The effect of surface damage on fatigue properties of catenary wires were investigated to estimate their service lift. As surface defects of the wires caused by surface corrosion increase, surface roughness gets worse, and as roughness increases, it is easy for moisture coming from rain and dew to be condensed around uneven parts of the surface. The condensed moisture causes a locally severe corrosion which leads to damage of the wires. Corrosion of catenaty wires can make their actual lifetime shorter than that originally designed. The amount of decrease was more prominent as environmental conditions became more corrosive. They are also vibrated with some amplitude everytime pantographs touch contact line. The frequent cyclic load on the wire may result in a fatigue fracture. Surface damage by corrosion can make formation of crack initiation at fatigue. In the present study, the fatigue life of the used wire was measured 35 to 50% compared with that of new one in average.
This paper deals with the lifetime prediction of Aircraft Flaperon Joint made of AISI 4130 steel. Reviews are performed on the published damage models at first. And three different damage models are used for predicting the fatigue life of the structure subjected to variable amplitude fatigue loading. These models require no increase in complexity of use, nor do they require additional material property or mission loading information to achieve the improved accuracy. Finally a comparison among the fatigue results is performed. It is observed that the Miner's rule could predict longer life than other cumulative damage models which take into account loads below the endurance limit.

In this paper, the normalized variable V=(log N-B)(log ${\Delta}{\sigma}-C$-C), as derived from the probabilistic S-N field of Castillo and Canteli, is taken as a reference for calculation of damage accumulation and probability of failure using the Miner number in scenarios of variable amplitude loading. Alternative damage measures, such as the classical Miner and logarithmic Miner, are also considered for comparison between theoretical lifetime prediction and experimental data. The suitability of this approach is confirmed for it provides safe lifetime prediction when applied to fatigue data obtained for riveted joints made of a puddle iron original from the Fao bridge, as well as for data from experimental programs published elsewhere carried out for different materials (aluminium and concrete specimens) under distinct variable loading histories.
The composite blades of offshore wind turbines accumulate structural damage such as fatigue cracking due to harsh operation environments during their service time, leading to premature structural failures. This paper investigates various fatigue crack models for reproducing crack development in composite blades and proposes a stochastic approach to predict fatigue crack evolution and to analyse failure probability for the composite blades. Three typical fatigue models for the propagation of fatigue cracks, i.e., Miner model, Paris model and Reifsnider model, are discussed to reproduce the fatigue crack evolution in composite blades subjected to cyclical loadings. The lifetime probability of fatigue failure of the composite blades is estimated by stochastic deterioration modelling such as gamma process. Based on time-dependent reliability analysis and lifecycle cost analysis, an optimised maintenance policy is determined to make the optimal decision for the composite blades during the service time. A numerical example is employed to investigate the effectiveness of predicting fatigue crack growth, estimating the probability of fatigue failure and evaluating an optimal maintenance policy. The results from the numerical study show that the stochastic gamma process together with the proper fatigue models can provide a useful tool for remaining useful life predictions and optimum maintenance strategies of the composite blades of offshore wind turbines.
The lifetime of power train components can be improved dramatically by finding crack initiation points with suitable software tools and optimization of the critical areas. With increasing capacities of computers the prediction of the lifetime for components by numerical methods gets more and more important. This paper discusses some applications of the outstanding fatigue simulation program FEMFAT supporting the assessment of uniaxially and multiaxially loaded components (as well as welding seams and spot joints). The theory applied in FEMFAT differs in some aspects from classical approaches like the nominal stress concept or the local one and can be characterized by the term "influence parameter method". The specimen S/N-curve is locally modified by different influence parameters as stress-gradient to take into account notch effects, mean-stress influence which is quantified by means of a Haigh-diagram, surface roughness and treatments, temperature, technological size, etc. It is possible to consider plastic deformations resulting in mean-stress rearrangements. The dynamic loading of power train components is very often multiaxial, e.g. the stress state at each time is not proportional to one single stress state. Hence, the directions of the principal axes vary with time. We will present the way how such complex load situations can be handled with FEMFAT by the examples of a crank case and a gear box.

This paper proposes an approach for predicting the fatigue life of a propeller shaft of a forklift truck by an accelerated life test method. The accelerated life test method adopted in this study is the calibrated accelerated life test, which is highly effective in the prediction of the lifetime and enables significant reduction of the test time as well as a quantification of reliability in the case of small sample sizes. First, the fatigue test was performed under two high stress levels, and then, it was performed by setting low stress levels in consideration of the available test time and extrapolation. Major reliability parameters such as the lifetime, accelerated power index, and shape parameter were obtained experimentally, and the experimentally predicted lifetime of the propeller shaft was verified through comparison with results of an analysis of load spectrum data under actual operating conditions.
Recently, due to the increasing overloaded heavy vehicles and traffic volumes fatigue failures of steel highway bridges frequently occur. Therefore, it is important to decide rational fatigue design procedure which can reflect lifetime cumulative fatigue damage reasonably. In this study, cumulative fatigue damages are simulated for various bridge systems and traffic conditions. The AASHTO LRFD fatigue design procedure is reviewed and the current fatigue design loading format, in which a single representative truck is loaded regardless of bridge width, is found to yield inconsistent safety level. Improved loading format with rational design load level for fatigue design is suggested.
In general, structural integrity of rolling stock structures should last more than 25 years. During the lifetime corrosive degradation occurs. For structural design and diagnosis, quantitative relationship between corrosive degradation and variation of mechanical properties such as tensile strength and fatigue strength is needed. In this study, first of all we established the atmospheric corrosion test procedure. At regular intervals using specimens of SM490A and SS400 on the atmospheric corrosion test bed, we carried out tensile and fatigue tests. The fatigue strength decreases as the atmospheric corrosion period increases. And we studied the effect of post-weld heat treatment on the tensile and fatigue behaviour.

A brake disk in railway vehicle is safety part. Requirements not only in performance but also in comfort, serviceability and working lifetime are high and rising. In this study, we carried out fatigue test and thermal stress analysis. To determine a pressure distribution, contact pressure analysis precede thermal stress analysis. Especially, characteristics of the brake disk were analyzed in considering intial velocity, and thickness of a frictional plate. Form the comparing the results of experiment and FEM analysis, fatigue characteristic and fatigue life assessment ok a brake disk of railway vehicle were performed.

The loss of strength in an aircraft structure as a result of cyclic stress over a period of life time is an important phenomenon for aircraft analysis. Load/stress spectrum can be constructed from the occurrence frequency based on the load/stress histories during a service lifetime. In this paper, three types of fatigue spectrum was compared. The rainflow counting method was applied to concentrate the stress spectrum obtained from the flight loads recorder(FLDR). A fatigue analysis for different stress spectrum was performed by using LUSAS computer application.
