페룰 가공용 초정밀 센터리스 연삭기 개발 (The development of Centerless Grinder for Ferrule Grinding)

  • In this study, the ultra precision centerless grinder for ferrule grinding was designed. As the good-qualified ferrule is required a precise and fine grinding, grinding machine for ferrule must have a high accuracy and a sufficient stiffness. The centerless grinder is composed of the high damping concrete bed, grinding wheel spindle unit, regulating wheel spindle unit, feeding table and dressing unit. For a newly developed centerless grinder, hydrostatic system with high precision feeding and high stiffness was proposed. The grinding and regulating wheel spindle units were composed of hydrostatic spindle and feeding table was hydrostatic table. The prototype of hydrostatic table was manufactured and tested.

  • This paper presents the process of manufacturing technology of ceramics ferrule for opitcal fiber connector. Precision zirconia ceramic ferrules is widely for high performance and low cost single mode optical fiber connectors. To polish the hole of the zirconia ceramic ferrule, the wire lapping instrument is developed and the machining experiment is conducted. Through the centerless grinding using diamond wheel the surface roughness of zirconia ceramics ferrule is below the 1$\mu$m Rmax.

  • The Ferrule for the Optical Communication Connector is the product to set the optical ares of an optical fiber very precisely. Therefore, it is required high expectations such as high dimensional precision and new including flaws. Up to new the optical instrument has been used for the defeat and shape inspection of the ferrule, but in the paper we examined the detectable defeat and expectation by using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy(RUS). The RUS is the measurement which is to excite specimen and to inspect the difference at natural frequency pattern between acceptable specimen and specimen which has some defeats. We analyzed the difference of natural frequency pattern in the experiment using Spectrum Analyzer. And we compared the results in the experiment with those in the simulation from the explicit finite elements code, Nastran.

  • In this paper, we suggested an evaluation method of cracks in a ceramic product by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. For experiment, we manufactured nondestructive measurement system by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy and measured resonance frequencies of acceptable and cracked ferrules. The evaluation criterion of ferrule is based on the comparison of resonance frequencies between acceptable and cracked-ferrule. The criterion value that defined by suggested formula is 2. By using the criterion, it is possible to evaluate both acceptable and cracked-ferrule.

  • Fiber optic connector, ferrule, is a device to connect and align fiber optics cable on fiber-optic communication system. In general $ZrO_2$ ceramic ferrule is manufactured by grinding process because the demands precision is very high. For the precision grinding machining, it is very important that structure of co-axial ferrule grinding system is optimized. In this paper, Structural analysis was performed to analyze bed and frame structure of co-axial grinding machine. Deformation and modal analysis for natural frequency was performed using ANSYS design space program to analyze structural characteristics. New improved model of bed and frame structure was proposed based on initial basic model. Therefore, we estimated the structural characteristics precision co-axial grinding machining system.

  • Ceramic ferrules which are major parts of the fiber optic connectors are requiring high precisions in grinding. After grinding, it is the problem that subsurface damages cannot be removed. The objective of this study was to analyze the grinding force and the associated stress generated in a ceramic ferrule during cylindrically external griding using finite element analysis(FEA). A two-dimensional finite element model was constructed with the grinding parameters and the mechanical properties of the ferrule as input variables. The size of the geometric model was the same with ceramic ferrule. The experimental results are investigated by SEM photograph and compared with the results from FEM. The result of FEA showed a good agreement with that of experiment.

다구찌 방법론에 근거한 초정밀 센터리스 연삭의 최적 드레싱 가공 조건 선정 (Selecting Optimal Dressing Parameters of Ultra-precision Centerless Grinding Based on the Taguchi Methodology)

  • In this study, rotary type diamond dressing system for ultra-precision centerless grinding for ferrule was developed at the first time and experiments were conducted with AE sensor and hall sensor system to verify the optimum dressing condition for ultra-precision centerless grinding for ferrule. The correlations with the condition of dressing are evaluated by AE signal analysis with root mean square (RMS) and frequency analysis. And current signals from hall sensor are also studied as a factor of dressing optimum condition selection. Dressing process was conducted to investigate the effects of depth of cut, rotating speed, and the number of overlap to select the optimum condition of rotary dressing system of ultra-precision centerless grinding machine for ferrule fabrication. In order to verify the optimum condition of dressing, AE and current signals were compared with the surface quality of dressing wheel and grinding wheel for ultra-precision ferrule grinding. All of these experiments were completed by Taguchi Methodology to reduce experimental time. Hence, the optimum condition of rotary dressing system for ultra-precision centerless grinding for ferrule fabrication can be selected following to the experiment result from signals of AE and hall sensor.

  • Weakness process can be called ferrule array and epoxy filling process at connector manufacturing process, and a lot of problems happen as think as general manufacturing process at early investment. Wished to improve this and working environment mend of worker on childhood(planning phase) and problem that is happened at done ferrule array and epoxy injection by emphasis target. By ferrule sorting and Improvement of epoxy filling process, bring authoritativeness elevation of product by fraction defective decrease of product by sized work along with productivity elevation. On the other hand, working jigs are various in characteristics of optical connector manufacturing line. There have been lots of restriction in practice because the applicability of this system is only for single type model though the network should be smooth between lines. Thus, it is not only needed the recognition of necessity in industrial line but also the development of automation system arraying ferrule and filling epoxy in the manufacturing process. It is found that the present system development enhances productivity fairly and prevents industrial disaster in the optical connector manufacturing system.

페룰가공용 무심연삭기 이송계 개발 (A Study on the Feeding System of Centerless Grinder for Machining the Ferrule)

  • In order to practicalize high precision centerless grinder for machining the ferrule, its feeding system is designed and tested. For satisfying the desired diametric tolerance and cylindricity of the ferrule, the feeding system is designed to have relatively high axial stiffness of 600 N/$\mu\textrm{m}$, high angular motion accuracy of 0.5 arcsec/mm in yaw direction and minimum resolution of 0.05 $\mu\textrm{m}$. A prototype of feeding system is built up with hydrostatic guideway and ballscrew. A linear scale with 0.05 $\mu\textrm{m}$ of resolution is used for position feedback. Experimental results show that the feeding system has the infinity of axial stiffness within the range of 1000 N and 0.3 arcsec/mm of yawing error. Also the feeding system shows obvious step response against 0.05 $\mu\textrm{m}$/step command without the lost motion or backlash. Although the vertical stiffness is reduced to 440 N/$\mu\textrm{m}$ by the elastic deformation of rail, it is good enough to use for machining the ferrule. From above, it is confirmed that the feeding system is applicable to centerless grinder for machining the ferrule.

다층 박막을 이용한 패럴 단면의 무반사 코팅 설계 및 특성 (Design and Characteristics of Anti-reflection Coating using Multi-layer Thin Film on the Ferrule Facet)

  • In this paper, we have designed the anti-reflection(AR) coating for $1400{\sim}1600$ nm wavelength range on the ferrule facet of optical connector. The low-temperature ion-assisted deposition was applied to AR coating on the ferrule facet in order to avoid damage of optical connector. We have measured the refractive index of coating film($Ta_2O_5\;and\;SiO_2$) using the ellipsometer and optimized the film thickness using the SEM and thickness measurement equipment. UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer is used to measure transmissivity of the AR coated ferrule facet. The refractive index of $Ta_2O_5\;and\;SiO_2$ is $2.123{\sim}2.125$ and $1.44{\sim}1.442$, respectively, for $1400{\sim}1600$ nm wavelength range. The transmissivity of the AR coated ferule facet is more than 99.8 % for $1425{\sim}1575$ nm wavelength range and more than 99.5 % for $1400{\sim}1600$ nm wavelength range. The return loss of the AR coated ferrule facet is 30.1 dB.
