  • Daily dietary intake of 11 organophosphorus pesticides by the Korean population was estimated to be $31{\mu}g$ per person ($0.567{\mu}g$/kg body weight/day) from known residue data on raw agricultural products and food factor based on the Korean diet, for the period of 1986-90. Intake ratio of 11 pesticides by food group was 56% from cereals, 23% from vegetables, 14% from fruits and 7% from legumes and other food materials. The ratio of the dietary intake to the ADI was 6.1% in diazinon, 5.8% in fenthion, 3.3% in fenitrothion, 1.5% in EPN and 1.7% average for 11 individual pesticides whereas the cumulative ratio of 11 pesticides was 18.7%. It is, therefore, proposed that a systematic estimate for the dietary intake of organophosphorus pesticides should be undertaken, although the present intake level would not give any adverse effect to the health of the Korean population under the current situation of pesticide usage.

  • The effects of soil environmental conditions on the rate of degradation of fungicide IBP (Iprobenfos, S-benzyl O, O-diisopropyl phosphorothioate) in the soils under flooded condintions were examined in the laboratory. IBP in soil was degraded more slowly under flooded conditions than under upland conditions. The degradation greatly varied among soils, and the degradation rate was negatively correlated with the content of soil organic matter. Degradation of IBP was influenced by the soil temperature and the amount of IBP applied. The rate of degradation in soil was remarkably inhibited by the amendment of rice straw but not affected by the treatment of mixed-fertilizer, and insecticide fenitrothion and herbicide butachlor. The degradation of IBP was assumed to be due to microorganisms, especially aerobic microbes, as no degradation was observed in sterilized soil.

  • This study was carried out to determine residues of 17 pesticides and provide basic information on dietary safety of 35 kinds of Kangweon-do agricultural products. Residual leyels of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides were analyzed by using GLC-ECO and GLC-NPD, respectively. A total of 157 agricultural products of Kangweon-do were analyzed. At least one kind of pesticide residues were detected in 48.4% of the analyzed samples and two or more kinds were found in 15.3%. Residue of Captan was detected in 43 samples of 81 agricultural products which was 53.1%. But residues of Endrin, Captafol, Parathion, Fenitrothion, Fenthion and EPN were not found in the all samples tested. Ranges of the pesticide residue leyels detected were ND-0.142 ppm for organochlorine pesticides, ND-0.075 ppm for organophosphorus pesticides and ND-1.067 ppm for Captan. Results of this monitoring study demonstrated that pesticide residue leyels in Kangweon-do agricultural supply were generally well below regulatory limits.

  • Agricultural soils around springwaters heavily affected by pesticide run-off and around wells considering the regional characteristics were collected at 24 stations in Jeju Island, and the physicochemical properties and adsorption and leaching characteristics of four nonionic pesticides (diazinon, fenitrothion, alachlor, and metalaxyl) were investigated. The values of the major soil factors affecting the adsorption and leaching of pesticides, namely, soil pH($H_2O$), organic matter content, and cation exchange capacity (CEC), were in the range of 4.64 ~ 8.30, 0.9 ~ 13.1% and 12.7 ~ 31.7 meq/100 g, respectively. The Freundlich constant, $K_F$ value, which gives a measure of the adsorption capacity, decreased in the order of fenitrothion > diazinon > alachlor > metalaxyl, which was identical to their lower water solubility. Among the collected soils, the $K_F$ value was very highly correlated with organic matter content ($r^2=0.800{\sim}0.876$) and CEC ($r^2=0.715{\sim}0.825$) and showed a high correlation with clay content ($r^2=0.473{\sim}0.575$) and soil pH($H_2O$) ($r^2=0.401{\sim}0.452$). The leaching of pesticides in the soil column showed a reverse relationhip with their adsorption in soils, i.e., the pesticides leached more quickly for the soils with lower values of organic matter content and CEC among the soils and for the pesticides with higher water solubility.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the toxicities of 38 registered insecticides to the sweetpotato whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). Insecticide activities were evaluated by testing systemic action and residual effect in the laboratory, and control efficacy in the greenhouse. All experiments were tested at the recommended concentration(ppm) of each insecticides. Insect growth regulators (IGRs), only pyriproxyfen showed over 90% of ovicidal effect. The insecticides that showed over 90% of larvicidal activity oil 3rd nymphal instars were abamectin, acetamiprid, chlorpyrifos-methyl, imidacloprid, pyripoxyfen, and acetamiprid+ethofenprox. Insecticides with 100% adulticidal activity were abamectin, acephate, acetamiprid, benfurcarb, bifenthrin, furathiocarb, endosulfan, fenitrothion, imidacloprid, phenthoate, pymetrozine, acetamiprid + ethofenprox, ethofenprox + diazinon, furathiocarb + difluberlzuron, and triazamate+${\alpha}$-cypermethrin. Abamectin, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, pyriproxyfen, and acetamiprid + ethofenpox showed both residual effect and systemic activity. In tile control efficacy test on B. tabaci, 90% control values were obtained at 11th day after treatment of the insecticides including abamectin, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, pyripoxyfen and acetamiprid + ethofenprox. These results indicate that abamectin, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, pyriproxyfen and acetamiprid + ethofenprox can be used for tile control of B. tabaci in field.

  • The citrus fruits were irradiated at different doses (25~200 kGy) to remove pesticides such as diuron, dichlorbenil, trifluralin, dimetoate, chlorothalonil, fenitrothion, bromacil, phenthoate and norflurazon, and the rates of degradation were detected by using gas chromatography electron capture detector (GC-ECD). The limit of detection (LOD) was in the range of 0.007~0.105 ppm. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was in the range of 0.024~0.352 ppm, and the recoveries of 9 pesticides were in the range of 71.5~106.5%. The results demonstrated that the ${\gamma}$-irradiation was effective method to remove pesticides such as diuron, dichlorbenil, trifluralin, dimetoate, chlorothalonil, fenitrothion, and norflurazon. However, the bromacil and phenthoate showed lower removal rates in the rate of 40.5 and 54.8%, respectively, at 200 kGy irradiation.

  • Purpose: Hemoperfusion is an effective modality of extracorporeal elimination of toxins in acutely poisoned patients. We evaluated the effect of hemoperfusion on plasma concentration of toxins in patients exposed to certain pesticides. Methods: Eleven patients who were acutely exposed to pesticides participated in our study. We measured plasma pesticide concentration from the whole blood obtained by arterial and venous sources by gas chromatography. Results: The plasma concentrations of only 3 patients was measured. Methidation clearance by hemoperfusion was 82.2%, fenitrothion was 23%, and endosulfan was 0% Conclusion: Measurement of plasma organophosphate concentration is not a practical application. Our results suggest that hemoperfusion is applicable in patients with pesticide intoxication according to clinical status.

  • An attempt was made to determine the residual distribution of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in the various kinds of Korean tea which were purchased form the maket. The organochlorine pesticides investigated in this study were BHC, DDT and dicofol and the organophoshorus pesticides were diazinon, EPN, fenitrothion and parathion. The pesticide residues were determined by GC-ECD and BHC was detected in all the samples and it's level were ranged from 0.00064 po 0.05995 ppm and it's average was 0.00682 ppm and DDT, dicofol and organophosphorus pesticides were not detected in all samples. The organophophorus pesticides were detected(0.0035∼0.0983 ppm) in raw materials but were not in the manufactured material and it is considered that the largely components of the pesticides is removed by drying and high temperature while the tea was manufactured. The recovery tests of the pesticides gave satisfactory results showing an average yield of 97.6% with organochlorine pesticides and 92.5% with organophoshorus pesticides and the detection limits level were 0.00008 ppm to 0.0010 ppm.

  • Effect of storage temperature, washing, and cooking on postharvest-treated pesticide residues in polished rice was investigated. After being treated with each 500 mg/kg of captan, carbaryl, phenthoate, fenthion, fenitrothion, chlorpyriphos-methyl, pirimiphos-methyl, the polished rice was stored for 8 weeks at 4 and 3$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The penetation rate of carbaryl was the highest as 27.5% and the others, 13 to 18%. The half lives of pesticide residues were estimated as 30 to 230 weeks at 4$^{\circ}C$, but 1 to 12 weeks at 3$0^{\circ}C$. The residues were reduced faster at 3$0^{\circ}C$ than at 4$^{\circ}C$. The half lives of pesticide residues by water washing were estimated as 0.7 to 4.6 trials and the removed with the washing trials. The residues of captan and carbaryl in cooked rice were removed 100 and 98%, respectively, comparing to initial residues concentration in treated rice but those of other 5 pesticides were removed 80%.
