  • There is an increasing interest in condition-based maintenance for the prevention of economic loss due to failure. Moreover, immense research is being carried out in related technologies in the field of construction machinery. In particular, data-based failure diagnosis methods that employ AI (machine & deep learning) algorithms are in the spotlight. In this study, we have focused on the failure diagnosis and mode classification of reduction gear of excavator's travel device by using the AI algorithm. In addition, a remote monitoring system has been developed that can monitor the status of the reduction gear by using the developed diagnosis algorithm. The failure diagnosis algorithm was performed in the process of data acquisition of normal and abnormal under various operating conditions, data processing and analysis by the wavelet transformation, and learning. The developed algorithm was verified based on three-evaluation conditions. Finally, we have built a system that can check the status of the reduction gear of travel devices on the web using the Edge platform, which is embedded with the failure diagnosis algorithm and cloud.

  • A flume experiments was used to study the characteristics of the surface displacements and volumetric water contents (VWC) during torrential rain. The surface displacement and VWC of the granite weathered soil were measured for rainfall intensity (100, 200 mm/hr) and initial ground condition (VWC 7, 14, 26%). The test processes were also recorded by video cameras. According to the test results, The shallow failure is classified into three types: retrogressive failure, progressive failure and defined failure. In the case of retrogressive failure and progressive failure, relatively large damage could occur due to the feature that soil is deposited to the bottom of the slope. the shallow failure occurred when the VWC reached a certain value regardless of the initial soil condition. It was found that the shallow failure can be predicted through the increase patton of the VWC under the condition of the ground dry condition (VWC 7%) and the natural condition (VWC 14%). For high rainfall intensity, progressive failure predominated, and rainfall intensity above a certain level did not affect wetting front transition.

  • It has become important to evaluate the qualitive reliability and condition assessment of existing structural systems in order to establish a rational program for repair and maintenance. Since most of if existing structural system may suffer from defect corrosion and damage, it is necessary to account for their effects in fuzzy reliability analysis, In this paper, an attempt is made to develope a reliability analysis for damaged structural systems using failure possibility theory. Damage state is specified in terms of linguistic valiables using natural language information and numerical information, which are defined by fuzzy sets. Using a subjective condition index of failure possibility and information of the damage state is introduced into the calculation of failure probability. The subjective condition index of quantitative and qualitative analysis method is newly proposed based on the fuzzy set operations, namely logical product, drastic product, logical sum and drastic sum

  • In this paper, we have verified the performance of ballistic resistance material on wet condition. Considering Korea terrain, soldiers may face many rivers and streams. However, bullet-proof jacket has no waterproofing and there's no water-proof standard in Military. Wearing wet bullet-proof jacket, soldiers can't be protected properly because of the decrement of jacket. Thus, we measure the performance of existing material on wet condition and analyze failure mechanism in order to indicate factors to improve bullet-proof jacket.

  • Behavior of rock mass depend on the mechanical properties of intact rock and geometrical property of discontinuity distributed in rock mass. In case of rock slope, particularly, location of slope failure surface and behavior after failure are changed due to discontinuities. In this study, two 3D slope stability analysis methods were developed for two different failure types which are circular failure and planar failure, considering that failure type of rock slope is dependent on scale of discontinuity which was then applied to real rock slope to review the applicability. In case of circular failure, stable condition was maintained in natural dry condition, which however became unstable when the moisture content of the surface was increased by rainfall. In case of planar failure, rock slope become more unstable comparing to dry condition which is attributable to decrease in friction angle of discontinuity surface due to rainfall. Viewing analysis result above, analysis method proved to have well incorporated the phenomenon occurred on real slope from the analysis result, demonstrating its applicability to reviewing the slope stability as well as to maintaining the slope.

  • Experimental and discrete element method were used to investigate the effects of joint number and its angularities on the shear behaviour of joint's bridge area. A new shear test condition was used to model the gypsum cracks under shear loading. Gypsum samples with dimension of 120 mm×100 mm×50 mm were prepared. the length of joints was 2cm. in experimental tests, the joint number is 1, 2 and 3 and its angularities change from 0° to 90° with increment of 45°. Assuming a plane strain condition, special rectangular models are prepared with dimension of 120 mm×100 mm. similar to joints configuration in experimental test, 9 models with different joint number and joint angularities were prepared. This testing show that the failure process is mostly governed by the joint number and joint angularities. The shear strengths of the specimens are related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. The shear behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the rock bridge length. The strength of samples decreases by increasing the joint number and joint angularities. Failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both of the experimental test and numerical simulation.

  • In general, slope failures are occurred by the interaction among various factors(slope shape, hydraulic condition, and geologic condition, etc.). In the area where has a heavy rainfall, a great portion of slope failures are caused by seepage increasement with suitable failure condition. Many studies have been performed to find the cause of large-scale failures. In this study, three Cut-Slope failures caused by typhoon 'MAEMI' were investigated to find out factors causing large-scale slope failures. It was confirmed in this research that major reason of slope failures was the weak layer working along with other unstable factor. The large-scaled investigation concerning Cut-Slope will be needed to find out the Weak Layer.

  • Condition monitoring plays a vital role since it sustains the reliable operation of industrial plant and machinery in the pursuit of economic whole life operation. In order to achieve this goal, it is needed to monitor various parameters of mechanical system such as vibration, wear, temperature, and etc., and finally to diagnosis the root causes of any possible abnormal machine condition. In this work, we constructed a rotor system where various types of functional machine failures occurred frequently in industry were induced. Characteristics of the machine failure were monitored simultaneously by the on-line measurement of vibration, wear and temperature. Result showed that these parameters responded differently to the induced functional machine failure. The availability of each parameter on effective condition monitoring was discussed in this work.

  • In spite of progress in tribological research, machine component failure due to friction and wear has been reported frequently. This failure may lead to secondary damage that can cause huge expense for maintenance and repair. To prevent economic loss, it is important to detect and predict the initial failure point. In this sense, various researchers have been tried to develop Condition Monitoring (CM) method using Acoustic Emission (AE) generated while the materials undergo failure. In this study, effect of particles on friction and wear was investigated using the pin-on-plate friction test and AE signal was recorded with a band-width type AE sensor. The experiments were performed in dry and lubricant conditions using steel and glass as specimens. After the experiment, 3D laser microscope image was captured to evaluate the wear behavior quantitatively. The AE signal was analyzed in time-domain and frequency-domain. The amplitude was compared with the frictional results. The results of this study showed that particle generation accelerate wear, generate high magnitude AE signal and change the frequency characteristics of the signal. Also, lubricant condition test results showed low coefficient of friction, low wear rate, and low magnitude of AE signal compared to the dry condition. It is expected that the results of this study will aid in better assessment of wear in CM technology
