를 이용한 고출력 Yb 광섬유 레이저 빔의 고효율 이차조화파 변환)

  • In this paper, we report highly efficient second harmonic generation of continuous-wave Yb fiber lasers incorporating a periodically poled LiTaO3 device (MgO:PPSLT) as a frequency converter. The seed laser output from a Yb fiber master oscillator using a Fabry-Perot feedback cavity was amplified in a Yb fiber amplifier stage, yielding 28.5 W of linearly polarized output at 1064 nm in a beam with beam quality, M2, of ~1.07. Second harmonic generation was achieved by passing the laser beam through MgO:PPSLT. Under optimized conditions, we obtained 11.1 W of green laser output at 532 nm for an incident signal power of 25.0 W at 1064 nm, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 44.4%. The detailed investigation to find the optimized operating conditions and prospects for further improvement are discussed.

A Study of the Optical Fiber Sensor for sensing impact and pressure (광섬유를 이용한 충격 및 압력 센서에 관한 연구)

  • Optical fiber has many advantages, such as high reliability, long lifetime, immunity to the electromagnetic interference, high speed response and low cost. In this study, we proposed and developed an optical fiber impact and pressure sensor for prevention of accident which occurs in the automatic system or auto door. The principle of the sensor is to detect different optical intensity caused by variation of a speckle pattern due to the external perturbation. Speckle pattern appears at the end of a multimode fiber in which coherent beam propagates. The fabricated sensor in this study was tested. As a result of experiments, amplitude of the output signal isn't linear, but it has sufficient sensitivity for a sensor. Moreover, we can control sensitivity of the sensor by an amplifier at receiver. It has several advantages which are ability of detection at all point on the multimode fiber, large sensitive area, and many application areas for a sensing impact and pressure.

  • In this study, we fabricated a plastic optical fiber based sensor which can monitor the respiration of a patient. The circumference changes of the abdomen were measured using a mirror, a light source and optical detectors because the circumferences of the abdomen could be varied with respiration. The intensity of the reflected lights were measured according to the changes of distance between mirror and plastic optical fiber connected to a light source and a photodiode-amplifier system using a Y-coupler. The respiration signals of fiber-optic sensor system were compared with those of the respiratory and temperature transducers of the $BIOPAC^{(R)}$ system. It is expected that a fiber-optic respiration sensor could be developed for real time respiration monitoring during MRI procedure based on this study.

  • In this study, we have fabricated a fiber-optic dosimeter using an organic scintillator and a plastic optical fiber for measuring percentage depth dose with high energy X-ray beam. The scintillating light generated in organic sensor probe embedded in a solid water are guided by 20 m plastic optical fiber to the light-measuring device such as a photodiode- amplifier system. Using a fiber-optic dosimeter and an ion chamber, percentage depth dose curves are measured with 6 and 15 MV energies of X-ray beam whose field sizes are $2\;cm\;{\times}\;2\;cm$ and $10\;cm\;{\times}\;10\;cm$.

플라즈마 진단을 위한 다이오드레이저 기반의 Nd:YAG 레이저 개발

  • 본 연구에서는 펄스형으로 운전하는 플라즈마를 대상으로 하거나 플라즈마 특성의 빠른 변동을 파악하기 위해 1 kHz 이상의 반복율, 5 pulse burst mode와 2 J/pulse 이상의 발진특성을 갖는 Nd:YAG 레이저를 기반으로 하는 광원을 개발하기 위하여 레이저와 전원장치를 설계하였다. 전체 시스템은 MOPA(Master Oscillator Power Amplifier)형태로 구성하고 발진기는 FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating)을 반사경으로 사용한 Yb fiber 레이저를 설계하였다. 또한 설계한 레이저를 작동시킬 전원장치를 연구하였다. 정확한 스위칭과 턴온, 턴오프를 구현하기 위하여 IGBT 스위치를 적용하였고 적절한 저항을 조합하여 전류가 시간에 따라 상승하다가 스위치 턴오프에 급격히 감소하는 형태의 레이저 다이오드 구동에 적합한 삼각파와 비슷한 전류파형을 설계하였다. 추후 설계한 두 장치를 제작하여 테스트를 거친 후, VEST 내부 플라즈마 진단에 적용할 계획이다.

Design of 10 GbE Optical Communication System Using Multi Carrier Generation Module (Multi Carrier Generation Module을 이용한 10 GbE 광전송 시스템 설계)

  • In this paper, we design to generate 12.5 GHz spaced 256 number of multi-carrier generation module using 32 laser diodes. We modulate the generated multi-carrier generation module by 12.4 Gbps, and confirm the performance of optical channels passing through recirculating loop up to 1000km distance. An experimental result shows that the carrier away from the laser diode is significantly influence by noise effect.

  • An analysis is presented for super-high-speed optical demodulation by an avalanche photodiode(APD) with electric mixing. A normalized gain is defined to evaluate the performance of the optical mixing detection. Unlike previous work, we include the effect of the nonlinear variation of the APD capacitance with bias voltage as well as the effect of parasitic and amplifier input capacitance. As a results, the normalized gain is dependent on the signal frequency and the frequency difference between the signal and the local oscillator frequency. However, the current through the equivalent resistance of the APD is almost independent of signal frequency. The mixing output is mainly attributed to the nonlinearity of the multiplication factor. We show also that there is an optimal local oscillator voltage at which the normalized gain is maximized for a given avalanche photodiode.

  • 광통신이 발달하면서 보다 빠른 정보전송을 할 수 있지만 다른 전송매체와 마찬가지로 장거리 전송 시 손실이 발생하고 이러한 문제의 해결책으로 광 증폭기의 필요성이 대두 되었다. 기존의 광신호 증폭기에서는 광 신호를 전기신호 변환한 후 증폭하고 다시 증폭된 전기신호를 광신호로 변환하는 과정과 복잡한 구조는 전송시스템의 병목 문제를 유발하였다. 이러한 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 순수 광신호 증폭시스템인 어븀첨가광섬유증폭기 (EDFA)를 제작하고 EDFA의 이득평탄화를 위하여 이득평탄화 필터로 MLPFG를 제작하여 적용하였다. 제작된 EDFA는 20dB 이상의 신호 증폭을 보였다.

  • In this paper, we have developed wavelength swept laser system for the swept source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT). A laser is constructed by using the two SOAs parallel configuration, fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter(FFP-TF). The wavelength sweeps are repetitively generated with the repetition period of 50Hz. The wavelength tuning range of the laser is more than FWHM of 80nm centered at the wavelength of 1310nm and the line-width of the source is 0.12 nm.

Gain bandwidth characteristics of erbium-doped Fiber amplifiers for long-haul transmissions (에르븀 첨가 광섬유 증폭기의 장거리 전송에 따른 이득 평탄화 특성)

  • Gain characteristic of concatenated erbium-doped fiber amplifiers(EDFA) are studied with a recirculating EDFA loop. For a non-flat gain EDFA, the 3 dB gain bandwidth was reduced to 6 nm after the 20th EDFA. However, for an optimized gain flattened EDFA, in a simple configuration, the 5 dB gain bandwidth was found to be 9nm, even after the 100th EDFA, corresponding to 8000km transmission. This results suggest that the simple optimized flat gain amplifier could be a good candidate for ultra-long distance wavelength division multiplexed transmissions.
