Due to the uncertainties related to the flaw assessment parameters, such as flaw size, fracture toughness, loading spectrum and so on, the probability concept is preferred over deterministic one in flaw assessment. In this study, efforts have been made to develop the reliability based flaw assessment procedure which combines the flaw assessment procedure of BS7910 and first-and second-order reliability methods (FORM/SORM). Both crack length and depth of semi-elliptical surface crack at weld toe were handled as random variable whose probability distribution was defined as Gaussian with certain means and standard deviations. Then the limit state functions from static rupture and fatigue perspective were estimated using FORM and SORM in joint probability space of crack depth and length. The validity of predicted limit state functions were checked by comparing it with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. It was confirmed that the developed methodology worked perfectly in predicting the limit state functions without time-consuming Monte Carlo simulation.
A theoretical model for the evaluation of small surface fatigue crack initiated from a pit-type surface flaw is presented. The low frequency scattering model is developed based on the reciprocity principle for the elastic wave scattering. The effect of the flaw on the surface wave reflection from the crack is taken into account approximately by means of the stress intensity factor of cracks on a through thickness hole. The reflection coefficient of surface wave is derived for the prediction of small surface crack depth. Calculated results for pits with different sizes are illustrated.
Aging aircraft structures are inevitably exposed to environment for a long time facing many potential problems, including corrosion and wide spread fatigue damage, which in turn cause the degradation of flight safety. In this study, the environmental surface damages on aging aircraft structures induced during service were quantitatively analyzed. Additionally, S-N fatigue tests were performed with center hole specimens extracted from aging aircraft structures. From the results of quantitative analyses of the surface damages and fatigue tests, it is concluded that corrosion pits initiated during service reduce the fatigue life significantly. Finally, using the fracture mechanics and the EIFS (equivalent initial flaw size) concepts, the remaining fatigue life was predicted based on actual fatigue test results.
Composite rotor blades for rotorcraft have an intrinsic vulnerability to foreign object impact from its inherent structural characteristics of insufficient strength in the thickness direction, which may easily lead to internal structure damage. Therefore, defects and strength reducing effects caused by foreign object impact should be considered in fatigue evaluation of composite blades. For this purpose, the flaw tolerant safe-life and fail-safe concepts were adopted in fatigue evaluation since 1980s, and recently those concepts have been replaced by the damage tolerance concept. In this paper, the relevant standards for fatigue evaluation are analyzed focusing on fiber reinforced composite rotor blades used in rotorcraft. In addition, fatigue evaluation procedure of composite blades considering impact damages is proposed by reviewing the practices implemented through domestic development projects.
Pressure tubes made of Zr-2.5 wt% Nb alloy are important components consisting reactor coolant pressure boundary of a pressurized heavy water reactor, in which unanticipated through-wall cracks and rupture may occur due to a delayed hydride cracking (DHC). The Canadian Standards Association has provided deterministic and probabilistic structural integrity evaluation procedures to protect pressure tubes against DHC. However, intuitive understanding and subsequent assessment of flaw behaviors are still insufficient due to complex degradation mechanisms and diverse influential parameters of DHC compared with those of stress corrosion cracking and fatigue crack growth phenomena. In the present study, a deterministic flaw assessment program was developed and applied for systematic integrity assessment of the pressure tubes. Based on the examination results dealing with effects of flaw shapes, pressure tube dimensional changes, hydrogen concentrations of pressure tubes and plant operation scenarios, a simple and rough method for effective cooldown operation was proposed to minimize DHC risks. The developed deterministic assessment program for pressure tubes can be used to derive further technical bases for probabilistic damage frequency assessment.

A failure evaluation diagram to evaluate fatigue fracture was developed. The relation between the fatigue limit and the threshold stress intensity factor for the short-cracked specimens of various materials including a piping carbon steel can be rationally predicted by the proposed method. It is shown that the coupled failure evaluation diagram for fatigue and ductile fracture is expecially useful for evaluation of the flaw tolerance as well as the margin of the safety of the pressure vessel and piping. Further, accumulation of fatigue data will be needed to construct an accurate fatigue failure evaluation diagram.
For the study of the fatigue behavior, high-strength bolted connections on a small scale were manufactured, and carried on fatigue tests. Its experimental values were analysed by stress-fatigue life (S-N) curve. Three types of specimens : the base metal, the cireular hole and the welded sperimens had same net section were made. Through the same tests those experimental values were compared with those of the high-strength bolted conneetions. The results of these studies are as followings. It was found that the fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the high-strength bolted conneetions were much more about 14% and 16% than that of the base metal specimen. It was thought that this trend was due to frictional force increasing fatigue strength. It was known that fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the welded joints were less 29% and 21% than that of base metal specimen. It was thought that that trend was due to weld flaw. It was appeared that the fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the high-strength bolted connections were much more about 38% and 30% than that of welded joint. It was thought that it was due to both frictional force increasing the fatigue strength in bolted connections and weld flaw decreasing the fatigue strength in welded connections. It was found that the fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the B3 specimens were much more 2% and -2% than that of the B4 specimen. It was thought that that trend was due to the frictional force, which concerned with shape of specimen. It was known that the fatigue strength in $F_{n=100,000}$ and $F_{n=2,000,000}$ of the specimen with circular hole was less 61% and 65% than that of base metal. It was known that the allowable stress for bolted joint was higher than that of welded Joints. If that research is continued and more data are accumulated it can be expected that a basic pattern to provided the indicator of the fatigue design of the bolted connections of steel structures and persume the safety and lifeproof of existing structures is given.
The behavior of fatigue was studied by using low carbon steel bar with microhole(artificial small defect) under the condition of rotary bending stress which is made artificially at smooth surface and round notch root. The results obtained can be summerized; The behavior of non-propagating cracks which are produced at both tips of small defect occurred to dissymmetry, and it is found to be double size of small defect. For the range of l>lc, threshold stress intensity is constant. However, for the range of l
