Recently, information systems that require storage and retrieval of huge amount of data are becoming used widely. Accordingly, research efforts have been made to develop Linux cluster file systems in the SAN environment in which clients themselves can manage metadata and access data directly. Also a semi-flat directory structure based on extendible hashing has been proposed to support fast retrieval of files[1]. In this research, we have designed and implemented the semi-flat extendible hash directory under the Linux system. In order to evaluate the practicality of the directory, we have also implemented the B+-tree based directory and experimented the performance. According to the performance comparisons, the extendible hash directory has the better performance at insert, delete, and search operations. On the other hand, the B+-tree directory is better at sorting files.
A linguistic case-based fuzzy reasoning (LCBFR) based on standardized parametric membership functions (SPMF) is proposed. It provides an efficient mechanism for a fuzzy reasoning within linear time complexity. Thus, it can be used to improve the speed of fuzzy reasoning. In the process of LCBFR, linguistic case indexing and retrieval based on SPMF is suggested. It can be processed relatively fast compared to the previous linguistic approximation methods. From the engineering viewpoint, it may be a valuable advantage.
MPEG-7 standardization work has started with the aims of providing fundamental tools for describing multimedia contents. MPEG-7 defines the syntax and semantics of descriptors and description schemes so that they may be used as fundamental tools for multimedia content description. In this paper, we introduce a texture based image description and retrieval method, which is adopted as the homogeneous texture descriptor in the visual part of the MPEG-7 final committee draft. The current MPEG-7 homogeneous texture descriptor consists of the mean, the standard deviation value of an image, energy, and energy deviation values of Fourier transform of the image. These are extracted from partitioned frequency channels based on the human visual system (HVS). For reliable extraction of the texture descriptor, Radon transformation is employed. This is suitable for HVS behavior. We also introduce various matching methods; for example, intensity-invariant, rotation-invariant and/or scale-invariant matching. This technique retrieves relevant texture images when the user gives a querying texture image. In order to show the promising performance of the texture descriptor, we take the experimental results with the MPEG-7 test sets. Experimental results show that the MPEG-7 texture descriptor gives an efficient and effective retrieval rate. Furthermore, it gives fast feature extraction time for constructing the texture descriptor.
In this paper, an effective color image retrieval algorithm is proposed based on the graph representation. Also we propose a color constancy algorithm to remove the effect of illumination change. Illumination condition of an image can be transformed to that of reference image using the proposed color constancy algorithm, so that the effect of dirrerent lighting is significantly alleviated. Then, we represent a color image as a graph with several nodes and edges in the histogram space, and finally two images are matched by compared two graphs representing them. The simulation results show that the proposed 3-step algorithm performs well for various conditions, including different lighting, translation, rotation, and scaling of the object in the image. In addition, the proposed algorithm is very fast compared to the geometry-based matching technique.
This paper proposes RCB(Reduced Compact Binary) trie to correct faults of CB(Compact Binary) trie. First, in the case of CB trie, a compact structure was tried for the first time, but as the amount of data was increasing, that of inputted data gained and much difficulty was experienced in insertion due to the dummy nods used in balancing trees. On the other hand, if the HCB trie realized hierarchically, given certain depth to prevent the map from increasing on the right, reached the depth, the method for making new trees and connecting to them was used. Eventually, fast progress could be made in the inputting and searching speed, but this had a disadvantage of the storage space becoming bigger because of the use of dummy nods like CB trie and of many tree links. In the case of RCB trie in this thesis, a capacity is increased by about 60% by completely cutting down dummy nods.

Vast amount of XML documents raise interests in how they will be used and how far their usage can be expanded. This paper has two central goals: 1) easy and fast retrieval of XML documents or relevant elements; and 2) efficient and stable management of large-size XML documents. The keys to develop such a practical system are how to segment a large XML document to smaller fragments and how to store them. In order to achieve these goals, we designed SCOF(Service-centric Object Fragmentation) model, which is a semi-decomposition method based on conversion rules provided by XML database managers. Keyword-based search using SCOF model then retrieves the specific elements or attributes of XML documents, just as typical XML query language does. Even though this approach needs the wisdom of managers in XML document collection, SCOF model makes it efficient both retrieval and management of massive XML documents.

This paper presents a new key frame extraction technique, for scene change detection, using the proposed AHIM (Accumulative Histogram Intersection Measure) from the DC image constructed by DCT DC coefficients in the compressed video sequence that is video compression standard such as MPEG. For fast content-based browsing and video retrieval in a video database, we also provide a novel coarse-to-fine video indexing scheme. In the extracted key frame, we perform the region segmentation as a preprocessing. First, the segmented image is projected with the horizontal direction, then we transform the result into a histogram, which is saved as a database index. In the second step, we calculate the moments and change them into a distance value. From the simulation results, the proposed method clearly shows the validity and superiority in respect of computation time and memory space, and that in conjunction with other techniques for indexing, such as color, can provide a powerful framework for image indexing and retrieval.

As environmental issues are emerging, many efforts are globally conducted to reduce waste of energies and resources for green growth, as well as low-carbon emitting and replacement of document papers with digital files and images. On the other hand, it may require much time and efforts for users to find the proper image files on the web, where enormous un-standardized digital files are flourishing. Therefore, power and resource consumption may also grow up again in searching and retrieving files. This paper suggests efficient system design and implementation for fast and precise massive image contents retrieval for saving the energies and resources. Eventually it will contribute to green growth in computing environment.

In this paper, we proposed fast and efficient algorithm for detecting near-duplication based on content based retrieval in large scale video database. For handling large amounts of video easily, we split the video into small segment using scene change detection. In case of video services and copyright related business models, it is need to technology that detect near-duplicates, that longer matched video than to search video containing short part or a frame of original. To detect near-duplicate video, we proposed motion distribution and frame descriptor in a video segment. The motion distribution descriptor is constructed by obtaining motion vector from macro blocks during the video decoding process. When matching between descriptors, we use the motion distribution descriptor as filtering to improving matching speed. However, motion distribution has low discriminability. To improve discrimination, we decide to identification using frame descriptor extracted from selected representative frames within a scene segmentation. The proposed algorithm shows high success rate and low false alarm rate. In addition, the matching speed of this descriptor is very fast, we confirm this algorithm can be useful to practical application.
