This study investigated the growth of five phytopathogenic fungi including Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Diaporthe citri, Phytophthora capsici and others according to different concentrations of water extract in order to provide reference data for developing environment-friendly agricultural materials using five native Fagaceae species including Quercus acuta, Quercus salicina, Quercus glauca, Quercus gilva and Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii. As the concentration of aqueous extracts of Fagaceae increased according to donor plants, the mycelial growth of phytopathogens showed a decreasing tendency. Differences were found in the degree of inhibition according to types of donor plants and pathogenic fungi. Diaporthe citri, Phytophthora capsici, Pythium graminicola on the water extract of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii inhibited mycelial growth by 84% in 25% of the treatment group and by 87% in more than half of the treatment group. The water extract of Quercus acuta was found to have no inhibitory effect against the mycelial growth of Diaporthe citri. The aqueous extracts of Quercus salicina, Quercus glauca and Quercus gilva insignificantly inhibited mycelial growth by approximately 15%. The total phenolic content of receptor plants exhibiting antifungal activity was highest in Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii with a content of 22.32 mg/g phenols, followed by Quercus salicina with 8.32 mg/g, Quercus glauca with 6.83 mg/g, Quercus gilva with 5.95 mg/g, and Quercus acuta with 5.24 mg/g. The aqueous extracts of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii among the five Five Fagaceae Plants of were the most effective antifungal activity.
From the methanolic extractive of the fruits of Quercus acutissima $C_{ARRUTHERS}$(Fagaceae) a mixture(QC-A saponin) of two ester glycosides, which were named as dotorioside I(3) and ll(4), was separated by silica gel column chromatography and HPLC. The structures of these two glycosides including their genuine aglycones(1,2) were elucidated as 1: $2{\alpha}$, $3{\beta}$, $19{\alpha}$, 23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid, 2: $2{\alpha}$, $3{\beta}$, $19{\alpha}$, 23-tetrahydroxyurs-12-en-28-oci acid, 3: 28-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl ester of 1, 4: 28-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl ester of 2, respectively, on the basis of chemical and spectral evidence.
The collapse of four domestic Fagaceae species was observed in relation with their moisture content(MC), basic density, P (Percent of moisture content saturation of the wood) and Q (Percent of cell cavity volume containing water) and the variation of collapse phenomenon in the cross section of stem was also investigated. The results were summarized as follows : The values of collapse in each species were great in order of Quercus dentata, Quercus variabilis, Quercus aliena and Quercus mongolica and the values were higher in heartwood than in sapwood in all of specimen. MC, basic density, P and Q were important factors which affected on the occurance of collapse and the collapse phenomenon was decreased from pith to bark.
The rate of photosynthesis (A) of leaves from 10 plant species (6 evergreen and 4 deciduous) of the family Fagaceae was measured using a portable photosynthesis analyzer, to examine which species take up $CO_2$ most efficiently. Of the evergreen species, the photosynthetic rate of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii was highest, and remained above 82.1~106.4 ${\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}s^{-1}$ from July to November. Of the deciduous species, the photosynthetic rate of Quercus acutissima was higher than that of the other three species, and remained high at 83.5~116.6 ${\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}s^{-1}$ from September to November. The photosynthetic rate of the 10 species was positively correlated with stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E). However, there was no correlation between photosynthetic rate and intercellular $CO_2$ concentration ($C_i$), although there was a positive correlation just in three species (Q. gilva, Q. acutissima and Q. glauca). These results suggest that the $CO_2$ fixation capacity of C. cuspidata var. sieboldii, an evergreen species, and Q. acutissima, a deciduous species, is significantly higher than that of the other species examined, and that photosynthesis is regulated by both stomatal conductance and transpiration. Therefore, C. cuspidata var. sieboldii and Q. acutissima may be valuable for the evaluation of carbon uptake in urban green spaces as well as in afforested areas.
Pollens and their preparations that are being sold as a health food in Korea were examined for. morphology and identity. The Iimall packages of sixteen items of the pollen foods were selected and investigated by staining and microscopy. It was shown that all fifteen items except one contained intact pollens which retain their sporoderms. On the basis of their morphological characteristics, they were identified as the pollens of the plants which belong to ten families: Betulaceae, Compositae, Cornaceae, Cgperaceae, Fagaceae, Geraniaceae, Graminae, LeguminoBae, Liliaceae and Pinaceae. Since the sporoderms which can act as a potent allergen to certain persons were not removed, these pollen. foods can not be safe as a food and. may cause systemic allergy. The only preparation that did not show its sporoderm is less likely to cause allergy than the others.
This study was carried out in the peatland for estimating the paleoenvironment based on the analysis from its fossils plant and radiocarbon at the Hwayang-ri, Hyeondeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek-city, South Korea. Variety of fossil was collected from the peatland which could discriminated with naked eye and sorted into seeds, leaves, stems from four-stage of standard sieve. During analysis for the large plant fossil within the peatland, the dead plants were largely divided into 3 fossil zones according to its peatland. In the fossil zone III (the oldest layer; 6,970~6,070 yr $C^{14}$ B.P.), the observation of leaves of hydrophyte such as Trapa sp. and stems of Alnus japonica which appeared in wetland means that the environment was influenced by the climate changes such as rainfall increasing and sea level rise. In the fossil zone II (the middle layer; 6,070~5,800 yr C14 B.P.), the occurrence of Gramineae, Cyperaceae and Fagaceae indicate that the environmental condition might be more or less dry by decreasing rainfall and drop in sea level. The fossil zone I (the recent layer; 5,800~4,540 yr $C^{14}$ B.P.) where lots of herbaceous plants, increasing of Fagaceae, decreasing of A. japonica. and distribution of Pinaceae were showed, was inferred to be repeated both dry and wet environment due to human disturbance.

Hot water extracts of 141 indigenous plants were screened for antibacterial activity against 7 Gram (+) and 12 Gram (-) bacteria by agar diffusion method. Of the 141 plants tested, 55 showed antibacterial activity against one or more species of Gram (+) bacteria and especially extracts of Oenothera stricta Ledebour (Onagraceae), Quercus variabilis Blume (Fagaceae), Alnus firma (Betulaceae), Geranium thunbergii (Geraniaceae), Lagerstroemia indica (Lythraceae) showed broad spectrum antibacterial activity on over 6 strains. Of the 141 plants tested, 45 showed antibacterial activity against one or more species of Gram (-) bacteria and especially extracts of Oenothera stricta Ledebour (Onagraceae), Punica granatum (Lythraceae), Quercus variabilis Blume (Fagaceae), Schizandra chinensis Baillon (Magnoliaceae), Alnus firma (Betulaceae), Alnus hirsuta (Betulaceae), Magnolia kobus (Magnoliaceae) showed broad spectrum antibacterial activity on over 8 strains. The most active antibacterial plants were Oenothera stricta Ledebour (Onagraceae), Punica granatum (Lythraceae), Quercus variabilis Blume (Fagaceae), Schizandra chinensis Baillon (Magnoliaceae) which are edible as permitted by Korea Food & Drug Adminstration. With in-depth research, the hot water extracts of these plants can be applied as food preservatives and alternatives of antimicrobials for livestock feeds.
The forest vegetation of the Korean Peninsula is dominated by deciduous Fagaceae forests. The study aimed to comparethe correlation between species composition and environmental factors in Namsan, Odaesan, and Ulleungdo. A vegetation survey of 75 sites was conducted from May to August 2018. Seven vegetation types were classified. The inland representative vegetation was classified as a Quercus mongolica community, and the island representative vegetation was classified as a Fagus multinervis community. The Quercus mongolica community was subdivided into the Aria alnifolia group, representative of cities, and the Tilia amurensis group, representative of mountainous regions. Analysis of important values and indicator species to examine the succession trends according to regional types showed that urban and island forestswere maintained as Fagaceae communities, and that mountainous region foreststransitioned to broadleaf species, such as Tilia amurensis and Carpinus cordata. A CCA analysis of vegetation type and site environmental factors showed that altitude had the biggest effect on species composition at the same latitude. The study results should contribute to a better understanding of the Korean Peninsula forest ecosystem characteristics and provide basic data for establishing a systematic conservation and restoration plan.
