  • Failure mechanisms of weldments under fatigue loads are interpreted that multiple collinear surface cracks initiating along weld toe propagate under the mutual interaction and coalescence of adjacent two cracks. To estimate fatigue crack propagation life for these weldments, the stress intensity factors of the multiple surface cracks have to be calculated which are influenced strongly by the geometrical complexity of weld toes and attachments. The Ak-factors derived by a parametric study can be introduced for the effective calculation of the stress intensity factors taking into account the geometrical complexity. The fatigue life was estimated by using the Ak-factors and the method considering the propagation mechanisms of the multiple surface cracks. The estimated values showed a good agreement with the measured fatigue life experimentally.

  • The computer program for the accelerated life testing technique of a machine part under the service conditions is developed under the GUI environment so that the user can easily obtain the results by selecting the program module. Also, the theoretical backgrounds for the computer program and the procedures of the accelerated testing method are introduced by testing the specimens made of the stainless steel 316L under the high temperature and random loading. The reliability of the program is discussed by the experimental results of the fatigue life, age degradation and accelerated testing conditions.

  • Fatigue life of welded joints is governed by the propagation of multiple collinear surface cracks distributed randomly along weld toe. These cracks propagate under the mechanisms of mutual interaction and coalescence of the adjacent two cracks. To estimate the fatigue life, its influences on the above two mechanisms should be taken into account, which appear through the stress intensity factors disturbed mutually. However, it is difficult to calculate the stress intensity factors of the multiple surface cracks located in vicinity of weld toe due to its geometrical complexity. They are calculated normally by using the Μk-factors, but such Mk-factors are very rare in literature. In this study, the Μ$textsc{k}$-factors were obtained from a parametric study on crack length and depth, for which a finite element method is used. A fatigue test for a cruciform welded Joint was conducted and the fatigue life of the tested specimen was estimated using the present method with the informations obtained from the test, such as the number, size, and locations of the cracks. The estimated and measured fatigue life showed a good agreement.

  • The fatigue phenomenon, which is induced by stress accumulation due to the repeated loading of vehicles in the long term, is one of the main factors of the span of life of a steel bridge. In this paper, the effects of traffic properties on the fatigue life of ordinary short- and medium-span steel plate girder bridges that are exposed to relatively large dynamic effects are investigated. From the analysis, it was known that the fatigue life of the bridge becomes shorter with increasing traffic volume and number of large vehicles, and is affected by the weights of the vehicles. Based on the analysis results, a new parameter that can represent the traffic property that affects the fatigue life of the subject bridge is suggested, and the validity of the parameter is confirmed.

  • The large-scale structures have the possibility that there are defects such as cracks due to stress concentration caused by geometric discontinuities in the structure. In this respect, the assessment of fatigue life and the development of structural health monitoring(SHM) are very important. Fatigue design of structure is typically accomplished either using a set of stress cycle (S-N) data obtained from fatigue tests or using the fracture mechanics approach. The stress intensity factor(SIF) is required for the estimation of fatigue crack propagation life from the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) perspective. In this study, Macro Fiber Composie(MFC) sensor for the measurement of SIF of two dimensional cracks is used. The SIF based on the piezoelectric constitutive law and fracture mechanics are calculated. The measured values of the SIF are later used for the prediction of the crack propagation life. In this study, the measured value of the SIF and the fatigue life are compared with the theoretical results.

  • The fatigue test of the fillet weldments was executed with different beveling angles and porosities. The beveling angles of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $55^{\circ}$ were compared with fatigue lives. After the fillet weldment failure, the porosities which found at the fractured surface were observed to account the effect on fatigue life. Finite element analysis was performed to correlate the fatigue strength and the sizes and the locations of porosities. The stress-strain field was severely affected by the length of notch and the sizes and locations of porosities. Based on the quantitative analysis of porosity effect, the total volume of porosities was a key factor for fatigue strength of the fillet weldment.

  • The purpose of this study is fatigue damage assessment for large sized casting parts (hub and mainframe) of the 3MW offshore wind turbine by computer simulation. Hub and mainframe durability assessment is necessary because wind turbine have to guarantee for 20 years. Fatigue life evaluation must be considered all of fatigue load conditions as the components are wind load transmission path. Palmgren-Miner linear damage accumulation hypothesis is applied for fatigue life estimation with stress-life approach. S-N curve for the spheroid graphite cast iron EN-GJS-400-18-LT is derived according to durability guidelines. Reduction factors were applied for survival probability, surface roughness, material quality and partial safety factor according to Germanischer Lloyd rules. To calculate fatigue damage, stress tensors, extracted from the unity load calculation from ANSYS is multiplied with time track of fatigue loads extracted from GH bladed. Damage accumulation is performed with all of fatigue load conditions at each finite element nodes. In this study maximum nodal damage value is under 1.0. casted parts are safe. • In this study, the prediction of the fatigue life as well as the extimation of the characteristics of fatigue cumulative damage on GFRP under random loading were performed. The constant amplitude tests and the ramdom loading test were carried on notched GFRP specimens with a circular hole. Random waves were generated with a micro-computer and had wide band spectra. Since it is useful that the prediction of fatigue life ot the given load sequences is based on S-N curves under constant amplitude loading, the estimation of equivalent stress is done on every random waves. The equivalent stress wasat first estimated by Miner's rule and then by the proposed model which was based on Hashin-Rotem's comulative damage theory regarding nonlinear fatigue cumulative damage behavior. The fatigue lives were predicted from each equivalent stress evaluated. And each predicted fatigue llife was compared with experimental results. The number of cycles of random loads were counted by mean-cross counting method. The reuslts showed that the fatigue life predicted by proposed model was correlated well with the experimental results in comparison with Miner's model.

  • Die life is generally estimated taking failure life and wear amount into consideration. In this study, the forging die life was investigated considering both of these two factors. The fatigue life prediction for the die was performed using the stress-life method, i.e. Goodman's and Gerber's equations. The Archard's wear model was used in the wear life simulation. These die life prediction techniques were applied to the die used in the forging process of the socket ball joint of a transportation system. A rigid-plastic finite element analysis for the die forging process of the socket ball was carried out and also the elastic stress analysis for the die set was performed in order to get basic data for the die fatigue life prediction. The wear volume of the die was measured using a 3-dimensional measurement apparatus. The simulation results were relatively in good agreement with the experimental measurements.
