A shear connection between the steel beam and concrete slab determines the stability of composite beams. An extensive numerical study to evaluate the resistance of the shear connection in a solid slab at high temperature was conducted. Three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element models were developed using a dynamic explicit method and concrete damaged plasticity model. Temperature-dependent plasticity parameters of the concrete model were proposed, and the accuracy of the developed model was obtained against experimental data. This investigation has revealed that a stud shearing failure occurs regardless of temperatures, and its shearing location changes in accordance with a rise in temperature. A new strength reduction formula has been presented to estimate the resistance of the shear connection at high temperatures.
A thermal decomposition of the tert-butoxy radical has been studied in the gas phase over the pressure range of 1-200 torr at $413_{\circ}K$ using di-tert-butyl peroxide + trimethylsilane mixtures. The relative rate constants were obtained by studying the competitive reactions between tert-butoxy radical decomposition 4(t-BuO·→ CH_3COCH_3 + CH_3·)$ and hydrogen abstraction reaction from trimethylsilane $(t-BuO·+ HSi(CH_3)_3 → t-BuOH + Si(CH_3)_3)·).$ The conventional RRKM calculations were carried out to compare the observed fall-off behavior of the decomposition rate constant $({\kappa}_d)$ with the theoretical predictions using reasonable values of input parameters. In all cases the calculated half-rate pressure $(P_{1/2})$ were significantly higher than those observed. The failure of RRKM to reproduce the fall-off behavior led us to suggest that not all of vibrational modes contribute to excitation (leading to decomposition) on the same time scale.
Investigating remained damages from terrible earthquakes, it could be concluded that some events including explosion because of defect and failure in the building mechanical facilities or caused by gas leak, firing, aftershocks, etc., which are occurred during or a few time after the earthquake, will increase the effects of damages. In this paper, by introducing a complete risk analysis which included direct and indirect risks for earthquake (the main shock) and aftershock, the corresponding robustness index was created that called as "robustness index sequential critical events risk-based". One of the main properties of the intended robustness index is using progressive collapse percentage in its evaluation. Then, in a numerical example for a 4-storey moment resisting steel frame structure, a method is presented for obtaining all effective parameters in robustness index evaluation based on the intended risk and at last its results were reported.
The TCD is used as one of the indicators for determining whether TSV Hole is defective. If the TCD is not normal size, it can lead to contamination of the CMP equipment or failure to connect the upper and lower chips. We propose a deep learning model for measuring the TCD. To verify the performance of the proposed model, we compared the prediction results of the proposed model for 2461 via holes with the CD-SEM measurement data and the prediction results of the existing model. Although the number of trainable parameters in the proposed model was about one two-thousandth of the existing model, the results were comparable. The experiment showed that the correlation between CD-SEM and the prediction results of the proposed model measured 98%, the mean absolute difference was 0.051um, the standard deviation of the absolute difference was 0.045um, and the maximum absolute difference was 0.299um on average.
This paper proposes an algorithm for signal validation using unsupervised methods in emergency situations at nuclear power plants (NPPs) when signals are rapidly changing. The algorithm aims to determine the stuck failures of signals in real time based on a variational auto-encoder (VAE), which employs unsupervised learning, and long short-term memory (LSTM). The application of unsupervised learning enables the algorithm to detect a wide range of stuck failures, even those that are not trained. First, this paper discusses the potential failure modes of signals in NPPs and reviews previous studies conducted on signal validation. Then, an algorithm for detecting signal failures is proposed by applying LSTM and VAE. To overcome the typical problems of unsupervised learning processes, such as trainability and performance issues, several optimizations are carried out to select the inputs, determine the hyper-parameters of the network, and establish the thresholds to identify signal failures. Finally, the proposed algorithm is validated and demonstrated using a compact nuclear simulator.
In this paper, a new approach of interface stress analysis in steel beam strengthened by porous FGM (Functionally Graded Materials) is presented to calculate the shear stress in the hybrid steel beam and loaded by a uniformly distributed load. The results show that there exists a high concentration of shear stress at the ends of the imperfect FGM, which might result in premature failure of the strengthening scheme at these locations. A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the sensitivity of interface behavior to parameters such as the rigidity of FGM plate (degree of homogeneity), the porosity index of FGM and the thickness of adhesive all were found to have a marked effect on the magnitude of maximum shear stress in the FGM member. we can conclude that the new approach is general in nature and may be applicable to all kinds of materials.
Direct containment heating (DCH) is one of the potential factors leading to early containment failure. DCH is closely related to safety analysis and containment performance evaluation of nuclear power plants. In this study, a DCH prediction program was developed to analyze the DCH loads of containment vessel. The phenomenological model of debris dispersal, metal oxidation reaction, debris-atmospheric heat transfer and hydrogen jet burn was established. Code assessment was performed by comparing with several separate effect tests and integral effect tests. The comparison between the predicted results and experimental data shows that the program can predict the key parameters such as peak pressure, temperature, and hydrogen production in containment well, and for most comparisons the relative errors can be maintained within 20%. Among them, the prediction uncertainty of hydrogen production is slightly larger. The analysis shows that the main sources of the error are the difference of time scale and the oxidation of cavity debris.
The axial compression behavior of nine self-compacting concrete columns confined with CFRP-PVC spirals was studied. Three parameters of spiral reinforcement spacing, spiral reinforcement diameter and height diameter ratio were studied. The test results show that the CFRP strip and PVC tube are destroyed first, and the spiral reinforcement and longitudinal reinforcement yield. The results show that with the increase of spiral reinforcement spacing, the peak bearing capacity decreases, but the ductility increases; with the increase of spiral reinforcement diameter, the peak bearing capacity increases, but has little effect on ductility, and the specimen with the ratio of height to diameter of 7.5 has the best mechanical properties. According to the reasonable constitutive relation of material, the finite element model of axial compression is established. Based on the verified finite element model, the stress mechanism is revealed. Finally, the composite constraint model and bearing capacity calculation method are proposed.
Snap-buckling is one of the main failure modes of structures, because it will lead to the reduction of structural bearing capacity, durability loss and even structural damage. Boundary condition plays an important role in the research of engineering mechanics. Further discussion on the boundary conditions problems will help to analyze the dynamic and static behavior of structures more accurately. Therefore, in order to understand the dynamic and static behavior of curved beams more comprehensively, this paper mainly studies the nonlinear snap-through buckling and forced vibration characteristics of functionally graded graphene reinforced composites (FG-GPLRCs) curved beams with two different boundary conditions (including clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged) using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (E-BBT). In addition, the effects of the curved beam radius, the GLPs distributions, number of GLPs layers, the mass fraction of GLPs and elastic foundation parameters on the nonlinear snap-through buckling and forced vibration behavior are discussed respectively.
Reinforced concrete (RC) beam column joints (BCJ) have mostly exhibited poor seismic performance during several past earthquakes, typically due to the poor-quality concrete or lack of reinforcement detailing typical of pre-code design practice. The present study is motivated towards numerical simulation and seismic fragility assessment of one such RC-BCJ. The BCJ is loaded to failure and strengthened using Ultra High Performance-Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-HFRC) jacketing. The strengthening is performed for four different BCJ specimens, each representing an intermediate damage state before collapse. viz., slight, moderate, severe, and collapse. From the numerical simulation of all the BCJ specimens, an attempt is made to correlate different modelling and design parameters of the BC joint with respect to the damage states. In addition, seismic fragility analysis of the original as well as the retrofitted damaged BCJ specimens show the relative enhancement achieved in each case.
