The polymer composites contain numerous internal boundaries and its structural elements have different responses and different resistances under the same service environment. Fatigue phenomenon is much more complex in composites than homogeneous materials. An understanding of the fracture behavior of polymer composite materials subjected to constant and cyclic loading is necessary for predicting the life time of structures fabricated with polymers. There is a need to acquire a better understanding of the fatigue performance and failure mechanisms of composites under such conditions. Therefore, in this study the analyses of fiber orientation and fracture mechanism for low cycle fatigue crack have been studied by SEM and LM for observing the ultrathin sections.
An elastic-plastic finite element analysis is performed to investigate detailed closure behavior of fatigue cracks and the numerical results are compared with experimental results. The finite element analysis performed under plane stress using 4-node isoparametric elements can predict fatigue crack closure behavior. The mesh of constant element size along crack surface can not predict the opening level of fatigue crack. The crack opening level for the constant mesh size increases linearly from initial crack growth. The crack opening level for variable mesh size, is almost flat after crack tip has passed the monotonic plastic zone. The prediction of crack opening level using the variable mesh size proportioning the reversed plastic zone size with the opening stress intensity factors presents a good agreement with the experimental data regardless of stress ratios.
In real structure, multi-point spot welded joints are more frequently used than a single-point spot welded joint. Most researches, however, have been focused to a single-point spot welded joint until now. In this paper, the fatigue behavior of multi-point spot welded joints are investigated both experimentally and analytically using the finite elements. The local strain approach is used rather than the stress intensity factor approach to estimate the fatigue life since the former is quite simple and straightforward. It is found that the fatigue behavior of multi-point spot welded joints is different from that of single-point spot welded joints. The local strain approach is still applicable to multi-point spot welded joints.

This research proposes a method to estimate the fatigue life of SSD(solid-state drive) due to the effect of dummy solder ball under forced vibration. A finite element model of the SSD was developed to simulate the forced vibration and a modal testing was performed to verify the developed finite element model. Fatigue life of the SSD under vibration was experimentally determined according to JEDEC standard in which the SSD was excited by a sinusoidal sweep vibration within the narrow frequency band around the first natural frequency until the SSD fails. Basquin's equation was introduced to estimate the fatigue life of the SSD due to the effect of dummy solder balls. It shows that the dummy solder balls are effective elements of the SSD to increase the fatigue life of an SSD by increasing 700 times of the fatigue life of the given SSD.
A fatigue damage caused by cyclic load is considered as one of the important failure mechanisms that threaten the integrity of structures and components in a nuclear power plant. In ASME code section III NB, the fatigue analysis procedure and standard S-N curves for the class 1 components are described and these criteria should be met at the design step of components. As the current ASME S-N curves are based on the very conservative assumptions such as a local stress concentration effect, immoderate transient frequencies and a constant Young's modulus, however, they can not precisely address the fatigue behavior of components. In order to find out the technical solution for these problems, a number of researches and discussion have been carried out continuously at home and abroad over the decades. In this study, detailed fatigue analyses for DVI nozzle with various mesh density of finite elements were performed to evaluate effect of stress concentration factors on the fatigue analysis procedure and the excessive conservatism of stress concentration factors are confirmed through the analysis results.

Factors that cause fatigue, such as circadian rhythm abnormalities, have adverse effects on long-haul flights. Among many elements, the present study focused on the flight crew's expertise as a crucial factor that could influence their fatigue. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate whether long-haul flights cause fatigue and to examine whether this symptom differed between low- and high-experienced flight crews. A total of 62 Korean flight crews were informed to perform a five-minute psychomotor vigilance task twice each before and after the flight to measure objective fatigue level. Also, they were asked to indicate current flight experience to identify their expertise. Results revealed that fatigue was significantly increased after the flight compared to before the flight but this increase was significant for flight crews with low expertise not for flight crews with high expertise. Implications of our findings and limitations of the present study were discussed.
Roller compacted concrete (RCC) used in the island reef airport runway will be subjected to the coupling actions of the fatigue impacts and the salt spray cycles, which will accelerate the deterioration of runway concrete and even threaten the flight safety. A cyclic impact testing machine and a climatic chamber were used to simulate the low-velocity fatigue impact and the salt spray cycles, respectively. The physical properties, the microstructures and the porosity of RCC were investigated. The results show the flexural strength firstly increases and then decreases with the increase of the fatigue impacts and the salt spray cycles. However, the decrease in the flexural strength is significantly earlier than the compressive strength of RCC only subjected to the salt spray cycles. The chlorine, sulfur and magnesium elements significantly increase in the pores of RCC subjected to 30000 fatigue impacts and 300 salt spray cycles, which causes the decrease in the porosity of RCC. The coupling effects of the fatigue impacts and the salt spray cycles in the later period accelerates the deterioration of RCC.

In this study, a spectral fatigue analysis was performed for the topside structure of an offshore floating vessel. The topside structure was idealized using beam elements in the SACS program. The fatigue analysis was carried out considering the wave and wind loads separately. For the wave-induced fatigue damage calculation, motion RAOs calculated from a direct wave load analysis and regular waves with different periods and unit wave heights were utilized. Then, the member end force transfer functions were generated covering all the loading conditions. Stress response transfer functions at each joint were produced using the specified SCFs and member end force transfer functions. fatigue damages were calculated using the obtained stress ranges, S-N curve, wave spectrum, heading probability of each loading condition, and their corresponding occurrences in the wave scatter diagrams. For the wind induced fatigue damage calculation, a dynamic wind spectral fatigue analysis was performed. First, a dynamic natural frequency analysis was performed to generate the structural dynamic characteristics, including the eigenvalues (natural frequencies), eigenvectors (mode shapes), and mass matrix. To adequately represent the dynamic characteristic of the structure, the number of modes was appropriately determined in the lateral direction. Second, a wind spectral fatigue analysis was performed using the mode shapes and mass data obtained from the previous results. In this analysis, the Weibull distribution of the wind speed occurrence, occurrence probability in each direction, damping coefficient, S-N curves, and SCF of each joint were defined and used. In particular, the wind fatigue damages were calculated under the assumption that the stress ranges followed a Rayleigh distribution. The total fatigue damages were calculated from the combination with wind and wave fatigue damages according to the DNV rule.
The finite element analysis was performed for the cracks existing in residual stress fields in order to investigate the effects of configuration of residual stress distribution to the fatigue crack opening behaviour. And the variation of stress distributions adjacent to the crack caused by uploading was examined. The finite element model with contact elements for the crack plane and plane stress elements for the base material and the analytical method based on the superposition principle to estimate crack opening behaviour and the stress distribution adjacent to the crack subjected to uploading were used. The results of the analysis showed that crack opening behaviors and variations of stress distribution caused by uploading were changed depending on the configuration of residual stress distribution. When the crack existed in the region of compressive residual stress and the configuration of compressive residual stress distribution were inclined, a partial crack opening just behind of a crack tip occurred during uploading. Based on the above results, it was clarified that the crack opening behaviour in the residual stress field could be predicted accurately by the finite element analysis using these analytical method and model.

It has been estimated that up to $80\%$ of all marine accidents have human elements as a cause. Out of these, human elements of crew fatigue is one of the main causes of marine accident. Crew fatigue involves sleep, schedule, workload, off-time, alcohol, health and stress. With a ship handling simulator, the effect of alcohol on ship operational performance is studied for each 0.05 and 0.08 $\%$ blood alcohol concentrations(BAC). The main effect of alcohol was found that ship operational performance was significantly impaired by alcohol compared to that in the non-alcohol condition. The results of this research can be used as basic data to minimize marine accidents.
