  • In the quasi-3D finite element(FE) anlysis, the overall characteristics of axial flux permanent magnet(AFPM) motor could be composed of each computation region. However, A drawback of quasi-3D FEM is not to consider the end effect on the stack end. To address this problem, an improved quasi-3D FE analysis which considers the end effect of the AFPM motor was proposed. From results the 3D FE analysis, the validity of the proposed method is verified.

  • Thermal brake judder caused by the high friction heat of the brake disk. Hot thermal judder makes serious problems such as to be unstability to drivers or to decrease braking force of automobile. Because thermal judder vibration makes high vibration occurrence and thermal deformation of brake disk. Therefore it Is necessary to reduce or eleminate thermal Judder phenomenon by understanding and investigation. This paper introduces the thermal deformation arising from friction heat generation in braking and proposes the FEM analysis to predict the distribution of temperature and thermal deformation. the results of the FEM analysis show the deformed shape and temperature distribution of the disk brake. The optimization is performed to minimize the thermal judder of ventilated disc brake that is induced by the thermal deformation of the disk brake.

  • An unconstrained tuning fork with a 3-D model has been numerically analyzed by Finite Element Method (FEM) and Boundary Element Method (BEM). The first three natural frequencies were calculated by the FEM modal analysis. Then the change of the modal frequencies was examined with the variation of the tuning fork length and width. Analytical model equations were derived from the numerically relating results of the modal frequency-tuning fork length by approximating minimization. Finally the BEM was used for the sound pressure field calculation from the structural displacement data.

  • This paper compares simplified and finite element method (FEM) models for tower and blade in dynamic coupled analysis of floating wind turbine. A SPAR type wind turbine with catenary mooring lines is considered in numerical analysis. Floating body equation is derived using boundary element method (BEM) and convolution. Equations for mooring line, tower and blade are formulated with theories of catenary, elastic beam and aerodynamic rotating beam, respectively and FEM is applied in the formulation. By combining the equations, coupled solutions are calculated. Tower or blade may be assumed rigid or lumped body for simplicity in modeling. By comparing floating body motions, mooring line tensions and tower stresses with the simple model and original FEM model, the effect of including or neglecting elastic, rotating and aerodynamic behavior of tower and blade is discussed.

  • The backward extrusion process is one of the commonly used metal forming processes. In this paper. a battery case which has the rectangular section, is analyzed using a 3D metal forming package(MSC.Superforge). This pacakge uses the finite volume analysis method. It is shown that the MSC.Superforge package using finite volume method provides result very close to those obtained from a finite element analysis package(MSC.Superform). However, the simulation time using the finite volume method was almost 10 % of the simulation time consumed by the other package using finite element method. Moreover, the finite volume method used in MSC.Superforge can eliminate the remeshing problems that make the simulating a metal forming process with severe deformation, such as the extrusion process, so difficult.

  • The finite element method (FEM) is suitable for the analysis of a complicated region that includes nonlinear materials, whereas the boundary element method (BEM) is naturally effective for analyzing a very large region with linear characteristics. Therefore, considering the advantages in both methods, a novel algorithm for the alternate application of the FEM and BEM to magnetic field problems with the open boundary is presented. This approach avoids the disadvantages of the typical numerical methods with the open boundary problem such as a great number of unknown values for the FEM and non-symmetric matrix for the Hybrid FE-BE method. The solution of the overall problems is obtained by iterative calculations accompanied with the new acceleration method.

  • In this paper, a FEM analysis model was developed to solve the consolidation phenomena of embankment on the soft foundation. The developed FEM model was based on the Biot's consolidation equation which was coupled with one of three stress-strain constitutive relationships. In order to check the validity of the newly developed FEM model, the program input data were used by a test embankment which had been already constructed at Cubzac-les-ponts in France by Magnan et al. The FEM results compared to the experimental and analytical results which were obtained by the Magnan's group at Cubzac-les-ponts. The results compared showed that the consolidation phenomena were well explained by the author's FEM model which results were more accurate than the others. As for the pore water pressure, Christian-Boehmer's method used in this paper was considered preferable to Sandhu-Wilson's used by Magnan.

  • This paper reports the development of an analysis method in a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) using the finite element method (FEM) coupled with the electromagnetic field of the Preisach model, which represents an additional thermal source due to hysteresis loss and a thermal field. This study focused on thermal analysis relative to hysteresis and copper losses in a SynRM.

  • This paper deals with the magnetic equivalent circuit modeling and permanent magnet (PM) performance evaluations of a pole changing memory motor (PCMM). We use a coupled transient finite element method (FEM) and Preisach modeling, which is presented to analyze the magnetic characteristics of the permanent magnets. The focus of this paper is on the evaluation of characteristics such as the magnetizing direction and the pole number of the machine under re- and de-magnetization conditions.
