Impact of overtime work on fatigue symptom in selected Korean female workers (우리나라 일부 여성근로자에서 초과근무가 피로증상에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : To investigate the effect of overtime work on fatigue symptoms among Korean female workers. Methods : A total of 1,875 subjects were analyzed using the structured questionnaire, which was composed of overtime work, fatigue symptom, and background characteristics. Data analysis included multiple regression to test for a relationship of overtime work with fatigue symptom while statistically controlling for demographic and occupational variables. Results : Overtime work was more common in those with shorter work years of 3 or less than in those with longer work years. Overtime work was more popular in day workers than in shift workers. No significant difference of smoking and drinking state was observed between two groups. Subjective fatigue symptoms were significantly higher in overtime workers than in workers without overtime work. In a multiple regression analysis with significant control variables, overtime work was associated with 0.31 more fatigue symptom(p<0.001). Conclusion : Our findings suggest that overtime work may increase risks for fatigue symptom. Therefore, preventive strategies will be needed to control the negative effect of overtime work on health status of female workers.

  • Fatigue tests were carried out to find the fatigue characteristics in the super-long life range by using a cantilever type rotational bending fatigue test machine. Three kinds of specimen in bearing steels with the quenched and tempered in air (A and B, B: shot peened after heal treatment) and under vacuum conditions(C:non-shot peened)were tested in this study. S-N curves obtained from fatigue tests of C specimen tend to come dawn again in the super-long life range due to fish-eye type cracking, while most of A and B specimens fractured by surface defects such as scratches and slip lines. This duplex S-N behavior for the high strength steels have to be reviewed by the change of fracture modes.

  • Cold-rolled carbon steel sheets are commonly used in railroad car or commercial vehicles such as the automobile. These are mainly fabricated by spot welding which is a kind of electric resistance welding. But fatigue strength of spot welding joint is lower than that of base metal due to high stress concentration at nugget edge of the spot welded part. And fatigue strength of them is especially influenced by not only geometrical and mechanical factors but also welding conditions of the spot welded joint. So for fatigue design of gas welded joints such as TS-type joints, it is necessary to obtain design information on stress distribution at the weldment as well as fatigue strength of spot welded joints. And also, the influence of the geometrical parameters of spot welded joints on stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. And analysis approach for fatigue test using design of experiment are evaluated optimum factor in TS-type welded joint and geometrical parameters of materials. Using these results, that factors applied to fundamental information for automation of fatigue design.

Damage Analysis of Turbopump Turbine considering Creep-Fatigue effects (크리프-피로 영향을 고려한 터보펌프 터빈의 손상해석)

  • Structures under high temperature may have creep behavior and fatigue behavior. Durability study of the structures need the damage analysis with the creep-fatigue effects. In this paper, the damage analysis is studied for a turbine blade in the turbopump for a liquid rocket engine which is operated under high temperature condition. First of all, the load cycle is required for defining the operational characteristics of turbopump. The thermal stress analysis is done for a turbine blade of the turbopump. The stress analysis results are used to judge damage due to the creep and the fatigue. The strain-life method with miner rule is used for fatigue damage analysis. The Larson-Miller parameter master curve and robinson rule are used for the creep damage analysis. The linear damage summation method is used to consider creep-fatigue effects of turbopump turbine. Finally, the analysis results for fatigue and the influence are compared to figure out the damage phenomenon of the turbopump turbine.

An Effect of Compressive Residual Stress on a High Temperature Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior of The Shot-peened Spring Steel (압축잔류응력이 스프링강의 고온환경 피로크랙 진전거동에 미치는 영향)

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, manufacturing process and new materials development for solving the fatigue fracture problem attendant upon high strength of suspension of automobile are actively advanced. In this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in high temperatures($100^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C,\;180^{\circ}C$) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings. (1) Compressive residual stress is decreased in high temperature, that is, with increasing temperature. (2) The effect of compressive residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior in high temperature is increased below ${\Delta}K=17{\sim}19MPa\sqrt{m}$. The fatigue crack growth rate is increased with increasing temperature. The fatigue life is decreased with increasing temperature. (3) The dependence of temperature and compressive residual stress on the parameters C and m in Paris' law formed the formulas such as equations (3),(4),(5),(6),(7),(8),(9),(10). (4) It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compress residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.

Therefore, the effects of compressive residual stress by shot-peening which is method to improve fatigue lift of spring steel (JISG SUP-9), which used in suspension of automobile, on fatigue crack growth characteristics was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings 1. The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the size of compressive residual stress and is dependent on Paris equation. 2. Although the maximum compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, fatigue life does not improve than when maximum compressive residual stress is formed in surface. 3. The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress. 4. In fracture surface of fatigue crack growth it is investigated that compressive residual stress remarkably retards fatigue crack growth.

The shot-peening method is used in order to improve the fatigue life of spring steel(JIS G SUP-9) which is used in suspension of automobile. The compressive residual is induced in this shot-peening process. This paper investigated the effect of the residual compressive stress on the fatigue crack growth characteristics. Main results are summarized as follows. 1. The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the level of compressive residual stress and is dependent on Paris equation. 2. Although the maximum compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, it does not improve the fatigue life comparing when maximum compressive residual stress is formed in surface. 3. The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress. 4. In fracture surface of fatigue crack growth it is investigated that compressive residual stress remarkably retards fatigue crack growth.

  • Reliability analysis of structures based on fracture mechanics requires knowledge on statistical characteristics of the parameter C and m in the fatigue crack growth law, $da/dN=C({\Delta}K)^m$. The purpose of the present study is to investigate if it is possible to predict fatigue crack growth rate by only the fluctuation of the parameter C. In this study, Paris-Erdogan law is adopted, where the author treat the parameter C as random and m as constant. The fluctuation of crack growth rate is assumed only due to the parameter C. The growth resistance coefficient of material to fatigue crack growth (Z=1/C) was treated as a spatial stochastic process, which varies randomly on the crack path. The theoretical crack growth rates at various stress intensity factor range are discussed. Constant ${\Delta}K$ fatigue crack growth tests were performed on the structural steel, SM45C. The experimental data were analyzed to determine the autocorrelation function and Weibull distributions of the fatigue crack growth resistance. And also, the effect of the parameter m of Paris' law due to variation of fatigue crack growth resistance was discussed.

  • Purpose: Nurses experience burnout related to various factors. For this descriptive research job stress, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue were examined as to their relationship to burnout in nurses from children's hospital. Methods: The participants were 305 nurses working in children's hospital. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure job stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout. Results: Nurses in children's hospital experienced a greater than moderate degree of job stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout, whereas differences existed according to general characteristics. Job stress, compassion fatigue and burnout showed a significant positive correlation and results of compassion fatigue and burnout were similar. Also, job stress, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue were associated with burnout in nurses working in children's hospital. Conclusion: Findings indicate that as longer work experience is accompanied by higher job stress and burnout, it is necessary to develop intervention programs to reduce burnout among career nurses exposed to greater job stress in children's hospital.

  • In order to estimate the fatigue life of mufflers at the early stage of researches and designs, the new prediction process was developed by the artificial neural network, which has the algorism of weldment properties. Bending fatigue test was carried out for defining the characteristics of muffler weldment fatigue life and damage. For considering and predicting mechanical and fatigue properties of the muffler, the maximum stress of weldment was adapted as the variable of artificial neural network training. Also, it was compared with the fatigue life predicting results using fatigue notch factors, for proving the newly developed process of the artificial neural network.
