  • Generally, as the welded region of weld structures has the incomplete bead and welded deposit which are able to behave like the surface cracks occasinally, there is a high possibility that the fatigue fracture of the weld structures is due to the surface cracks on the wlded region. This study was done to investigate the effects of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the fatigue behaviors of the surface crack of the heat affected zone (HAZ) for the multi-pass welds under the repetitive pure bending moment. The obtained results are summarized as follows : 1. The crack grows to the depth direction initially as the number of cylces increase, the amount of crack length is increased for the surface dir3ction and cive versa for the depth direction. 2. The fatigue life is increased in a order of as weld, PWHT specimens and parent. 3. As the number of cycles increase, the crack length is increased to th surface direction. The increase of the depth length is blunted at the center of specimen thickness. 4. The fatigue crack growth of PWHT specimens to the surface direction is dependent upon the holding time and applied stress during PWHT. In order words, the crack growth rate decreases with the holding time and increases with the applied stress during PWHT. 5. As the crack grows, the aspect formed in the course of crack propagation approaches to semicircle for parent and ellipse with the largest semidiameter for PWHT ($1/4hr, 15kgf/mm^2$) 6. At depth direction, it is difficult to apply to the paris' equation because of the scattered data between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor range.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation behavior in the Reduced Activation Ferritic Steel (RAFs) JLF-I. The fracture toughness tests were performed with various size(plane size and thickness) and various side groove of specimens. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of the JLF-I steel was investigated by the constant-amplitude loading test for the stress ratios R=O.I, 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. The effects of stress ratios and specimen size on the fatigue crack growth behaviors for JLF-I steel were discussed within the Paris law. The test results showed the standard CT specimen with the side groove of 40 % represented a valid fracture toughness. The fracture resistance curve increased with increasing plane size and decreased with increasing thickness. However, the fracture resistance curve of half size specimen was similar to that of the standard specimen. The fatigue crack propagation rate of a half size specimen was similar to that of a full size specimen at the stress ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of this material were evaluated by using a half size specimen.

  • In this paper, high strength pressure vessel steels having the same chemical compositions were manufactured by the two different steel-making processes, such as vacuum degassing(VD) and electro-slag remelting(ESR) methods. After the steel-making process, they were normalized at $955^{\circ}C$, quenched at $843^{\circ}C$, and finally tempered at $550^{\circ}C$ or $450^{\circ}C$, resulting in tempered martensitic microstructures with different yielding strengths depending on the tempering conditions. Low-cycle fatigue(LCF) tests, fatigue crack growth rate(FCGR) tests, and fracture toughness tests were performed to investigate the fatigue and fracture behaviors of the pressure vessel steels. In contrast to very similar monotonic, LCF, and FCGR behaviors between VD and ESR steels, a quite difference was noticed in the fracture toughness. Fracture toughness of ESR steel was higher than that of VD steel, being attributed to the removal of impurities in steel-making process.

  • Fatigue tests using a single-peak loading and a two-step loading were carried out to examine the fatigue crack growth behaviar and to find the appropriate analysis method. C-T specimens were made using structural steel SWS58 for the tests. From this, just after a single-peak loading acceleration effect was occured and after some times retardation effect was found. And eminent retardation effect was found after High-Low two-step loading. The transition effect of crack growth due to this variable loading was occured owing to the residual stress and the plastic zone size at the crack tip. And the behaviors of these are well explained by Elber's Crack Closure Model. Also I could find that the Wheeler's Retardation Model is a simple and appropriate theory among analysis methods of fatigue crack growth under the variable loading.

  • The estimation of the fatigue design life for large welded structures is usually performed using the liner cumulative damage method such as Palmgren-Miner rule or the equivalent damage method. When a fatigue crack is detected in a welded steel structure, the residual service life has to be estimated base on S-N curve method and liner elastic fracture mechanics. In this study, to examine the 3D fatigue crack behavior and estimate the fatigue life of out-of-plane gusset fillet welded joint, the fatigue tests were carried out on the model specimens. Investigations of three-dimensional fatigue crack propagation on gusset welded joint was used the finite element analysis of FEMAP with NX NASTRAN and FRANC3D. Fatigue crack growth analysis was carried out to demonstrate the effects of aspect ratio, initial crack length and stress ratio on out-of-plane gusset welded joints. In addition, the crack behaviors of fatigue tests were compared with those of the 3D crack propagation analysis in terms of changes in crack length and aspect ratio. From this analysis result, SIFs behaviors and crack propagation rate of gusset welded joint were shown to be similar fatigue test results and the fatigue life can also be predicted.

  • Near-threshold fatigue crack growth characteristics was investigated on the Ni-Cr-Mo-V low alloy steel, which has the different microstructure obtained by tempering at various temperature. The specimens were austenized at $950^{\circ}C$ and then followed by tempering at $200^{\circ}C$, $530^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. Strain rate was obtained from strain gauge attached on the crack tip and crack opening point was observed through load-strain curve. Threshold stress intensity range(${\Delta}K_{th}$) was increased with increasing tempering tempuerature, but the effective threshold stress intensity rage (${\Delta}K_{eff,\;th}$) was not affected with the increasing temperature. Grain size increased with increasing tempering temperature.

  • A simulation program concerned with multi-surface fatigue cracks which initiated at the semi-circular surface notches has been developed to predict their growth and coalescence behaviors at the elevated temperature. Three kinds of coalescence models such as SPC(surface point connection), ASME and BSI(British Standards Institution) conditions were applied, and the results of the simulation were compared with those of the experiment. This simulation is able to enhance the reliance and integrity of structures especially under the elevated temperature which have lots of difficulties in experiments and applications. This shows that the simulation result has utility for fatigue life prediction. Even though all the specimens were the same shape, the error rate was increased in accordance with the applied stress to the specimen. Among the material constants C and m in the narrow band, the results applied upper values of the band to the simulation has shown quite small error compared with the experiment results.

  • The retardation effect of fatigue crack propagation after cyclic overloading seems to be affected by strain hardening exponent. Namely, for the material with high values of n, the delay effect is found to be severe. We proposed a modified crack retardation equation which may apply the retardation of fatigue crack growth after a cyclic overloading, as (da/dN)'$_{cyc}$=($\mu$n+λ)B $\Delta$ $K^{q}$ /[(1- $R_{eff}$) $K_{cf}$$\Delta$K]. where, $R_{eff}$ is effective stress ratio [=( $K_{min}$-K, os)/( $K_{max}$$K_{res}$)] The constants $\mu$=-0.5 and λ=0.6, and the values are found to be identical for materials such as aluminum (A 1060), steel (SS 34), brass ( $B_{s}$ SIB) and stainless steel (SUS 304) used in this investigation. • This paper describes a study of fillet welded joint stressed perpendicular to the weld line. The finite element method was used to determine the stress intensity factor for cruciform joint at weld toe and root cracks according to variation of H/Tp, weld angle and main plate thickness. But, in this study, weld angle was fixed at 45.deg., since the variation of weld angle affect the stress intensity factor little, also main plate thickness was fixed. Pulsating tension fatigue test was done at the second phase of experiment. The work using the concepts of the fracture mechanics on the stable crack growth, was in the correlation of the experimental fatigue stress-life behavior because the fatigue behaviors of various joint geometries are related to the stress intensity factors calculated by F.E.M. analysis. Main results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) According to the propagation of toe crack, the variation of the stress intensity factor at root crack is obvious as H/Tp is smaller. 2) According to the propagation of root cracks, the change of the stress intensity factor of the toe is very large with propagation of root crack. 3) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor of crack propagation at the root crack was obtained. 4) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor at the toe cracks was obtained in similar manner. 5) From the results of experiment, the velocity of fatigue crack propagation at the weld toe and root was estimated.

  • Creep and fatigue tests were carried out on crack growth properties of small surface cracks in 304 stainless steel at 538.deg.C, 593.deg. C and 650.deg. C in air, by using small plate specimens with a small artificial pit. All the data of the crack growth rate per hour obtained in the present tests were correlated with the maximum stress intensity factor, so that the applicability of linear fracture mechanics to the crack growth of surface cracks at elevated temperature was investigated. In the creep test, relatiion of .sigma.$\^$n/.t$\_$f/=C is obtained between failure time and nominal stress at each temperature level, where n has the value of 11-14 depending on the temperature level. In the creep and fatigue crack growth properties of surface cracks at the elevated temperatures, the maximum stress intensity factor, $_{4}$$\_$max/, is some extent applicable parameter to describe the surface crack growth rate under the present experimental conditions. The crack growth rate per hour increases when the holding time decreases, and creep crack growth rate per hour becomes the lowest limit of crack growth rate per hour in this tests.
