The Short Circuit Analysis of a Simplified Magnetic Shielding Type High-Tc Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (단순화된 자기차폐형 고온초전도한류기 단락 특성 해석)

  • Nowadays the high-Tc Superconducting Fault current Limiter (SFCL) is one of the superconducting devices which are very closed to commercialization. The most popular model of High-Tc SFCL is a magnetic shielding type. A superconductor of magnetic shielding type SFCL can be stable in the superconducting state, because there is no contact between the superconductor and the normal conductor. But this model needs large place to set up and in a fault condition, mechanical vibrations may happen to damage the superconductor or total device. In this paper, to solve these problems, the simplified model of magnetic shielding type SFCL was introduced.

Case Study of Intermittent Engine Hesitation Fault Diagnosis By CKPS Fault (LPI차량에서 CKPS불량으로 주행 중 간헐적인 엔진부조 현상의 고장진단)

  • The purpose of this study is to carry out the task of engine hesitation which occurred intermittently in driving due to the defective CKPS of LPI vehicles. As the result of the wrong data from the equipment of D-logger, the signal error of CKPS caused the engine hesitation. We performed a study in the followings to analyze and investigate the cause effectively. First, we have investigated the control wiring harness and connector pin contact defect inspection. Second, we have inspected the defection of CKPS separately. From this study, it was found that the engine hesitation were caused by the bad durability and we have showed how to diagnosis the fault of the engine hesitation intermittently while driving. Therefore, it is determined that we have to improve the durability of the CKPS through a strict quality control and to increase the reliability.

  • We have studied a weird phenomenon on the High Voltage Impulse Track Circuit (HVITC). The biggest problem is that can not recognize the fault states, despite the fact the rail is broken. This study has shown that current HVITC systems can be operated even an ill-contact state of impedance bond lead wire. This study was carried out using various methods, such as measurements using an oscilloscope with voltage and current probes, simulations using PSCAD/EMTDC software tool, and analysis of measured data. Especially, we have simulated the fault state through bypass circuits using PSCAD/EMTDC software tool. We made a model of track circuit and simulated various types of fault states.

Electrical Resistivity Surveys in Yangsan Fault Area near Kyongju (경주 부근 양산단층 지역에서의 전기비저항 탐사)

  • Electrical resistivity surveys were conducted in the areas between Buji-ri and Seoak-dong, and between Nawon-ri and Yangdong-ri, Kyongju in order to investigate the geoelectric structure of the nothren part of the Yangsan Fault. In the area between Buji-ri and Seoak-dong south of Kyongju, the fracture zone east of the inferred fault develops more deeply, without significant north-south variation in depth, than west. In the area between Nawon-ri and Yangdong-ri north of Kyongju, the fault zone seems to be developed along the Hyungsan-river, and the resistivity structure west of the river is more affected by the fracture zone than east. Interpreted section of dipole-dipole survey conducted in Homyung-ri shows vertical contact of the Yangsan Fault. It appears that the boundary between the northern and central segment of the Yangsan Fault is located in the north of study areas since there is no significant variation in electrical resistivity structure near Kyongju.

  • Low voltage circuit breakers are widely used in power distribution systems to interrupt fault current rapidly and to assure the reliability of the power supply. This paper is focused on understanding the interrupting capability, more specifically of the contacts and the arc runner, based on the shape of the contact system in the current molded case circuit breaker (hereafter MCCB). Moreover, in order to improve the interrupting capability of the circuit breaker, the estimation and analysis of the interrupting capability, based on the 3-D magnetic flux analysis, were developed. Furthermore, this paper also presents results of the estimation and analysis of the interrupting capability when applied to different model breakers. In addition, this paper analyzes the efficiency of the interrupting tests by forming false current paths consisting of a three-division cascade arc runner in the contact system. With regards to the interrupting test, there is a need to assure that the optimum design required to analyze the electromagnetic forces of the contact system generated by the current and flux density be present. Based on the results of this study, this paper presents both computational analysis and test results for the newly developed MCCB 460V/225A/50㎄ contact system.

  • EMB is considered as the next generation braking mechanism because it has simple structure and is environment friendly. However, as other brake mechanisms, EMB should be operated reliably for any operating conditions. EMB should be designed with fail-safe and fault-tolerant control concepts which require robust fault detection algorithms for various possible faults. In the design of fault detection algorithms, it is very difficult to construct faulty conditions in real EMB and thus, simulations are often used to emulate the faulty conditions. In this paper, a simulation tool is developed using the commercial software to emulate gear faults in the EMB mechanism. A backlash compensation algorithm is introduced based on contact point detection because screw backlash causes a delay in clamping force response time.

Quantitative NDE Thermography for Fault Diagnosis of Ball Bearings with Micro-Foreign Substances (미세 이물질이 혼입된 볼베어링의 고장 진단을 위한 정량화 열화상에 관한 비파괴평가 연구)

  • In this study, a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) mothod is proposed for ball bearings contaminated with micro foreign substances, which were inserted into a ball bearing to create a defective specimen. The non-contact quantitative infrared thermographic technique was applied for NDE condition monitoring. Passive thermographic experiments were conducted to perform early fault diagnosis, for bearings operated at optimized torque status under a dynamic load condition. The temperature profiles for normal and defective specimens were quantitatively compared, and the thermographic data analyzed. Based on the NDE results, the temperature characteristics and abnormal fault detection of the ball bearing were quantitatively analyzed according to the rise in temperature.

  • The major causes of electrical fire are classified to short circuit fault, overload fault, electric leakage and electric contact failure. The principal factor of the fire is electric arc or spark accompanied with such electric faults. Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELB) and Molded_case Circuit Breaker (MCCB), that is, Residual Current Protective Devices (RCDs) used on low voltage distribution lines cut off earth leakage and overload, but the RCD can not cut off electric arc or spark to be a major factor of electrical fire. As the RCDs which are applied in low voltage distribution panel are prescribed to rated breaking time about 30[ms] (KS C 4613), the RCDs can't perceive to the periodic electric arc or spark of more short wavelength level. To improve such problems, this paper studies on an arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) using the distorted voltage wave in electric arc faults. The proposed voltage sensing type AFCI is an electrical fire prevention apparatus of new conception that operates a circuit breaker with sensing the instantaneous voltage drop of line voltage at electrical faults occurrence. The proposed AFCI is composed of control circuit topology using some semiconductor switching devices. Some experimental tests of the proposed AFCI confirm practicality and the validity of the analytical results.

  • An ideal circuit breaker should supply electric power to loads without losses in a conduction state and completely isolate the load from the power source by providing insulation strength in a break state. Fault current is relatively easy to break in an Alternating Current (AC) circuit breaker because the AC current becomes zero at every half cycle. However, fault current in DC circuit breaker (DCCB) should be reduced by generating a high arc voltage at the breaker contact point. Large fire may occur if the DCCB does not take sufficient arc voltage and allows the continuous flow of the arc fault current with high temperature. A semiconductor circuit breaker with a power electronic device has many advantages. These advantages include quick breaking time, lack of arc generation, and lower noise than mechanical circuit breakers. However, a large load capacity cannot be applied because of large conduction loss. An extinguishing technology of DCCB with polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) device is proposed and evaluated through experiments in this study to take advantage of low conduction loss of mechanical circuit breaker and arcless breaking characteristic of semiconductor devices.
