  • The duplex stainless clad vessel with 38m & over thickness shall be performed to PWHT based on the ASME code. In this case, it is well-known that precipitators such as carbides and sigma($\sigma$) phase are formed at gram boundary between ferrite and austenite phase. Therefore, a weld test for simulating this situation has been planned and performed by 3309LMo71-1 for barrier layer and E2209Tl-1 for 2nd & over layer and then carried out to investigate the overlaid weld metal. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that PWHT should be carried out after the completion of 1st(barrier) layer and then 2 & over layer should be applied.

  • The lattice strain evolution within polycrystalline solids is influenced by the crystal orientation and grain interaction. For multi-phase polycrystals, due to potential large differences in properties of each phase, lattice strains are even more strongly influenced by grain interaction compared with single phase polycrystals. In this research, the effects of the grain interaction and crystal orientation on the lattice strain evolution in a two-phase polycrystals are investigated. Duplex steel of austenite and ferrite phases with equal volume fraction is selected for the analysis, of which grain arrangement sensitivity is confirmed in the literature through both experiment and simulation (Hedstr$\ddot{o}$m et al. 2010). Analysis on the grain interaction is performed using the results obtained from the finite element calculation based on the model of restricted slip within crystallographic planes. The dependence of lattice strain on grain interactions as well as crystal orientation is confirmed and motivated the need for more in-depth analysis.

  • The characteristics of low temperature impact toughness and stress corrosion resistance at boiling MgCl$_2$ solution of GTA and SMA weld of duplex stainless steels have been investigated. The impact toughness was highest at the GTAW weld metal and lowest at the SMAW weld, which was almost the same as that of the SMAW heat-affected zone. This was attributable to influence of austenite-ferrite phase balance, and the degree and nature of precipitation that occurred during welding. The SCC resistance of the weldments was slightly higher than that of the base metal, whereas no difference in the SCC resistance was found between two different weldments.

  • In order to establish the optimum hot forming temperature and solution heat treatment temperature for 25% chromium super duplex stainless steel weld, a commercial 25%Cr-10%Ni-4%Mo weld metal for super duplex stainless steel(UNS S32750) with different solution heat treatment conditions at $1100^{\circ}C,\;1050^{\circ}C,\;1025^{\circ}C\;and\;1000^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hours has been investigated by means of optical metallography, and estimated mechanical properties. It is found that exposure to elevated temperatures at $1050^{\circ}C,\;1025^{\circ}C\;and\;1000^{\circ}C$ except $1100^{\circ}C$ brings partial decomposition of ferrite to austenite and sigma phase, which deteriorates their properties and heat treatment at $1100^{\circ}C$ shows acceptable mechanical properties.

  • The residual stress is inevitably introduced into composites because of the mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion, and it is different in each phase. The X-ray technique can detect separately the stress in each phase, so will wield useful information for analyzing the toughening mechanisms of composites. In order to apply the law of mixture to alloy steels with composite microstructures, two phase stainless steel, consisted of ferrite (.alpha.-Fe) and austenite (.gamma.-Fe) structures, was selected. The tensile elastic deformation was loaded, and then the X-ray diffraction technique was used to measure the X-ray elastic constants, the X-ray stress constants and the phase stresses. The law of mixture was investigated and the separation of macrostress and microstress was carried out. The phase stresses (the residual stresses of phase) in each phase, which were measured by X-ray technique, was directly proportional to the applied stress. The macrostress calculated from the phase stresses by using the law of mixture was nearly equal to the applied stress.

  • The microstructural evolution in a 304 stainless steel weld during FSW was examined. The SZ and TMAZ showed typical dynamically recrystallized and recovered microstructures, respectively, The microstructural observation revealed that sigma phase was formed at the advancing side of the stir zone. A possibility was suggested that the rapid formation of the sigma phase is related to the transformation of austenite to delta-ferrite in the stir zone, from introduction of high strain and dynamic recrystallization during FSW.

  • To elucidate the characteristics of cavitation erosion of super duplex stainless steel, a cavitation erosion test, an optical microstructure, a hardness test, and a transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis were conducted. As aging time at $475^{\circ}C$ increased, the hardness of ferrite phase increased whereas that of austenite phase was nearly constant. The reason why the cavitation erosion resistance increased with an increase of aging time was due to the formation of W-rich phases (${\alpha}$') of a nanometer scale with the high hardness that were precipitated within ${\alpha}$-grains and at ${\alpha}$-grain boundaries during aging, compared with that of the solution annealed alloy.

  • API steel is used for line-pipe to transport the oil and natural gas. As the recent trends in the development of API steel are towards the use of larger diameter and thicker plate, many researches have been studied to achieve higher strength, higher toughness and lower yield ratio in API steel. However, the strength of API steel after pipe forming is changed depend on the competition of the Bauschinger effect and work hardening. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence on the Bauschinger effect for API steel by addition of V and Cu which are formed the precipitations for higher strength in API steel. The results are that the addition of V considered as a ferrite stabilizer and Cu considered as a austenite stabilizer decreases and increases the Bauschinger effect for API steel respectively.

  • The mechanical properties of a hot rolled steel is mostly governed by a cooling control on the run out table. During the cooling control, the hot rotted steel performs a metallurgical transformation(austenite ${\to}$ ferrite) which can be measured with a magnetic flux detector. The magnetic flux detector consisting of exciting and detecting coil can estimates the metallurgical transformation by measuring the variation of permeability in steel. We developed the method of detecting the magnetic property of hot rolled steel and processing the measured signal, Which makes possible to measure on-line metallurgical transformation.

  • A duplex stainless steel sheet with 1 wt.% gadolinium was fabricated for a neutron absorbing material with high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and low cost as well as high neutron absorption capability. The microstructure of the as-cast specimen has typical duplex phases including 31% ferrite and 69% austenite. Main alloy elements like chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and gadolinium (Gd) are relatively uniformly distributed in the matrix. Gadolinium rich precipitates were present in the grains and at the grain boundaries. The solution treatment at $1070^{\circ}$ for 50 minutes followed by the hot-rolling above $950^{\circ}$ after keeping the sheet at $1200^{\circ}$ for 1.5 hours are important points of the optimum condition to produce a 6 mm-thick plate without cracking.
