  • This paper proposes a new FDI(Fault Detection and Isolation) method, which is called EPSA(Extended Parity Space Approach). This method is particularly suitable for fault detection and isolation of the system with one faulty sensor or two faulty sensors. In the system with two faulty sensors, the fault detection and isolation probability may be decreased when two faults are occurred between the sensors related to the large fault direction angle. Nonetheless, the previously suggested FDI methods to treat the two-faults problem do not consider the effect of the large fault direction angle. In order to solve this problem, this paper analyzes the effect of the large fault direction angle and proposes how to increase the fault detection and isolation probability. For the increase the detection probability, this paper additionally considers the fault type that is not detected because of the cancellation of the fault biases by the large fault direction angle. Also for the increase the isolation probability, this paper suggests the additional isolation procedure in case of two-faults. EPSA helps that the user can know the exact fault situation. The proposed FDI method is verified through Monte Carlo simulation.

  • When fault currents contain decaying DC offset, the peak value of the fault current in the first cycle of the fault period is higher than the fault current during the steady-state period. To reduce the asymmetric fault current, this paper proposes an operation scheme using the series connection of two hybrid type Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCLs) : an auxiliary SFCL and a main SFCL. The proposed method calculates the fault angle by comparing the zero-crossing time with fault detection time. According to the fault angle calculated, an auxiliary SFCL operates to reduce an asymmetric fault current during half a cycle after fault occurrence. After this process, the fault current is limited by a main SFCL. To confirm the usefulness of the proposed method, case studies using Electro-Magnetic Transients Program (EMTP)/Alternative Transient Program (ATP) Draw are perfomed.

  • When the accident occurred in power distribution system, it needs to control efficiently the fault current according to the fault angle and location. The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) can quickly limit when the short circuit accidents occurred and be made the resistance after the fault current. The flux-lock type SFCL has a single triggering element, detects and limits the fault current at the same time regardless of the size of the fault current. However, it has a disadvantage that broken the superconductor element. If the flux-lock type SFCL has separated structure of the triggering element and the limiting element, when large fault current occurs, it can reduce the burden of power and control fault current to adjust impedance. In this paper, this system is composed by triggering element and limiting element to analyze operation of limiting current. When the fault current occurs, we analyzed the limiting and operating current characteristics of the two triggering current level, and the compensation characteristics of bus-voltage sag according to the fault angle and location.

  • The conventional fault location algorithms based on the travelling waves have an inherent problem. In cases of the close-up faults occurring near the relaying point and of the faults having zero degree inception angle of voltage signals, the conventional algorithms can not estimate an accurate fault distance. It is because the shapes of travelling waves are near sinusoidal in those cases. A new method solving this problem is presented in this paper. An FIR(Finite Impulse response) filter which makes high frequency components prominent and makes the power frequency component and dc-offset attenuated is used. With this method, the cross-correlation peak is to be very clear when a close-up fault or a fault having near zero-degree inception angle occurs. The cross-correlation peaks can be clearly distinguished and accurate fault location is practically possible consequently. A series of simulation studies using EMTP(Electromagnetic Transients Program) show that the proposed algorithm can calculate an accurate fault distance having maximum 2% or less error.

  • This paper presents a Daubechies wavelet-based fault detection method for fault identification in transmission lines. After the Daubechies wavelet coefficients are calculated, the proposed algorithm has been implemented difference equation using C language. We have modeled a 154kV transmission line using the ATPDraw software and have acquired test data. In order to evaluate effects of DC offset, simulations carried out while varying an inception angle of the voltage $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$. For performance evaluation, fault distance was varied. As we can see from the off-line simulation, the proposed algorithm shows rapid and accurate fault detection. Also we can see the proposed algorithm is not affected by the fault inception angle change.

  • In this paper, we propose a fault diagnosis method based on Park's Vector Approach using the Euler's theorem. If we interpreted it as Euler's theorem, it is possible to easily find the phase angle difference between the healthy condition and the fault condition. And, we analyzed the variation of the phase angle and performed the diagnostic method of the induction motor using feature vectors that were obtained by using a Fourier transform. The analysis of time and speed variation of the motor was performed and, as a result, we could find more soft variations than rough variations. In particular, the analysis of the distortion through each phase shows that two-turn and four-turn shorted motors are linearly separable. In this experiment, we know that the maximum breakdown threshold value for determining steady-state fault detection is 49.0788. Simulation and experimental results show the more detectable than conventional method.

  • A new trigonometrical method for calculating total slip (T) of faulting is presented. The parameters for the calculations are used rake of fault striation, strike and dip of fault and of index planar structure such as bedding plane. The faults are groupped into three types. The direction of plunging of fault striation is out of a range ${\pm}90^{\circ}$ to the bedding dip direction in $360^{\circ}$ system, which is groupped into the type I. Meanwhile, the case of the direction lies in the above range can be separated into two different types, type II and type III, according to relative largeness of the angles rake of fault striation and i (see text). The type II has smaller rake than angle i and the type III has larger rake than angle i. Here I propose a few equations for calculating not only total slip (T) but strike slip (L) or dip slip (S) of the faulting. The equations are adapted selectively to the types of fault mentioned before. The limitation of the method is that the equations do not fit to polyphase faulting.

  • Tsunamis triggered by undersea earthquakes have the characteristic of longer wavelengths and can propagate a very long distance. Although the occurrence frequency of tsunami is low, it can cause casualties and properties. Historically, tsunamis that occurred on the western coast of Japan attacked the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula and damaged the property and the loss of human life in 1983 and 1993. By tsunami in 1983 especially, 2 people were killed, and more than 200 casualties occurred. In addition, it caused 2 million dollars in property damage at Imwon Port. In 2011, The eastern cities of Japan: Iwate, Miyagi, Ibaraki, and Fukushima were damaged by a tsunami that occurred near onshore along the Pacific ocean and caused more than 300 billion dollars in property damage, and 20,000 casualties occurred. Moreover, those provoked nuclear power plant meltdown at Fukushima. In this study, it was carried out a relationship between maximum tsunami heights and fault parameters of earthquake: strike angle, dip angle, and slip angle at Imwon port. Those fault parameters are known that it does not relate to the magnitude of earthquake directly. Virtual tsunamis, which could be triggered by probable undersea earthquakes in the future, were investigated and mutual information based on probability and information theory was introduced to figure out the relationship between maximum tsunami height and fault parameters. Fault parameters were evaluated according to the strong relationship with maximum tsunami heights finally.

  • The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with a peak current limiting function according to the initial fault current with the different amplitudes was suggested. The proposed SFCL, which consists of two limiting components, causes only the first superconducting element among two limiting components to be quenched in case that the initial fault current with the lower peak amplitude happens. On the other hand, the initial fault current with the higher peak amplitude makes both the superconducting elements of two limiting components to be quenched, which contributes to the peak current limiting function of the SFCL. To confirm the fault current limiting operation of the proposed SFCL, the short-circuit tests of the SFCL according to the fault angle were carried out and its effective fault current limiting operations could be discussed.

  • Fault-tolerant gait generation of a hexapod robot with crab walking is proposed. The considered fault is a locked joint failure, which prevents a joint of a leg from moving and makes it locked in a known position. Due to the reduced workspace of a failed leg, fault-tolerant crab walking has a limitation in the range of heading direction. In this paper, an accessible range of the crab angle is derived for a given configuration of the failed leg and, based on the principles of fault-tolerant gait planning, periodic crab gaits are proposed in which a hexapod robot realizes crab walking after a locked joint failure, having a reasonable stride length and stability margin. The proposed crab walking is then applied to path planning on uneven terrain with positive obstacles. i.e., protruded obstacles which legged robots cannot cross over but have to take a roundabout route to avoid. The robot trajectory should be generated such that the crab angle does not exceed the restricted range caused by a locked joint failure.
