  • Resin transfer molding (RTM) is a mass production process that allows the fabrication of composites ranging in size from small to large. Recently, fast curing resins with a curing time of less than about 10 minutes have been used in the automotive and aerospace industries. The viscosity of resin is bound up with the degree of cure, and it can be changed rapidly in the fast-cure resin system during the mold filling process. Therefore, it is advantageous to experimentally measure and evaluate the degree of cure because it requires much effort to predict the flow characteristics and cure of the fast curing resin. DMA and dielectric technique are the typical methods to measure the degree of cure of composite materials. In this paper, the resin flow and degree of cure were measured through the multi-channel dielectric system. A total of 8 channels of dielectric sensors were used and resin flow and degree of cure were measured and compared with each other under various pressure conditions.

  • To overcome troubles in strength and process of linerboard caused by raw materials, a neutral sizing which is usual in fine paper making can be considered. A new sizing agent is necessary to show good performance in a system with high conductivity and COD. In this study, fast cure type AKD was examined as a new sizing agent and compared with conventional AKD. The effects of fixing agent addition and drying condition were also investigated. Fast cure type AKD which has a higher cationicity showed better sizing degree than conventional AKD in spite of low addition level and no curing treatment. And when fixing agent of sufficient amount was added, sizing degree was improved for both AKDs. High cationicity is a crucial factor for neutral sizing of linerboard for obtaining fast and stable sizing degree. Drying with temperature over $100^{\circ}$ was desirable for developing sizing degree.

  • Neutral sizing is required for linerboard to solve the troubles in strength and process caused by recycled raw materials. AKD sizing efficiency can be influenced by process condition like white water quality, fines retention and so on. Therefore, this study was aimed to evaluate sizing performance of general and fast cure type AKDs using process water obtained from linerboard mill. To evaluate effect of process water quality on AKD sizing, white water was diluted with tap water at the different dilution ratios and UKP slurry was sized using the prepared water. Also, effects of inorganic and organic ion material on sizing were examined. When white water was used for stock forming, UKP sheet showed very low sizing degree. Sizing degree of sheet was increased with increase of dilution ratio because water quality was improved. Especially anionic organic material had a greater influence on AKD sizing than inorganic material. When white water quality was deteriorated, fast cure type AKD showed superior sizing performance to general type AKD.

  • In this research, we studied curing and filler systems for preparation of fast cure SMC and low-density SMC, respectivly. Two curing systems were evaluated for fast cure SMC formulation. One is a mixed initiator system and the other is an activator system. For low-density SMC, glass micro-baloon(GMB) was used as a filler. Various SMC formulations were cured in an appropriate way, and their curing behavior and physical/mechanical properties were characterized. Curing rates were increased with increasing quantity of mixed initiator and activator, but mechanical properties were not affected. As the quantities of GMB increased, density and mechanical properties were decreased.

  • To accelerate the cure of phenolic resin adhesives for plywood, the complexation with melamine resin and the addition of cure-accelerating agents were discussed. The hot-pressing temperature and time of phenol resin could be decreased by complexation with melamine resin. but the wet glue-joints strength of phenol melamine resin was lower than that of ordinary phenol resin in case of plywood using spruce veneer at core layer. Among the tested cure-accelerating agents. the sodium carbonate showed the greatest effect on shortening gelation time of phenolic resin. In addition, in the manufacturing scale test, the hot-pressing time of phenol resin with the addition of 5 parts sodium carbonate could be shortened about 20% compared with ordinary phenol resin which had same glue-joints properties.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cure type on the processing and physical properties under conditions of similar stress-strain properties. On the carbon black filled natural rubber(NR) based compound, the induction time decreased, but the cure rate became fast with increasing loading of sulfur donor agent. Tensile strength was little affected on the curing type. However, elongation generally decreased with increasing accelerator. Effect of cure type on the blow-out properties was followings: CV

  • 1. A good retarder reacts fast with MBT and. forms a non-scorchy accelerator. 2. The decrease in cure rate$(k_1)$ is attributable to the slow cure rate of 2-cyclohexyldithiobenzothiazole(CDB). 3. Cyclohexyl polysulfides(CPS) and cyclohexylthioamine are believed to be also involved in the cure retardation. 4. The new retarder can stop crosslinking by intercepting the crosslink precursors. 5. Formation of cyclohexyl polysulfides and their lack of curing property may be responsible for the low state of cure when the new retarde is used. These results are schematically summarized in Figure 7.

  • Cure characteristics of DGEBA(diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A)/dicy(dicyandiamide) system containing diuron(3-(3,4-dichloro phenyl) -1,1-dimethylurea) as an accelerator was investigated. The system has shelf life of six months because dicy is insoluble in liquid/solid resins at room temperature. It is generally known that dicy is an adequate curing agent for one component adhesive due to its highly latent property. With increasing the amount of added dicy, reaction heat of DGEBA/dicy system increased and degree of conversion was not varied. For DGEBA/dicy/diuron system, cure temperature decreased about $40^{\circ}C$ and cure reaction became fast by the addition of diuron which activates dicy. $T_g$ of the mixed resin decreased with the amount of accelerator. which was interpreated with molecular structure forming loose chain. Cure kinetics of DGEBA/dicy and DGEBA/dicy/diuron system were explained using Kamal's autocatalytic reaction model. The effect of acceleration was confirmed with that reaction model.

  • In the 1840s, Goodyear found out sulfur cure system, but cure time was too slow. So producing of rubber product takes a long time. In 1904, Oenslager et al. found that aniline is accelerated sulfur cure system. Recently, many rubber industries needed high yield and good quality. So, many researchers have studied a rubber system with fast vulcanization time and good mechanical properties. In this study, cure characteristics and mechanical properties of NR/BR compounds by accelerator with MBTS(2,2' Dithiobisbenzothiazole), TMTM(Tetramethylthiuram Monosulfide), ZDMC (Zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate), CBS(N-Cyclohexyl benzothiazolyl-2-sulfenamide), DPG(Diphenylguanidine) were evaluated. The results of the study indicate that cure charateristics($t_{90}$: 235 sec, $T_{max}$: 5.77 Nm) and mechanical properties (100, 300% modulus : 2,180, 5.656 Mpa and tear strength: 59.58 kgf/cm) of NR/BR compounds shows efficient acceleration with MBTS 1.5 phr, TMTM 0.5 phr, DPG 0.15phr. This is due to the synergistic activity of ternary accelerator system in rubber vulcanization.
