The area to be studied is the place where the main line rail way will be constructed in accordance with the scheduled construction project of Yeongju dam, and is a fold and mylonite zone over several km that is formed by ductile-shearing effect. The ductile shear zone, which has been transformed by faulting for long geological time, shows a complicated geological structure. Due to the recrystallization of mineral caused by transformation in deep underground (>8km), a mylonite zone with lamellar structure has properties distinguished from other fault zones formed by transformation near earth surface <2km). To see the properties of mylonite, this study analyzed the transformation rate of sample rocks and the shape of constriction structure accompanied with transformation. While the transformation of fault zone shows a round oblate, the mylonite zone shows a prolate form. Transformation rate in fault zone was measured to be less than 1.2 compared to the state before transformation while the measured rate in mylonite zone was 2.5 at most. Setting the surface of discontinuity as the base, the unconfined compressive strength of slickenside can be categorized in sedimentary rocks, and a change of strength was observed after water soaking over certain time. Taking into account that the weathering resistance of the rock based on mineral and chemical organization is relatively higher, its engineering properties seems to result from the shattered crack structure by crushing effect. When undertaking tunnel construction in mylonite zone, there should be a special care for the expansion of shattered cracks or the fall of strength by influx of ground water.
The purpose of this work is to gain a better understanding of the interrelationships between geological structures and slope failure in sedimentary rocks. In the studied slopes, construction-related slope failure could only be observed on the south-dipping slopes. This indicates that slope stability may be dependent on the angular relationships between the dip direction of bedding and the orientation of the slope. Slope failure continued, post-construction, around large fault zones in the studied outcrop; these fault damage zones are, however, not easily recognized in the field. Here we suggest a new method that uses accumulated fracture density to precisely identify fault damage zones. Multiple-faced slopes are now increasingly being exposed during large-scale construction projects in South Korea. This multiple-faced slope analysis indicates that the stability of a slope should be evaluated by identifying domains, through the analysis of possible slopes and their angular relationships with bedding and other discontinuities, prior to construction. Therefore, careful consideration of geological structures such as bedding and other discontinuities, and their angular relationships during the design of cuttings through sedimentary rocks, will increase the efficiency of construction and enable the safe construction of more stable slopes that will retain their stability after construction.
Ground magnetic surveys were conducted at four areas where the Yangsan fault, the most prominent lineament in the Kyeongsang basin, appears to be passed through. For data processing, IGRF correction, upward continuation and reduction-to-the-pole were performed. The automatic inversion by using a matrix computation method, which takes the depth to bottom layer of the horizontal two layer structure as the model parameter, has been attempted to delineate the subsurface structure. Upward continuation of the surface magnetic map to the same level of the aeromagnetic survey (KIER, 1989) resulted in very similiar patterns to those of aeromagnetic data. Subsurface modeling of eight profile data show that the strike and dip of the Yangsan fault in study areas are $N6^{\circ}-15^{\circ}E$, and near vertical to somewhat eastward, repectively, despite of the local lithological contrast of each study area. It seems that the magnetic effect of faulting in the study area 1, which locates in the most northern part of the survey areas, is disturbed by that of igneous intrusion. At study area 2, the possibility of volcanic or igneous intrusion, which is 200-300 meters wide along the fault plane was presented. At study area 3, unlike other study areas, distinct fracture zone of 500-700 meters in width was revealed along the surface fault line. The andesitic rocks of the study area 4 have very high susceptibilities and the fault line on surface of this area was shifted about 500 meter eastward, as compared with the inferred fault line by the previous study.
To understand behavior of fault cores in the field of geotechnical and geological engineering, we present an investigation of the physical properties (breccia and clay contents, unit weight, porosity, and water content) and friction characteristics (internal friction angle and cohesion) of fault cores, in granitic, sedimentary, and volcanic rocks in South Korea. The breccia contents in the fault cores are positively correlated with unit weight and negatively correlated with clay content, porosity, and water content. The inter-quartile ranges of internal friction angles and cohesion calculated from direct shear tests are 16.7-38.1° and 2.5-25.3 kPa, respectively. The influence of physical properties on the friction characteristics of the fault cores was analyzed and showed that in all three rock types the internal friction angles are positively correlated with breccia content and unit weight, and negatively correlated with clay content, porosity, and water content. In contrast, the cohesions of the fault cores are negatively correlated with breccia content and unit weight, and positively correlated with clay content, porosity, and water content.
On November 15, 2017, a Mw 5.4 Pohang Earthquake occurred at about 4 km hypocenter in the Heunghae area, and caused great damage to Pohang city, Korea. In the Heunghae area, which is the central part of the Pohang Basin, the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup and the Late Cretaceous to Early Paleogene Bulguksa igneous rocks as basement rocks and the Neogene Yeonil Group as the fillings of the Pohang Basin, are distributed. In this paper, structural and geological researches on the crustal deformations (folds, faults, joints) in the Pohang Basin and the coseismic ground deformations (sand volcanoes, ground cracks, pup-up structures) of Pohang Earthquake were carried out, and the deformation history of the Pohang Basin and characteristics of the coseismic ground deformations were considered. The crustal deformations were formed through at least five deformation stages before the Quaternary faulting: forming stages of the normal-slip (Gokgang fault) faults which strike (N)NE and dip at high angles, and the high-angle joints of E-W trend regionally recognized in Yeonil Group and the faults (sub)parallel to them, and the conjugate normal-slip faults (Heunghae fault and Hyeongsan fault) which strike E-W and dip at middle or low angles and the accompanying E-W folds, and the conjugate strike-slip faults dipped at high angles in which the (N)NW and E-W (NE) striking fault sets show the (reverse) sinistral and dextral strike-slips, respectively, and the conjugate reverse-slip faults in which the NNE and NNW striking fault sets dip at middle angles and the accompanying N-S folds. Sand volcanoes often exhibit linear arrangements (sub)parallel to ground cracks in the coseismic ground deformations. The N-S or (N)NE trending pop-up structures and ground cracks and E-W or (W)NW trending ground were formed by the reverse-slip movement of the earthquake source fault and the accompanying buckling folding of its hanging wall due to the maximum horizontal stress of the Pohang Earthquake source. These structural activities occurred extensively in the Heunghae area, which is at the hanging wall of the earthquake source fault, and caused enormous property damages here.

In order to outline the kinematics and movement history of a new Quaternary fault, Jingwan Fault in Dangjin, West Korea, we analyzed the geometry of the fault zone composed of a few gouge zones, and made ESR dating for fault gouge materials. The $N55^{\circ}E$ striking Jingwan Fault is a normal fault and exhibits a gradual change in dip (gentle in the lower part, steep in the upper part), indicating a listric fault. As for the fault gouge zone, its thickness varies and reaches 2~3 cm in the lower part or between basement rocks, and 20~30 cm in the middle-upper part or between the basement and Quaternary deposit. It is observed in the latter case that more than three gouge zones develop with different colors, and branch out and re-merge, or they are partly superimposed, indicating different movement episodes. The cumulative displacement is estimated to be about 10 m using the geological cross-sections, from which it is inferred that the total length of fault may be about 2.5 km on the basis of the empirical relation between cumulative displacement and fault length. Therefore, a more study would be needed to verify the entire fault length. The results of ESR dating for three gouge samples at different spots along the fault yields ages of $651{\pm}47$, $649{\pm}96$, and $436{\pm}66ka$, indicating at least two movement episodes. Slickenlines observed on the fault planes indicate a pure dip slip (normal faulting), which suggests that the ENE-WSW trending Jingwan Fault was presumably moved under a NNW-SSE extensional environment.

This paper is focused on mineral compositions, microstructures and distributional characters of remained grains in the fault rocks collected from a fault developed in Yongdang-ri, Yangbuk-myeon, Gyeongju City, Korea, using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscope, laser grain size analysis and fractal dimension analysis methods. The exposed fault core zone is about 1.5 meter thick. On the average, the breccia zone is 1.2 meter and the gouge zone is 20cm thick, respectively. XRD results show that the breccia zone consists predominantly of rock-forming minerals including quartz and feldspar, but the gouge zone consists of abundant clay minerals such as chlorite, illite and kaolinite. Mineral vein, pyrite and altered minerals commonly observed in the fault rock support evidence of fault activity associated with hydrothermal alteration. Fractal dimensions based on box counting, image analysis and laser particle analysis suggest that mineral grains in the fault rock underwent fracturing process as well as abrasion that gave rise to diminution of grains during the fault activity. Fractal dimensions(D-values) calculated by three methods gradually increase from the breccia zone to the gouge zone which has commonly high D-values. There are no noticeable changes in D-values in the gouge zone with trend being constant. It means that the bulk-crushing process of mineral grains in the breccia zone was predominant, whereas abrasion of mineral grains in the gouge zone took place by continuous fault activity. It means that the bulk-crushing process of mineral grains in the breccia zone was predominant, whereas abrasion of mineral grains in the gouge zone took place by continuous fault activity. Mineral compositions in the fault zone and peculiar trends in grain distribution indicate that multiple fault activity had a considerable influence on the evolution of fault zones, together with hydrothermal alteration. Meanwhile, fractal dimension values(D) in the fault rock should be used with caution because there is possibility that different values are unexpectedly obtained depending on the measurement methods available even in the same sample.
Natural or native abiotic molecular hydrogen (H2) is a major component in natural gas, however yet its importance in the global energy sector's usage as clean and renewable energy is underestimated. Here we review the occurrence and geological settings of native hydrogen to demonstrate the much widesprease H2 occurrence in nature by comparison with previous estimations. Three main types of source rocks have been identified: (1) ultramafic rocks; (2) cratons comprising iron (Fe2+)-rich rocks; and (3) uranium-rich rocks. The rocks are closely associated with Precambrian crystalline basement and serpentinized ultramafic rocks from ophiolite and peridotite either at mid-ocean ridges or within continental margin(Zgonnik, 2020). Inorganic geological processes producing H2 in the source rocks include (a) the reduction of water during the oxidation of Fe2+ in minerals (e.g., olivine), (b) water splitting due to radioactive decay, (c) degassing of magma at low pressure, and (d) the reaction of water with surface radicals during mechanical breaking (e.g., fault) of silicate rocks. Native hydrogen are found as a free gas (51%), fluid inclusions in various rock types (29%), and dissolved gas in underground water (20%) (Zgonnik, 2020). Although research on H2 has not yet been carried out in Korea, the potential H2 reservoirs in the Gyeongsang Basin are highly probable based on geological and geochemical characteristics including occurrence of ultramafic rocks, inter-bedded basaltic layers and iron-copper deposits within thick sedimentary basin and igneous activities at an active continental margin during the Permian-Paleogene. The native hydrogen is expected to be clean and renewable energy source in the near future. Therefore it is clear that the origin and exploration of the native hydrogen, not yet been revealed by an integrated studies of rock-fluid interaction studies, are a field of special interest, regardless of the presence of economic native hydrogen reservoirs in Korea.
Gravimetric and magnetic surveys were conducted in order to reveal near-surface structures such as basements, faults, and fracture zones in an area near Angang, where the Yangsan fault is believed to pass through. Along two lines approximately perpendicular to the strike of the major fault, gravity and magnetic data were measured at 67 stations with a 15 m interval and at 296 stations with a 3 m interval, respectively. Average depth to the magnetic basement is estimated using the spectral analysis method to be 8.5 and 10.0 m along lines located to the east and the west of the Hyeongsan river, respectively. Average value of reduced gravity on the east line is higher than that on the west by the amount of 1.71 mGal, which indicates that the basement rocks are more severely fractured in the western part. Forward gravity modeling along the east line indicates that a fracture zone extends westward from a fault located 210 m west of the eastern end. Density and depth to the bottom of the fracture zone are estimated to be 2.44 g/cm3 and 70 m, respectively. The gravity model study also indicates presence of a small graben, 190 m wide and 3.5 m deep on an average, on the basement surface. The earth surface above the graben is approximately 44 cm lower than the nearby surface. This indicates that the graben might have been formed by recent fault movements.
The dynamic evolution of the Chugaryeong fault valley is studied by paleomagnetic works on 163 samples at 16 sites from Late Cretaceous and Quaternary volcanic rocks in the valley. Conglomerate test and stepwised thermal/alternating field demagnetization indicate that all the characteristic directions are of primary origin. Paleomagnetic pole ponsition(216.8$^{\circ}$E/7l .6$^{\circ}$N; dp=7.1$^{\circ}$, dm=10.0$^{\circ}$) for the upper par of the Jijangbong Volcanic Complex Is indistinguishable from the coeval retference pole position from the Gyeongsang Basin, which further substanciates the reliability of the Paleomagnetic data. This indicates the study area has not undergone any tectonic rotation since Late Cretaceous by uy significant reactivation of the Chugaryeong fault valley. The Quaternary pole position (134.2$^{\circ}$E/86.5$^{\circ}$N; $A_{95}$=7.1 $^{\circ}$) from the Jeongog Basalt reflects the present geocentric axial dipole field for the area, supporting the above conclusion. Unlike the upper part, paleomasnelic directions of the lower part of the Jijangbong Volcanic Complex show random distrinution between sites. We interpret that the early stage of the volcanic activity was created by sinistral strike slip motion of the Chugaryeong fault during early Late Cretaceous. The creation and evolution of the Chugaryeong fault valley emphasize the significance of the kinematic FR (folding ruler) model in east Asia.
