  • One of the obstacles for a magnetic bearing to be used in the wide range of industrial applications is the failure modes associated with magnetic bearings, which we don't expect for conventional passive bearings. These failure modes include electric power outage, power amplifier faults, position sensor faults, and the malfunction of controllers. Fault-tolerant magnetic bearing systems have been proposed so that the system can operate in spite of some faults in the system. In this paper, we designed a fault-tolerant magnetic bearing system for a turbo-molecular vacuum pump. The system can cope with the actuator/amplifier faults which are the most common faults in a magnetic bearing system. We implemented the existing fault-tolerant algorithms to experimentally prove the adequacy of the algorithms for industrial applications. As it turns out, the system can operate even with three simultaneously failing poles out of eight actuator poles.

  • This paper discusses the utilization of fault-tolerant technology in the industry by analyzing the status of drone failures in the unmanned vehicle industry survey conducted in 2020. Based on the survey results of the domestic unmanned vehicle industry, we identify subsystems with high fault rates and high severity when faults occur. In addition, fault simulations of the identified subsystems are conducted to analyze the effect of the fault on the vehicles. After that, the fault diagnosis and fault compensation methods studied so far are reviewed, and research cases of the methods are examined. Moreover, the ways to apply it to actual fault cases in the unmanned vehicle industry are debated. Furthermore, based on the previous discussion, the fault-tolerant system is presented, and the consideration when designing the fault-tolerant system in the industry are studied.

  • Two scheme are widely used for fault-tolerant systems : one is the duplex system that has a physical redundancy, and the other one is the checkpointing scheme that rolls back to the last checkpoint at a failure. The average execution time and availability are important factors for measuring the performance of the fault-tolerant systems. However, in fault-tolerant real-time systems with a time constraint, meeting the time constrain instead of reducing the average execution time is the most important factor in the performance evaluation. We analyze and compare the performance of two fault-tolerant scheme (the duplex system and the checkpointing scheme) for real-time applications.

  • In this paper, I studied the "Establishment of Fault Tolerant System" as well as the sensor and cylinder that are general components being used in automation equipments. I design a system that when the sensor breaks down on free flow conveyor, it will be converted to virtual sensor system mode by simulation, also I design IPC(Internal Pressure Cylinder), a basis of various applicable fault tolerant system by analyzing the changing of analog data according to the load of operation. With IPC and the increasing ability of developer, the Fault Tolerant System will be widely applied in the increasment of service time of cylinder, grease pouring time expection, fault recognition of cylinder and etc.

  • A fault tolerant control system, in which a digital back-up controller system is added on the existing analog control system, is developed for enhancing reliability of boiler control system in power plant. The digital back-up controller system(DBCS) has a multi-processor structure with capabilities of fault diagnosis, back-up control, self test, and graphic monitoring. Specifically, switching mechanism composed of expandable modules is designed so that back-up controller takes over any faulty control loops and the number of back-up control loops is determined as that of simultaneous faults. A process simulator that simulates the boiler analog control system is developed for safety test and performance evaluation prior to real plant application. DBCS is installed at the Ulsan thermal power plant, and fault tolerant control performance is assured under the faults that some controller modules are pulled out.

  • This paper describes a fault tolerant control in distributed PLC(Programmable Logic Controller) system to ensure reliability of controllers which have some faults simultaneously. First, the behavior of PLC is modeled as discrete expressions using Galois field. Then, we design the control laws for additional spare controllers to generate parity code with two dimensions. Finally, the algorithm for estimating normal output instead of abnormal output from the controllers with fault is suggested. Comparing to the traditional duplication method, the suggested method can reduce the number of spare controllers significantly to ensure control reliability. This method will be applied to an automatic system in order to increase reliability. Also, it can improve cost performance of the system.

  • In this paper, fault tolerant mechanisms are presented for a servo manipulator system designed to operate in a hot cell. A hot cell is a sealed and shielded room to handle radioactive materials, and it is dangerous for people to work in the hot cell. So, remote operations are necessary to handle the radioactive materials in the hot cell. KAERI has developed a servo manipulator system to perform such remote operations. However, since electric components such as servo motors are weakened with radiation, fault tolerant mechanisms have to be considered. For fault tolerance of the servo manipulator system, hardware and software redundancy has been considered. In the case of hardware, radioactive resistant electric components such as cables and connectors have been adopted and motors driving a transport have been duplicated. In case of software, a reconfiguration algorithm accommodating one motor's failure has been developed. The algorithm uses redundant axes to recover the end effector's motion in spite of one motor's failure.

  • This paper deals with a design of fault tolerant state feedback controllers for continuous time nonlinear time delay systems with actuator failures. The goal is to find an asymptotically stabilizing controller such that the closed loop system achieves the prescribed $H_{\infty}$ performance objective in the actuator fault cases. Based on a sum of squares (SOS) approach, a design method for $H_{\infty}$ fault tolerant controller is presented. In order to demonstrate our design method, a numerical example is provided.
