  • In this study, the vegetative and reproductive morphology and anatomy of two Hawaiian endemic Portulaca species were examined. Specifically, P. molokiniensis and P. sclerocarpa were compared to closely related species in the genus. The comparisons were both qualitative and quantitative, using characteristics of leaves, stems, roots, and fruits. Tissue organizations of vegetative and reproductive parts of the plants were assessed using microtechnique procedures, statistical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The most notable features of these two species were (1) the size and frequency of stomata in P. molokiniensis, and (2) the large number of sclerenchymatous cell layers in the thickest fruit walls of P. sclerocarpa. These findings may imply that stomata development in P. molokiniensis and thick fruit wall development in P. sclerocarpa are evolved features of survival. In particular, the development of thickened walls in indehiscent fruits likely has evolutionary implications of ecological tolerance for better adaptation.

  • This paper presents a optic system and a visual inspection algorithm looking for solder joint defects of J-lead chip which are more integrate and smaller than ones with Gull-wing on PCBs(Printed Circuit Boards). The visual inspection system is composed of three sections : host PC, imaging and driving parts. The host PC part controls the inspection devices and executes the inspection algorithm. The imaging part acquires and processes image data. And the driving part controls XY-table for automatic inspection. In this paper, the most important five features are extracted from input images to categorize four classes of solder joint defects in the case of J-lead chip and utilized to a back-propagation network for classification. Consequently, good accuracy of classification performance and effectiveness of chosen five features are examined by experiment using proposed inspection algorithm.

  • The purpose of this study was to show the abnormal eating habit in pervasive development disorder (PDD) children. The authors studied retrospectively the features of eating habit in 60 PDD children diagnosed by DSM-III-R who made their first visity to Department of Psychiatry, Dongsan Medical Center Keimyung University, from January 1990 to December 1990. The results were as follows;1. The average was 3 years, onset age of illness was before 3 years of all patients, and the ratio between male and female was 5,7:1, and ratio between autistic disorder and PDDNOS was 4:1. 2. Twenty four of 60 PDD children had one or more abnormal eating habit(autistic disorder; 43.8%, PDDNOS; 25%), and more prevalent to male(43.1%,) than female(22.2%). 3. Milk, biscuit, meat and fluids were the favorate foods, the unfavorate foods were vegetable, rice, frutis. 4. Patients of abnormal eating habit were more symptoms of DSM-III-R on 'lack of awareness', 'preoccupation with parts of objects','distress over change'and 'insistence on routine' than others.

  • This paper focuses on the dynamic behaviour of Mirandola City Hall (a XV century Renaissance Palace) that was severely damaged during May 2012 Emilia earthquake in Northern Italy. Experimental investigations have been carried out on this monumental building. Firstly, detailed investigations have been carried out to identify the identification of the geometry of the main constructional parts as well as the mechanical features of the constituting materials of the palace. Then, Ambient Vibration Tests (AVT) have been applied, for the detection of the main dynamic features. Three output-only identification methods have been compared: (i) the Frequency Domain Decomposition, (ii) the Random Decrement (RD) and the (iii) Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA). The modal parameters of the Palace were difficult to be identified due to the severe structural damage; however the two bending modes in the perpendicular directions were identified. The comparison of the three experimental techniques showed a good agreement confirming the reliability of the three identification methods.

  • Nowadays, the power of data analytics in general and visual data analytics, in particular, have been proven to be an important area that would help development in any domain. Many well-known IT services best practices have touched on the importance of data analytics and visualization and what it can offer to information technology service management. Yet, little research exists that summarises what is already there and what can be done to utilise further the power of data analytics and visualization in this domain. This paper is divided into two main parts. First, a number of IT service management tools have been summarised with a focus on the data analytics and visualization features in each of them. Second, interviews with five senior IT managers have been conducted to further understand the usage of these features in their organisations and the barriers to fully benefit from them. It was found that the main barriers include a lack of good understanding of some visualization design principles, poor data quality, and limited application of the technology and shortage in data analytics and visualization expertise.

  • This paper describes an integrated CAD and CAPP system for prismatic parts of injection mold which generates a complete process plan automatically from CAD data of a part without human intervention. This system employs Auto CAD as a CAD model and GS-CAPP as an automatic process planning system for injection mold. The proposed CAD/CAPP system consists of three modules such as CAD data conversion module, manufacturing feature recognition module, and CAD/CAPP interface module. CAD data conversion module transforms design data of AutoCAD into three dimensional part data. Manufacturing feature recognition module extracts specific manufacturing features of a part using feature recognition rule base. Each feature can be recognized by combining geometry, position and size of the feature. CAD/CAPP interface module links manufacturing feature codes and other head data to automatic process planning system. The CAD/CAPP system can improve the efficiency of process planning activities and reduce the time required for process planning. This system can provide a basis for the development of part feature based design by analyzing manufacturing features.

  • The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which brings many benefits to our lives, has resulted in numerous IoT devices in many parts of our living environment. However, to adapt to the rapid changes in the IoT market, numerous IoT devices were widely deployed without implementing security by design at the time of development. As a result, malicious attackers have targeted IoT devices, and IoT devices lacking security features have been compromised by attackers, resulting in many security incidents. In particular, an attacker can take control of an IoT device, such as Mirai Botnet, that has insufficient security features. The IoT device can be used to paralyze numerous websites by performing a DDoS attack against a DNS service provider. Therefore, this study proposes a scheme to minimize security vulnerabilities and threats in IoT devices to improve the security of the IoT service environment.

  • It is difficult to accurately extract features of pedestrian because the pedestrian is photographed at a crosswalk using a camera positioned higher than the pedestrian. In addition, it is more difficult to extract features when a part of the pedestrian's body is covered by an umbrella or parasol or when the pedestrian is holding an object. Representative methods to solve this problem include Object Detection, Instance Segmentation, and Pose Estimation. Among them, this study intends to use the Pose Estimation method. In particular, we intend to increase the recognition rate of pedestrians in crosswalks by maintaining the image resolution through HigherHRNet and applying the foot estimation technique. Finally, we show the superiority of the proposed method by applying and analyzing several data sets covered by body parts to the existing method and the proposed method.

  • Cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases are major health threats in many developed countries. Recently, target tissues derived from human embryonic stem (hES) cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), such as cardiomyocytes (CMs) or neurons, have been actively mobilized for drug screening. Knowledge of drug toxicity and efficacy obtained using stem cell-derived tissues could parallel that obtained from human trials. Furthermore, iPSC disease models could be advantageous in the development of personalized medicine in various parts of disease sectors. To obtain the maximum benefit from iPSCs in disease modeling, researchers are now focusing on aging, maturation, and metabolism to recapitulate the pathological features seen in patients. Compared to pediatric disease modeling, adult-onset disease modeling with iPSCs requires proper maturation for full manifestation of pathological features. Herein, the success of iPSC technology, focusing on patient-specific drug treatment, maturation-based disease modeling, and alternative approaches to compensate for the current limitations of patient iPSC modeling, will be further discussed.
