  • This paper considers a consecutive k-out-of-n:F system when the failure of a component in the system induces higher failure rate of the preceding survivor. The reliability, mean time to failure(MTTF), and average failure number of a consecutive k-out-of-n:F system are obtained, when the failure of a component increases the failure rate of the survivor which is working just before the failed component. Then the optimal number of consecutive failed components to minimize this long run average cost rate can be obtained. An example is considered to calculate the reliability, MTTF and average failure number of the system. And two procedures that find the optimal number of consecutive failed components are studied. Then, various cases of system parameters are also studied.

  • Objects : This study was to report a clinical effect of Chuna Treatment for HIVD-cervical spine Failed Back Surgery Syndrome(FBSS) patient. Methods : In order to alleviate both arm tingling, numbness and neck stiffness, the patient was treated by acupuncture therapy, cervical traction technique of Chuna treatment and conservative managements. To evaluate the effect of the treatment, Recovery rate of Hirabayashi, Verbal Numerical Rating Scale(VNRS) and Neck Disability Index(NDI) score were used. Results : VNRS and NDI were improved and Recovery rate was 100%. Conclusions : Korean Treatment can be effectively used for a patient with HIVD-cervical spine FBSS patient. Further clinical studies are needed to verify the findings.

  • In terms of safety and the efficient management of spent fuel storage, detecting failed fuel is one of the most important tasks in a CANada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactor operation. It has been successfully demonstrated that in a CANDU reactor, on-power failed fuel detection and location systems, along with alarm area gamma monitors, can detect and locate defective and suspect fuel bundles before discharging them from the reactor to the spent fuel storage bay. In the reception bay, however, only visual inspection has been used to identify suspect bundles. Gaseous fission product and delayed neutron monitoring systems cannot precisely distinguish failed fuel elements from each fuel bundle. This study reports the use of a sipping system in a CANDU reactor for the integrity assessment of spent fuel bundles. The integrity assessment of spent fuel bundles using this sipping system has shown promise as a nondestructive test for detecting a defective fuel bundle in a CANDU reactor.

  • Widespread propagation of failure can be triggered by localized damage to a structure because of fires, impact and explosion etc. In this paper, the progressive collapse analysis program is developed to automatically check the failed members and construct the modified structural model at each step. OpenSees, that is widely used in many research groups, was used for the developed progressive collapse analysis control program. The control program developed in this study automatically computes the damage indices of all the structural members and performance a progressive collapse analysis after the first failed member is selected. Using the developed program, we compared the progressive collapse behaviors of the example structures considering dynamic effects or not, and the difference of progressive collapse mechanism according to the modeling method of the failed members.

  • Microfracture as a reparative strategy is the treatment of choice for an osteochondral lesion of talus. Although the results of microfracture are generally excellent, at least 30% of patients who received microfracture have acute or chronic ankle pain with several or unknown causes. The most important factor for unsatisfactory outcome after microfracture is the size of the lesion. For failed osteochondral lesion of talus, the second options are autologous osteochondral graft, autologous chondrocyte implantation, or re-microfracture. In this article, we present the autologous chondrocyte implantation as a second procedure for failed microfracture and compare its clinical outcome with other methods based on a literature review.

  • The author experienced a failed ase of root resection which qas performed on the abnormal upper right lateral incisor. The patient was 16year old female. Clinically the effected tooth had neither a carious cavity nor periondontal diseases, ut, a fistula was present on the gum tissue near the root apex. The roentogenogram revealed a pathological area around the apex of the tooth. The results of failed apicoectomy lead to following conclusions. 1. The operated tooth was a case of dense invaginatus which had two pulp cavities and two canals seperated along their entire length. 2. It was the main cause of failure that the second pulp cavity and root canal were not obturated.

  • This article concerns a profit model in a repair limit replacement problem with imperfect repair. If a system fails, we should decide whether we repair the failed system (repair option) or replace it by new one (replacement option with a lead time). We assume that repair times are random variables and can be estimated before repair with estimation error. If the estimated repair time is less than the specified limit (repair time limit), the failed unit is repaired but the unit after repair is different from the new one (imperfect repair). Otherwise, we order a new unit to replace the failed unit. The long run average profit (expected profit rate) is used as an optimization criterion and the optimal repair time limit maximizes the expected profit rate. Some special cases are derived.

  • Objectives: To report the efficacy of traditional Korean medicine to an infertile patient who repeatedly failed in vitro fertilization. Methods: The patient was diagnosed with adenomyosis and failed in vitro fertilization 9 times. Her dysmenorrhea and physical symptoms were improved through traditional Korean medicine and she was pregnant with the 10th attempt of in vitro fertilization. She had bleeding during pregnancy due to adenomyosis and took herbal medicines to maintain stable condition. Results: During the treatment period, the uterine thickness due to adenomyosis was reduced and her dysmenorrhea was improved. She was pregnant by in vitro fertilization and gave birth to a healthy child by Caesarean section. Conclusions: This case report shows that traditional Korean medical treatments work to improve the success rate of in vitro fertilization.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to report the spontaneous pregnancy of Jokyung-san-gagam treatments on two infertile patients who were failed to in intrauterine insemination (IUI) by three times. Methods: Two patients, in this case, were who failed three times IUI were treated with Jokyung-san-gagam, acupuncture and moxibustion. Results: The two infertile women achieved spontaneous pregnancy after taking Jokyung-san-gagam without assisted reproductive technology. Conclusions: These cases suggest that Jokyung-san-gagam is effective in treating infertile female after failure in IUI and can be an effective option for patients who were failed in IUI. For further study, the clinical approach on infertile patients that is based on Korean medicine treatment including Jokyung-san-gagam would be sustained.
