Prediction of Growth Behavior of Initially Semicircular Surface Cracks under Axial Loading (축하중을 받는 초기 반원 표면피로균열의 진전거동 예측)

  • A relatively simple prediction method is proposed for initially semicircular surface crack growth under axial loading. The method takes into account the difference in surface crack closure behavior at the depth point and at the surface intersection point, and also the relationship of crack closure for surface crack and through-thickness crack. The prediction method provides conservative estimation for fatigue life within factor of two, and the predicted crack geometry variations agree well with the observed results. As a result, the prediction method proposed here is considered to be useful for engineering application.

  • Spot welding has been used in the sheet metal joining processes because of its high productivity and convenience. In this study, predicting methods of fatigue life of spot welded joint have been studied fatigue life of conch-peel spot welded joint was influenced by tail effect. Fatigue life was estimated by stress index parameter considering multiaxial stresses and tail effect. Fatigue tests were conducted with the coach-peel specimens using SPCC.

  • The catenary wires are damaged by periodic running of train as well as repeated stress. The wires are also degraded by atmosphere corrosion at fields. Corrosion of wires increased surface roughness and deteriorated mechanical properties by providing fatigue crack initiation sited resulting in a bad effect on service life of the wires. Fatigue test of catenary wires performed to estimate service lifetime. Also, simulation to analyze stress on catenary wires was conducted through modelling the finite elements for dynamic behaviors of wires. Fatigue life of catenary wires was estimated with fatigue and simulation tests.

  • Crack closure and growth behavior of physically short fatigue cracks under random loading are investigated by performing narrow- and wide-band random loading tests for various stress ratios. The importance of the crack closure phenomenon is examined by predicting the growth lives of short cracks using obtained crack opening behavior. Artificially prepared two-dimensional, short through-thickness cracks are used. The crack opening load of short cracks is much lower under random loading than under constant-amplitude loading corresponding to the largest load cycle in a random load history. This result indicates that the largest load cycle in a random load history has an effect to enhance crack opening of short cracks. Most of the life prediction ratios are within the factor of 2 scatter band except several data at very short crack sizes, indicating that crack growth predictions based on the measured crack opening data are excellent. From the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that crack closure is the primary factor governing fatigue crack growth of short cracks under random loading as well as under constant-amplitude loading.

Factors Predicting Depression in Hemodialysis Patients (혈액투석 환자의 우울 예측 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was done to provide fundamental data for developing a depression prediction model by discovering main factors that affect depression in patients who do maintenance hemodialysis. Method: The subjects were 191 patients doing maintenance hemodialysis selected from outpatient dialysis clinics at 9 major general hospitals, The Instrument tools utilized in this study were adapted from depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, stress, adaptation, symptoms, daily activities, and role limitation and thoroughly modified to verify reliability and validity. The collected data was analyzed with a SPSS-PC 11.0 Window Statistics Program for real numbers, percentage, average, standard deviation, and multiple regression. Results: The correlation factor for depression was (M=2.54) fatigue(M=3.12), sleep disturbance (M=2.82), stress(M=3.04), adaptation(M=2.53), daily activities(M=2.24), symptoms(M=2.37), and role limitation(M=2.24). The strongest factor that affected depression was explained by symptoms of the patients who performed hemodialysis. The analysis of the factors that affected depression revealed a $58.4\%$ prediction in symptoms, stress, role limitation, and adaptation. Conclusion: It has been confirmed that the regression equation model(Depression=7.351 + .266$^{\ast}$symptoms + .260$^{\ast}$stress -.l89$^{\ast}$adaptation + .057$^{\ast}$fatigue) of this research may serve as a prediction factor for depression in Hemodialysis Patients.

  • Rolling element bearing fatigue life can be significantly reduced by debris particles in lubricants. The debris particles cause raceway surface dents that initiate early fatigue damage. Optical interferometry has been found to be the best method for characterizing bearing raceway debris dent damage. This technique is used to determine the important features, sizes and density of dents. The resulting data file is then used to determine bearing fatigue life. Tests show that bearings manufactured by different processes and material types are affected differently by debris damage and that these differences must be considered by life prediction methodologies. Bearings made by a specific enhanced process can significantly resist the deleterious effects of debris damage and outperform bearings made by other means.

  • High temperature low cycle fatigue shows that cycle-dependent crack growth owing to cyclic plastic deformation occurred simultaneosly with time-dependent crack growth owing to intergranular deformation. Consequently, to estimate crack growth rate uniquely, many to investigators have proposed various kinds of parameters and theories but these could not produce satisfactory results. Therefore the goal of this study is focused on prediction of crack growth rate using predominant damage rule, linear cumulative damage rule and transitional parameter ${\Delta}J_c/{\Delta}J_f$. On the basis of these sinusoidal loading waveform at 600$^{\circ}C$ and 700$^{\circ}C$.

  • Because of a sudden growth of the research of fatigue failure, recent machines or structures have been designed by damage tolerance design in many fields. Consequently, it is the most primary factor to clarity the specific character of fatique failure in the design of machines or structures considering reliability. A statistical analysis is required to analyze the outcome of an experiment or a life estimate by reason of that fatigue failure contains lots of random elements. Reliability analysis which has tukenn the place of the existing analyses in the consideration of the uncertainty of a material, is a very efficient way. Even reliability analysis, however, is not a perfect way to analyses the uncertainties of all the materials. This thesis would refer to a newly conceived data analysis that the coefficient of a system could cause the ambiguity of the relationship of an input and output.

  • This work has been investigated the ralationship between single surface crack length and crack depth have influence on the fatigue life. The simulation based on experimental results of 2.25 Cr-1Mo steel at various crack configuration ratios has enabled successful prediction of fatigue life at room temperature. The effect of crack depth should be considered for predicting fatigue crack growth rates as well as that of surface crack length. It is also shwn that the crack growth mechanisms are in good agreement with expreimental data according to the interaction of crack length and crack depth.

  • A simulation program concerned with multi-surface fatigue cracks which initiated at the semi-circular surface notches has been developed to predict their growth and coalescence behaviors at the elevated temperature. Three kinds of coalescence models such as SPC(surface point connection), ASME and BSI(British Standards Institution) conditions were applied, and the results of the simulation were compared with those of the experiment. This simulation is able to enhance the reliance and integrity of structures especially under the elevated temperature which have lots of difficulties in experiments and applications. This shows that the simulation result has utility for fatigue life prediction. Even though all the specimens were the same shape, the error rate was increased in accordance with the applied stress to the specimen. Among the material constants C and m in the narrow band, the results applied upper values of the band to the simulation has shown quite small error compared with the experiment results.
