$FeCl_3$ solution has been used as an etchant for metal etching such as Fe, Cu, Al and Ni. In the etching process, $Fe^{3+}$ is reduced to $Fe^{2+}$ and the etching efficiency is decreased. Waste $FeCl_3$ etchant has environmental, economic problems and thus the regeneration of the etching solution has been required. In this study, HCl was mixed with the $FeCl_2$ solution and then, $H_2O_2$, $NaClO_3$ were added into the mixed solution to oxidize the $Fe^{2+}$. During the oxidation process, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was measured and the relationship between ORP and oxidation ratio was investigated. The ORP is increased with increasing the concentration of $H_2O_2$ and $NaClO_3$, and then the ORP is decreased with oxidation progress. Such a behavior was in good agreement with Nernst's equation. Also, the oxidation efficiency was about 99% when a sufficient amount of HCl and $H_2O_2$, $NaClO_3$ were added.
To investigate the constituents of antimutagenic factor from brown rice, methanol extracts were fractionated into ether, ethylacetate, buthanol and aqueous fractions. The ether fractions showed distinct antimutagenic effect and active spot were selected by silica gel chromatography. The specific activity of active spot decreased with isolation of the active components from the methanol extract. Qualitative analyses of the active spot by using various spraying reagents revealed that ninhydrin and orcinol did not develop colored reactions. But, ferric chloride, 2,7-dichlorofluorescein, antimony pentachloride, phosphomolybdic acid, bromothymol blue and rhodamine 6G led to colored reactions. These results suggested that the consitituents of active material were neither polar nor nitrogen-containing compounds and that they may contain phenolic compounds and fatty acid derivatives. Main compounds of the active spot were analyzed to be o-hydroxy benzyl alcohol(saligenin), octanoic acid(caprylic acid), 9,12-cis-octadecadienoic acid(linoleic acid), 11-cis-octadecenoic acid(oleic acid), hexadecanoic acid(palmitic acid), 1H-indole-2-carboxylic acid and 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid(phthalate) in GC/Mass spectrum, and antimutagenicity of these active compounds using standard regeant was reconfirmed in S. typhimurium reversion assay.

The CellCaSi, a porous silicate material, was tested for the removal of phosphorus (P as phosphate) in water. The effect of the CellCaSi was investigated on the basis of both particle size (under 1,2, and 4 mm) and added amount (0, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 g/1) of the CellCaSi. The removal efficiency of phosphorus was highest with a particle size of under 1 mm and also increased with an increasing amount of the CellCaSi. The pH change showed little effect on the phosphorus removal of the CellCaSi. The calcium ion was eluted from the CellCaSi into the water, while the aluminium and iron were not. The eluted calcium ion was combined with dissolved phosphorus and then precipitated. The highest removal efficiency of phosphorus was obtained by the combined addition of the CellCaSi, calcium chloride, and ferric chloride. That is, the phosphorus concentrations of 0.10 and 1.0 mg/1 decreased to 0.03 and 0.47 mg/l by the addition of the CellCaSi (1 g/l), calcium ion (30 mg/l), and ferric ion (1 mg/l) at day 8 after treatment. The water qualities at the end of the experiment were as follows: pH was 8.1 and conductivity was 318 ${\mu}$S/cm (a registered maximum conductivity of 500${\mu}$S/cm for raw and potable wafers).
Effects of the precipitation of $\sigma$ phase on the metastable pitting as a precursor of stable pitting corrosion and also on the progress of stale pitting of the 25Cr-7Ni-3Mo-0.25N duplex stainless steel were investigated in chloride solution. Electrochemical potential and current noises of the alloy were measured in 10 % ferric chloride solution ($FeCl_3$) with zero resistance ammeter (ZRA), and then analyzed by power spectral density (PSD) and by corrosion admittance ($A_c$) spectrum. With aging at $850^{\circ}C$, the passive film of the alloy was found to get significantly unstable as represented by power spectral density (PSD) and a transition from metastable pitting state to stable one was observed. In the corrosion admittance spectrum, the number of negative $A_c$ corresponding to the state of localized corrosion increased with aging, suggesting that the precipitation of $\sigma$ phase considerably degraded the passive film by depleting Cr and Mo around it at $\alpha/\sigma$ or $\gamma/\sigma$ phase boundaries, thereby leading to the initiation of the pitting corrosion. However, the Cr and Mo at $\alpha/\sigma$ or $\gamma/\sigma$ phase boundaries which were once depleted due to the precipitation of the $\sigma$ phase were partly replenished by the diffusion of Cr and Mo from the surrounding matrix with aging time longer. The initiation of pitting seems to be associated with the precipitation density of the $\sigma$ phase with an effective size needed to induce the sufficient depletion of Cr and Mo around it.

In order to explore the potential of ascorbic acid supplementation for the prevention and treatment of herpes simplex viral diseases, plaque reduction assays were performed. Ascorbic acid as well as copper chloride/ferric chloride were added to wells containing Vero cells infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), and the infectivity of HSV-1 was determined. Since copper and iron are major transition metals in human plasma, near the normal human plasma concentrations of them were used for experiments. When Cu(II) and Fe(III) were applied, there were no significant differences between virus control and Cu(II)/Fe(III)-treated groups. But, when appropriate concentrations of ascorbic acid were added to wells, meaningful differences between control and ascorbate-treated groups were found. In the presence of Cu(II)/Fe(III) at $5.8/3.7\;{\mu}M$, 72-h treatment with ascorbate at $50\;{\mu}M$ reduced HSV-1 infections to $10.77%{\pm}4.25%$ (P < 0.001) and $500\;{\mu}M$ did to $3.06%{\pm}1.62%$ (P < 0.001). Moreover, the cytotoxicities for Vero cells at those concentrations were insignificant (P > 0.05). Current recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of ascorbic acid is 60 mg/day, and the oral intake of 60 mg/day of ascorbic acid yields plasma ascorbic acid at 45 to $58\;{\mu}M$ in a healthy adult man. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the maintenance of appropriate level (more than $50\;{\mu}M$) of ascorbic acid in human plasma by appropriate amount (more than the RDA) of ascorbic acid supplementation may be helpful for the prevention and treatment of diseases caused by HSV -1 in an adult man. In addition, this study also suggests that ascorbic acid may be useful for the prophylaxis of fatal HSV-1 infections in neonates and the prevention of HSV-1 reactivation in immunocompromised hosts.

This research explored the feasibility of preparing and utilizing preformed polymeric solution of Fe(III) as coagulants for water treatment. The differentiation and quantification of hydrolytic Fe(III) species in coagulant was done by utilizing spectrophotometric method based on the interaction of Fe(III) with Ferron as a complexing agent. The properties of the synthesized polymeric iron chloride (PICl) showed that the quantity of polymeric Fe(III) produced at r = 1.5 was 20% of the total iron in solution, as showing maximum contents. Coagulation experiments were conducted under the condition of various coagulant doses and pH for each coagulant prepared. From the comparison of the characterization of coagulation for $FeCl_3$ (r = 0.0) and PICl (r = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) coagulants, PICl (r = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) coagulants was found to be more effective than other coagulant for the removal of organic matters. The experimental results for the coagulation tests at various pH ranges showed that the PICl was least affected by the coagulation pH and PICl was very effective for the removal of turbidity and organic materials over wide pH range (pH 4-9) tested.
The main focus of this study was the evaluation of arsenic concentration in the ground water of Lahore at different depth and application of different mitigation techniques for arsenic removal. Twenty four hours of solar oxidation gives 90% of arsenic removal as compared to 8 hr. or 16 hr. Among oxides, calcium oxide gives 96% of As removal as compared to 93% by lanthanum oxide. Arsenic removal efficiency was up to 97% by ferric chloride, whereas 95% by alum. Activated alumina showed 99% removal as compared to 97% and 95% removal with bauxite and charcoal, respectively. Elemental analysis of adsorbents showed that the presence of phosphate and silica can cause a reduction of arsenic removal efficiency by activated alumina, bauxite and charcoal. This study has laid a foundation for further research on arsenic in the city of Lahore and has also provided suitable techniques for arsenic removal.

The dewatering characteristics of the sewage sludge was investigated through the experimental observations and model simulations. The activated sludge and the anaerobically digested sludge were examined for the dewaterability evaluation within the pressure range of $0{\sim}10^6N/m^2$. Modified Buchner funnel test and compression test by the consolidometer were conducted to evaluate average specific resistance, porosity, and moisture percentage of filter cake. Shirato's technique of compression-permeability test was followed for the pressure range lower than about $10^2N/m^2$. The flocculation effects on sludge dewatering was also examined for ferric chloride and polymeric flocculant. The application of hydrated lime which can be used for flue-gas desulfurization showed improved moisture percentage, and was thought to have positive feasibility in combined system of sludge dewatering and incineration. Determined characteristic constants were applied to Tiller's cake filtration model to simulate liquid pressure distribution and porosity distribution in cake. Model simulations showed a sharp drop of the porosity close to the cake-medium interface for the highly compressible material such as the activated sludge and the anaerobically digested sludge.
The purposes of this research were to synthesize amoxicillin-carrying magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by a chemical precipitation of ferric and ferrous chloride salts in the presence of a strong basic solution. PLGA and PLGA-PEG copolymers were prepared by ring opening polymerization of lactide (LA) and glycolide (GA) (mole ratio of LA: GA 3:1) with or without polyethylene glycol (PEG). Amoxicillin loaded magnetic PLGA and PLGA-PEG nanoparticles were prepared by an emulsion-evaporation process (o/w). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photomicrographs showed that the magnetic nanoparticles have the mean diameter within the range of 65-260 nm also they were almost spherical in shape. Magnetic nanoparticles prepared with PLGA showed more efficient entrapment (90%) as compared with PLGA-PEG (48-52%) nanoparticles. In-vitro release of amoxicillin from magnetic PLGA nanoparticles showed that 78% of drug was released over 24 hours. The amount of amoxicillin released from PLGA-PEG s was higher than PLGA.
