  • Small to large earthquakes have been reported in Gyeongju and its vicinity in southeast Korea during historical period as well as instrumental observation period. We identified and located more than 300 earthquakes that occurred between January 2010 and December 2014 in a $20km{\times}30km$ area, but were unreported because of their small magnitudes. We used the Joint Hypocenter Determination (JHD) method to minimize the influence of the differences between the actual earth structure and 1-D velocity model for earthquake locations. The potential relationship between the previously reported Quaternary faults and the earthquake hypocenters was investigated. Many micro-earthquakes were found to be located in the southern segment of the Yeonil Tectonic Line, the Seokup fault, and the Waup basin boundary faults.

  • Vulnerability assesses the loss of major performance functions of GCV (Ground Combat Vehicles) when it is hit by enemy's shell. To decide the loss of major functions, it is determined what effects are on the performance of GCV when some components of GCV are failed. M&S (Modeling and Simulation) technology is used to vulnerability assessment. The hydro-pneumatic suspension is used as a sample part. The procedures of vulnerability assessment of the hydro-pneumatic suspension are shown as follows: 1) The components of the suspension are defined, and shot lines are generated evenly around the part. 2) The penetrated components are checked by using the penetration equation. 3) The function model of the suspension is designed by using IDEF0. 4) When the failure of the critical components of the suspension happens, its effect on the function of the suspension can be estimated using DMEA (Damage Mode and Effects Analysis). 5) The diagram of FTA (Fault Tree Analysis) is designed by exploiting DMEA. 6) The damage probability of the suspension is calculated by using FTA and vulnerable area method. In this paper, SLAP (Shot Line Analysis Program) which was developed based on COVART methodology. SLAP calculates the damage probability and visualizes the vulnerable areas of the suspension.

  • Energy efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is very appealing research area due to serious constrains on resources like storage, processing, and communication power of the sensor nodes. Due to limited capabilities of sensing nodes, such networks are composed of a large number of nodes. The higher number of nodes increases the overall performance in data collection from environment and transmission of packets among nodes. In such networks the nodes sense data and ultimately forward the information to a Base Station (BS). The main issues in WSNs revolve around energy consumption and delay in relaying of data. A lot of research work has been published in this area of achieving energy efficiency in the network. Various techniques have been proposed to divide such networks; like grid division of network, group based division, clustering, making logical layers of network, variable size clusters or groups and so on. In this paper a new technique of group based WSNs is proposed by using some features from recent published protocols i.e. "Energy-Efficient Multi-level and Distance Aware Clustering (EEMDC)" and "Energy-Efficient Multi-level and Distance Aware Clustering (EEUC)". The proposed work is not only energy-efficient but also minimizes the delay in relaying of data from the sensor nodes to BS. Simulation results show, that it outperforms LEACH protocol by 38%, EEMDC by 10% and EEUC by 13%.

  • Tunnel collapse often occurs during deep underground tunneling (> 40 m depth) in South Korea. Natural cavities as well as water supply pipes, sewer pipes, electric power cables, artificial cavities created by subway construction are complexly distributed in the artificial ground in the shallow depths of the urban area. For deep tunnel excavation, it is necessary to understand the properties of the ground which is characterized by porous elements and various geological structures, and their influence on the stability of the ground. This study analyzed geological factors for risk assessment in deep excavation in South Korea based on domestic and overseas case study. As a result, a total of 7 categories and 38 factors were derived. Factors with high weights were fault and fault clay, differential stress, rock type, groundwater and mud inrush, uniaxial compressive strength, cross-sectional area of tunnel, overburden thickness, karst and valley terrain, fold, limestone alternation, fluctuation of groundwater table, tunnel depth, dyke, RQD, joint characteristics, anisotropy, rockburst and so forth.

  • This paper presents a basic ECU(Electronic Control Unit) hardware development procedure for the functional safety of in-vehicle network systems. We consider complete hardware redundancy as a safety mechanism for in-vehicle communication network under the assumption of the wired network failure such as disconnection of a CAN bus. An ESC (Electronic Stability Control) system is selected as an item and the required ASIL(Automotive Safety Integrity Level) for this item is assigned by performing the HARA(Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment). The basic hardware architecture of the ESC system is designed with a microcontroller, passive components, and communication transceivers. The required ASIL for ESC system is shown to be satisfied with the designed safety mechanism by calculation of hardware architecture metrics such as the SPFM(Single Point Fault Metric) and the LFM(Latent Fault Metric).

  • This paper presents a voltage sag assessment program. The program provides various functions for stochastic assessment of voltage sags such as short-circuit analysis, the determination of the area of vulnerability and the calculation of expected sag frequency(ESF). Effective data visualization functions based on computer graphics and animation were also implemented in the developed program. In this paper, the concept of voltage sag assessment and the assessment method considering generator scheduling and time-varying fault rates are presented. The influence of generator scheduling and time-varying fault rates on voltage sag prediction is also described by performing case studies using the developed program.

  • The widely used motors in HEV(Hybrid Electric Vehicles) are IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) which has no rotor heat, higher efficiency and advantageous in volume and weight comparing with other motors. For vector control of IPMSM, position information of rotor is required but Resolver is mainly used as the detecting sensor. However, the use of position sensors will reduce the system reliability of hybrid electric vehicles. In this paper, a way to control the motor by sensorless was proposed at the event of sensor failure. We also implemented IPMSM sensorless operation by the expanded EMF(Electro Motive Force) voltage way and harmonic voltage which is applying in the low speed area. And we proposed how to change with sensorless control by detecting the position sensors failure and verified it through experiments.

  • Some reverse fault lines pass through the alluvial fans and west hill slope of Bulguksa mountains including Mt. Toham in the directions of N-S and NW-SE. The study area is known as relatively unstable, because of active faults. Assuming the record of earthquake in the Samguksagi, the architects in the construction of the Bulguksa temple should have recognized the possibility of breakdown from the earthquakes and the need for an unique structure against at that time. Against earthquakes, Greavee technique, a stonework construction technique following woothe one and use of Chushouok (Dongtleouok or Chumchaouok) were applied for the construction of Bulguksa temple. By designing the foundation stone with hole, a structure is prevented from motiff Ction that pillarsakdcede from a foundation stone in spite of horizontal load of earthquake while woot construction isaktrong frame at earthquake. The Bulguksa-temple isausually evaluated to be a beautiful architecture from the appeaultces like the weight balltced structure with unique decoration. ampressive architectures are beautiful in balance and harmony coming from the important and specific rolls in its own way by each part of whole structure. This beauty comes from the science.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm RICP(Redundancy Identification using Critical-pair Paths) to identify untestable faults in combinational logic circuits. In a combinational logic circuit, untestable faults occurred by redundancy of circuits. The redundancy of a circuit can be detected by analyzing areas of fanout stem and reconvergent gates. The untestable faults are identified by analyzing stem area using Critical-Pair path which is an extended concept of critical path. It is showed that RICP is better than FIRE(Fault Independent REdundancy identification) algorithm in efficiency. The performance of both algorithms was compared using ISCAS85 bench mark testing circuits.
