Fatigue behavior of circular hollow tube and wood filled circular hollow steel tube

  • This paper presents the experimental work on fatigue life and specific fatigue strength of circular hollow sectioned steel tube and wood filled circular hollow section steel tube. Burning effect was observed in the case of circular hollow sectioned steel tube when it is subjected to Maximum bending moment of 19613.30 N-mm at 4200 rpm, but this did not happen in the case of wood filled hollow section. Statistical analysis was done based on the experimental data and relations have been built to predict the number of cycles for the applied stress or vice versa. The relations built in this paper can safely be applied for design of the fatigue life or fatigue strength of circular hollow sections and wood filled hollow sections. Results were validated by static specific bending strengths determined by ANSYS using a known applied load.

Effect of Weld Residual Stress on Fatigue Analysis of Nozzle (노즐의 피로해석에 미치는 용접잔류응력의 영향)

  • Although the fatigue design curve of ASME Code has enough margin with respect to alternating stress and cycles, the welding residual stress(WRS) should be included in fatigue analysis. In this paper, WRS distribution in a nozzle with dissimilar metal weldment was obtained by finite element analysis and was added in fatigue analysis. The fatigue analysis was performed by following the ASME Code including thermal and stress analysis applying with postulated 30 transient conditions. The calculated results of a cumulative fatigue usage factors(CUF) were compared for the case of the models with or without WRS effects. The results showed that the CUF at weldment and heat affected zone was affected by the WRS.

  • A steel plate-concrete composite slab with pyramidal shear connectors, named TSC composite slab, is expected to have sufficient bending strength and flexural rigidity for loads during and after construction. Fatigue problems play an important role in designing composite slab as bridge decks under traffic conditions. In this paper, a series of fatigue tests was carried out on TSC beam specimens under various loading conditions, in order to evaluate the fatigue strength of TSC composite slabs. The results are as follows : (1) the fatigue failure of TSC composite beams results from the tensile fracture of bottom steel plate and shear connector, and (2) fatigue strength of the steel plate for two million cycles can be estimated to be $1144kgf/cm^2$ from the S-N curves.

Experimental study on fatigue behavior of innovative hollow composite bridge slabs

  • In order to study the fatigue performance of the flat steel plate-lightweight aggregate concrete hollow composite bridge slab subjected to fatigue load, both static test on two specimens and fatigue test on six specimens were conducted. The effects of the arrangement of the steel pipes, the amplitude of the fatigue load and the upper limit as well as lower limit of fatigue load on failure performance were investigated. Besides, for specimens in fatigue test, strains of the concrete, residual deflection, bending stiffness, residual bearing capacity and dynamic response were analyzed. Test results showed that the specimens failed in the fracture of the bottom flat steel plate regardless of the arrangement of the steel pipes. Moreover, the fatigue loading cycles of composite slab were mainly controlled by the amplitude of the fatigue load, but the influences of upper limit and lower limit of fatigue load on fatigue life was slight. The fatigue life of the composite bridge slabs can be determined by the fatigue strength of bottom flat steel plate, which can be calculated by the method of allowable stress amplitude in steel structure design code.

The changes of symptom, EKG and hemodynamic in healty firefighters after delivering multiple cycles of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (반복적인 심폐소생술 시행 후 건강한 소방대원에서 나타나는 증상, 심전도 및 혈역학적 변화)

  • The CPR guidelines emphasize the delivery of effective chest compressions but do not address the effects of chest compressions on CPR providers. This study determined the effects of chest compressions on healthy adult firefighters' symptoms, hemodynamics, and electrocardiography after performing multiple cycles of CPR. Healthy adult firefighters were trained in CPR and performed CPR on mannequins. The provider vital signs, electrocardiography, and fatigue scores were determined immediately before CPR, after 5cycles of CPR, and after 10 cycles of CPR. In addition, the presence of clinical symptoms among the providers was determined after CPR; 39 firefighters participated in the study. Their mean age was $35.54{\pm}10.26years$. Many providers developed fatigue, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Significant changes in heart rate (p=0.000), respiratory rate (p=0.010), end-tidal CO2(p=0.000), O2 saturation(p=0.000), and pulse pressure (p=0.000) were observed after both 5 and 10 cycles of CPR. One participant developed sinus dysrhythmia and premature ventricular contractions after 10 cycles of CPR. The delivery of chest compression results in fatigue and hemodynamic alterations in many young healthy adults after performing 5 or 10 cycles of CPR. The CPR guidelines and education should take into consideration the effects of chest compressions on CPR providers.

Fatigue properties of welded joints for TMCP steels (TMCP 고장력강 용접부의 피로 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Fatigue behavior of the AH, DH and EH grade TMCP(Thermo-Mechanical Control Process) steels was studied. High cycle and low cycle fatigue tests were carried out for the weldment and base metal of each steel. The results showed that the fatigue limit at 2 * $10^6$ cycles was 33 to 37 kg/$mm^2$ for the base metal and 30 to 34 kg/$mm^2$ for the weldment. The ratio of fatigue limit to tensile strength for TMCP steels was 0.65 to 0.71, which was a value close to the upper limit for the ordinary steels. It was also found that the high cycle fatigue behavior of TMCP steels could be affected by the microstructures of base metal. It will be necessary to have fine structure for TMCP steels to increase the fatigue resistance. In low cycle fatigue test, the fatigue lifetime of AH and DH steels accorded well with the ASME best fit curve, while that of EH steel was considerably lower than the fatigue lifetime of the other steels. Fatigue resistance of the weldment made by high heat input(180kJ/cm) welding was not lower than that made by low heat input(80kJ/cm) welding in case of high cycle fatigue, but the high heat input welding decreased the fatigue resistance in case of low cycle fatigue.

The Effects of Changing Duty Cycle With Electrical Stimulation on Blood Lactate and Plasma Enzyme (전기자극 시 활동주기 형태의 변화가 혈중젖산과 혈장효소에 미치는 영향)

  • By measuring changes in blood lactate and plasma enzyme (CPK, GOT, GPT) with electrical stimulation applied at two duty cycles, this study is intended to look into which type of duty cycle may have more effects on blood lactate and plasma enzyme constituents through animal experiment so as to determine any duty cycle appropriate for electrical treatment. In this study, electrical stimulation was applied to total 20 Korean house rabbits (weight: 3~3.5 kg) by means of an electrical therapeutic apparatus called TS6000 (made in Netherlands) at duty cycle of 50% and 20% respectively for 30 minutes. Here, 5 cc of blood was collected from their carotid artery before stimulation and in 30 minutes after stimulation respectively to carry out biochemical experiment and analysis. As determined through the above experiment, blood lactate rate was increased to 333.07% at 50% duty cycle after experiment and 185.71% at 20% duty cycle after experiment respectively. In both cases, blood lactate rate was significantly increased to higher level after electrical stimulation than before. Moreover, the rate of change in the average of blood lactate rate at both duty cycles also showed significant differences. CPK rate was boosted to 301.82% at 50% duty cycle after experiment and 321.35% at 20% duty cycle after experiment respectively. In both cases, CPK rate was remarkably boosted to higher level after stimulation than before (p<.05). However, there was not any significant difference in the rate of change in average CPK at both duty cycles (p<.05). GOT rate was significantly boosted up to 38.97% at 50% duty cycle after experiment (p<.05), while it was slightly increased to 1.68% at 20% duty cycle after experiment without any significant difference. Rather, GPT rate dropped slightly at both duty cycles after experiment, but there was not any significant difference. Although blood lactate and GOT were relatively less generated at 20% duty cycle after electrical stimulation than at 50% duty cycle, the change of duty cycle didn't have any significant influence on CPK rate. In this regard, this study failed to come any consistent conclusion about the association between change of duty cycle and muscle fatigue. Therefore, it is advisable that follow-up studies seek various ways to a little more effectively apply electrical stimulation to laboratory animals by avoiding their muscle fatigue. GOT rate was significantly boosted up to 38.97% at 50% duty cycle after experiment (p<.05), while it was slightly increased to 1.68% at 20% duty cycle after experiment without any significant difference. Rather, GPT rate dropped slightly at both duty cycles after experiment, but there was not any significant difference. Fatigue Strength Improvement and Fatigue Characteristics by TIG-Dressing on Weld Bead Toes (용접지단부 TIG처리에 의한 피로강도향상 및 피로특성)

  • The 4-point bending tests have been performed In order to estimate the effect of TIG-dressing on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue tests, fatigue strengths of as-welded specimens have satisfied the grade of fatigue strength prescribed in specifications of korea, AASHTO and JSSC. Fatigue strength at 2 million cycles of TIG-dressing specimens have increased compared with as-welded specimens. As the result of beachmark tests, fatigue cracks occurred at several points, where the radius of curvature and flank angle in the weld bead toes were low, and grew as semi-elliptical cracks, then approached to fracture. As a result of finite element analysis, stress concentration factor in weld bead toes has closely related to the flank angle and radius of curvature, and between these, the radius of curvature has more largely affected in stress concentration factor than flank angle. As a result of fracture mechanics approaches, the crack correction factor of test specimens has largely affected on stress gradient correction factor in case a/t is below 0.4. From the relations between stress intensity factor range estimated from FEM analysis and fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue life has been correctly calculated.

Improvement of Fatigue Strength by Spot Heating for Out-of-plane Gusset (국부가열을 이용한 면외거셋의 피로강도 향상)

  • In the study, the fatigue strength improvement and mechanism have been estimated by the Spot-Heating treatment on welded bead toes. For this, web-gusset specimens were made without residual stresses and the others with residual stresses imposed by Spot-Heating. The 4-point bending tests were performed in order to estimate the effect of spot-heating on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue test, fatigue strength of As-Welded specimen for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending has satisfied the grade of fatigue prescribed in specifications of korea, AASHTO and JSSC. As compare with As-Welded specimen and Spot-Heating specimen have increased about 20% for the fatigue strength at $7.7{\times}10^6$ cycles. The Spot-Heating by reformation of the residual stress on welded bead toes has greatly affected the fatigue crack propagation life, but has slightly affected the fatigue crack initiation life.

  • A methodology to evaluate fatigue vulnerability of steel bridge members affected by corrosion and truck traffic variation is proposed. A fatigue limit state function including corrosion and traffic variation effects is established to make the criterion whether the steel bridge member is damaged by fatigue. Corrosion effects are expressed as increase of the average corrosion depth, and the traffic variation effects are modeled as the accumulated number of stress cycles. Reliability analysis is carried out by Monte-Carlo simulation method for the fatigue limit state function. The methodology Proposed is verified by comparing reference study and applying for the steel bridge in service.
