  • African swine fever (ASF) is a fatal viral disease in pigs, with a short incubation period and causing immediate death. Few studies exist on the Asian epidemic ASF virus (ASFV) challenge in older pigs, including growing and fattening pigs and sows. We aimed to investigate clinical outcomes, pathomorphological lesions, and viral distribution in organs of 3-month-old growing pigs that were inoculated with the ASFV isolated in Vietnam. The clinical outcomes were recorded daily, and the dead or euthanized pigs immediately underwent necropsy. Viral loads were determined in 10 major organs using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The average incubation period in growing pigs was more delayed (5.2±0.9 dpi) than that in weaned pigs, and the clinical signs were milder in growing pigs than in weaned pigs. The digestive and respiratory clinical signs in growing pigs showed at the end period of life, but these were observed at an early stage of infection in weaned pigs. The pathomorphological features were severe and nonspecific with hemorrhagic lesions in various organs. The viral loads in organs from growing pigs were higher than those from piglets, and the number of viral copies was related to gross lesions in the tonsil and intestine. In the absence of vaccines against ASF, early clinical detection is important for preventing the spread of the virus. Our findings elucidated that the clinical signs and gross lesions in growing pigs differed from those in weaned pigs, which provide valuable information for diagnosis of pigs with suspected ASF infection.

  • This paper deals with the distribution of Yersinia spp. isolated from the feces or the cecal contents of 1,755 pigs, 558 cows, 428 pigs slaughtered, 271 dogs slaughtered and 91 deer during the period of March 1985 to February 1986. Isolated Yersinia spp. were examined for serotype, biotype and antibiotic susceptibility of Y. enterocolitica. The results were as follows; One hundred and fourty-three stains of Yersinia spp. were isolated from 141(4.5%) out of 3,103 animals examined and their isolates were identified as Y. enterocolitica(138 strains), Y. kristensenii (3 strains), Y. intermedia(1 strain) and Y. pseudotuberculosis(1 strain). Yersinia spp. were isolated from 122(7.0%) of 1,755 pigs in piggeries, 15(3.5%) of 428 pigs slaughtered and 4(1.5%) of 271 dogs slaughtered, but no Yersinia spp. were isolated from cows and deer. The isolation rate of Yersinia spp. in pigs ranged from 5.9~8.0% in piggeries, it was higher in summer and autumn and highest in fattening pigs groups(10.4%), especially. One hundred and thirty-eight Y. enterocolitica isolates belonged to serotype 0 : 3(95 strains), 0 : 8(13 strains), 0 : 5(7 strains), 0 : 9(6 strains), 0 : 1, 2(1 strain) and untypable(16 strains), among them strains of serotype 0 : 3 biotype 3B(91 strains) were predominant. Antibiotic susceptibility test of 138 isolates of Yersinia spp. was performed by the agar dilution method, using 8 antibiotics as follows: ampicillin(Am), chloramphenicol, kanamycin, nalidixic acid(Na), rifampicin(Rf), streptomycin, sulfadimethoxine(Su) and tetracycline. All the strains tested were susceptible to Rf and Na, but resistant to Su, and 136 strains(98.6%) were also resistant to Am.

  • The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of Toyocerin, a probiotic containing Bacillus toyoi spores, on the health status and productivity of pigs, during nursery, growing and finishing phases. On a commercial farrow-to-finish farm in Greece, 3 experimental groups were formed, each of 72 weaned piglets. The pigs of the first group (T1 group; negative controls) received normal feed with no antimicrobials or probiotics, the pigs of the second group (T2 group) received the same type of feed but supplemented with 1.0${\times}$10$^9$, 0.5${\times}$10$^9$ and 0.2${\times}$10$^9$ spores per kg of feed at weaning, growing and finishing stage, respectively, and the pigs of the third group (T3 group) were fed with Toyocerin at the dose of 1.0${\times}$10$^9$ spores per kg of feed during the entire fattening period (weaning, growing and finishing stages). The results have shown that, compared to the controls, Toyocerin treated pigs had reduced incidence of postweaning diarrhoea (p<0.05). Enterotoxigenic strains of Escherichia coli were detected in faecal samples of 0% to 25% of pigs of the treated groups, but in 33.5% to 50% of pigs of the non-treated group (p<0.05). Over the negative controls, a significant improvement of weight gain (4.5% and 8.3% for T2 and T3 groups, respectively), and of feed conversion ratio (6.6% and 13.0% for T2 and T3 groups, respectively) was observed. The 76.5% of the carcasses of the T3 group was classified in the top three categories of the EUROP scale (S, E and U), whilst the respective figures were 47.8% for T2 group and only 10.5% for T1 group (p<0.05).

  • Objectives of this study was to investigate effects of supplemental chromium (Cr) as CrP in growing pigs treated with pST. Seventy two Landrace pigs weighing average 60 kg were alloted to the three treatments during the 52-d experimental period: control (corn-soybean basal diet); pST treatment (4 mg/head/day); pST + CrP treatment (4 mg and 200 ppb/head/day). Upon termination of feeding trial weighing average 105 kg, thirty-six pigs randomly selected from each treatment were slaughtered to compare carcass traits. For the study of lipid metabolism, eighteen pigs were alloted to the same treatments. Adipose tissue samples from eighteen pigs were collected to investigate lipid metabolism. All treated samples with pST and pST + CrP showed improvements in daily weight gain, regardless of sex. Feed/gain ratio significantly improved in pigs treated with pST and pST + CrP. Dressing percentages were higher in pigs treated with pST and pST + Crp. Carcass grades were significantly higher in pigs treated with pST and pST + CrP. Lipolysis of adipose tissue measured in vitro was significantly increased in pigs treated with pST, lipogenesis in vitro showed opposite tendency. Even though the current data does not show synergistic effects on the above parameters when CrP and pST were supplied at the same time, but CrP supplementation tended to improve growth performance and carcass traits of pigs treated with pST.

  • Ten 18.5-month old Holstein steers were allocated into two diet groups of five and fed either concentrates as control group or potato by-products based silage (PBS) as experimental group for six months to investigate the effect of PBS on growth performance, carcass characteristics and fatty acid composition of carcass fats. The PBS diet consisted, in a DM basis, of 74.5% PBS, 16% hay, and 9.5% soybean milk residue (SMR). The control diet consisted, in a DM basis, of 82.5% concentrates and 17.5% hay. There were no significant differences in the overall average daily gain (ADG), dry matter intake (DMI), feed efficiency, yield score and meat quality score of dressed carcass between the two diet groups. There were no statistical differences in DM, crude protein (CP), and ether extract (EE) of beef and melting point of all adipose tissues from steers fed both diets. The PBS-fed steers tended to have lower Warner Bratzler shear (WBS) values than in the concentrate-fed steers (13.0 vs. 17.7 lb, p<0.1). At both sampling times 3 and 6 months of feeding period, PBS-fed steers had higher proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially linoleic (C18:2) acids in subcutaneous fat than in control group (p<0.05). PBS-fed steers had significantly higher proportions of PUFA, especially C18:2 fatty acids than in concentrate-fed steers in carcass fats (p<0.05). In conclusion, feeding PBS to fattening steers has shown to have the same potential as concentrate feeding in terms of effect on the growth performance, feed efficiency, and carcass characteristics. Interestingly, PBS also seems preferable to concentrates because it increased the proportion of C18:2 fatty acid composition of carcass fats which is valuable for beef consumers.

  • Stomachs from 3,354 fattening pigs were examined at slaughter during the period from September 1980 to August 1981. Pigs of both sexes and $Landrace{\times}Hampshire$ crossbreds were included in the present studies, and they weighed about 60-120kg. Gross pathologic alterations of the stomach were classified as normal, epitnelial change, erosion, ulcer and scar formation. Representative tissue sections were taken from the stomach lesions at random and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. Cut sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and examined histopathologically. The results obtained in the present studies were as follows. 1. In the seasonal prevalence of gastric ulceration, severe ulceration with erosion was shown during the Autumn and Winter, whereas mild ulceration was mainly shown during the Spring and Summer. 2. Of the 3,354 stomachs of the pigs, 20.8% were found to be normal. Of the rest, 40% had epithelial changes, followed by erosion (24.7%), ulcer (13.6%) and scar formation (0.9%), respectively. 3. In the prevalence of ulcers in the different regions of the stomach, the fundic region had the highest rate (61.6%) of ulceration, followed by cardiac (21.7%), esophageal (15.0%) and pyloric region (1.7%). 4. The principal gross changes were severe epithelial changes with keratotic proliferation in the esophageal region, and in the fundic region severe folding of the stomach wall was covered with bloody mucous exudates. 5. Main histopathological changes were inflammatory cell infiltrations in most cases, hemorrhages in acute ulcers and prominent proliferation of granulation tissues in chronic ulcers.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the possibility for utilization and the effectiveness of citrus byproducts on the nutritional composition and sensory score of Jejudo native pig meat. The groups are consisting of the Jejudo native pig loin without citrus byproduct ($JNP-T_0$) and the Jejudo native pig loin fed with 8% and 15% citrus byproduct during growing and fattening period($JNP-T_1$). The contents of moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash, calorie, cholesterol content Mg, P, K, Na, vitamin $B_1\;and\;B_2$, total amino acid, and total free amino acid content were not significantly different between $JNP-T_0$ and $JNP-T_1$(p>0.05). It was found that palmitic acid($25.301{\sim}27.403%$) was the highest one among saturated fatty acid while oleic acid($42.234{\sim}43.061%$) was the highest among unsaturated fatty acid in both groups. In case of sensory score, the color and aroma of raw meat, and the flavor preference of boiled meat of $JNP-T_0$ were higher than those of $JNP-T_1$(p<0.05). But the taste, texture, juiciness and palatability of boiled meat were not influenced by feeding of citrus byproduct.

  • The purpose of this research was to study the effects of the feeding of dietary citrus byproducts on the physicochemical properties and palatability of Hanwoo rump (HR). The samples for experimental samples consisted of the HR not fed without citrus byproducts pulp (CBP-0) and the HR rump fed with citrus byproducts pulp during the fattening period (CBP-1). The control (CBP-0) HR rump was fed by general practical feeding (roughages and concentrates were fed separately), while the CBP-1 was fed in the same manners as CBP-0 until 17 months but with citrus byproducts then fed fer the next 10 months. There were no significant differences in the $L^*$ (tightness), $a^*$ (redness) and $b^*$ (yellowness) of the HR between the CBP-0 and CBP-1 fed groups. There were no significant differences in the pH, VBN content and EDA between the samples, but the TBARS value of the CBP-1 fed group was lower than that of the CBP-0 fed group (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in the water holding capacity, freezing loss, thawing loss, boiling and roasting logs between the CBP-0 and CBP-1 fed groups. There were no significant differences in the hardness, cohesiveness, chewiness and shear force between the samples, but the springiness of the CBP-1 fed group was higher than that of the CBP-0 fed group (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in the sensory scores for the roasted beef between the CBP-0 and CBP-1 fed groups. There were no significant differences in the taste, flavor, juiciness and palatability of roasted beef the between samples, but the tenderness of the CBP-1 fed group was superior to that of the CBP-0 fed group.

  • Compared to other North African countries, Tunisia has reached a significant level of fish consumption. The only relevant historical dimension of aquaculture in Tunisia are traditional lagoon management (80,000 ha of lagoon and coastal lakes) and culture of shellfish. Semi-intensive and intensive cultures are relatively new concepts in Tunisia and only recently also the public sector is involved. The Tunisian fishing industry has expanded over the last 20 years and annual catches at present are more than four times those registered in mid-fifties. Production of the year 2007 reached 105 thousand tons against 111 thousand tons during the same period of 2006 thus recording a fall of 5%. Unfavorable weather conditions mainly during the last quarter year had the effect to reduce the number of days out at sea. Exports reached 24.3 thousand tons for one value 240.5 MD against respectively 22.2 thousand tons and 234.1 thus recording MD at the end of the past year a rise of 9% in volume and from 3% in value. Commercial value such as shellfish - consequence of one regression of the production - with in parallel raises blue fish exports. The imports were stabilized in volume of 39.1 thousand tons and increased from 6% in value with respectively 67.4 MD in 2007 against 63.7 MD at the end of 2006. The importation in larger quantities of intended fish to the fattening of tuna in floating cages explains partly this rise. Nevertheless, the pay of balance import/export of produced fishing remains positive with a surplus of 173.1 MD against 170.4 MD in 2006.
