  • An experimental investigation of the fatigue through crack growth behavior under simple stepped variable loading condition has been performed using Al7075-T651. Experiments were carried out by using cantilever bending type specimens, with chevron notches on a small electro-magnetic test machine. Tensile overloads have a retarding effect on the fatigue crack growth rates, therefore tensile overloads were used for the beneficial effect on the fatigue life. While in most cases compressive overloads have only a vanishing effect on crack growth rates, some experiments with single edge crack tension specimens reveal a marked growth retardation. The stress ratios used in this investigations varies from R=0.32 to 0.81, from R=0.04 to 0.76, from R=-0.15 to 0.73, and from R=-0.33 to 0.68 and the peak load for each case was not varied. The crack growth and crack closure were measured by Kikukawa's compliance method with a strain gauge mounted on the backside of each specimens. The results obtained are as follows. When the stepped variable load was applied, the smaller the stress ration was, the larger the delayed retardation of the crack growth rate was. The fatigue crack growh rate data obtained for through cracks were plotted well against the effective stress intensity factor range from 4.0 to 20.0MP{a^{SQRT}m}. It was found that the effective stress intensity factor range ratio was related well to the opening stress intensity factor, the maximum stress intensity factor, and crack length.

  • Substructure pseudo-dynamic hybrid simulation (SPDHS) combining the advantages of physical experiments and numerical simulation has become an important testing method for evaluating the dynamic responses of structures. Various parameter identification methods have been proposed for online model updating. However, if there is large model gap between the assumed numerical models and the real models, the parameter identification methods will cause large prediction errors. This study presents an ANN (artificial neural network) method based on forgetting factor. During the SPDHS of model updating, a dynamic sample window is formed in each loading step with forgetting factor to keep balance between the new samples and historical ones. The effectiveness and anti-noise ability of this method are evaluated by numerical analysis of a six-story frame structure with BRBs (Buckling Restrained Brace). One BRB is simulated in OpenFresco as the experimental substructure, while the rest is modeled in MATLAB. The results show that ANN is able to present more hysteresis behaviors that do not exist in the initial assumed numerical models. It is demonstrated that the proposed method has good adaptability and prediction accuracy of restoring force even under different loading histories.

  • A series of test on concrete-filled composite columns was preformed to evaluate structural performance under axial compression and cyclic lateral loading. It was presented that concrete-filled composite columns had high strength, high stiffness and large energy-absorption capacity on account of mutual confinement between the steel plate and filled-in concrete. A cross section analysis procedure developed to predict the moment-curvature relation of composite columns was proven to be on accurate and effective method. The ductility factor and the response modification factor were evaluated for the seismic design of concrete-filled composite columns. It was shown that concrete-filled composite columns could be used as a very efficient earthquake-resistant structural member.

  • The stress analysis on orthotropic composite cylindrical shells with one circular or one elliptical cutout subjected to an axial force is carried out by using an analytical and experimental method. The composite cylindrical shell governing equation of the Donnell's type is applied to this study and all results are presented by the stress concentration factor. The stress concentration factor is defined as the ratio of the stress on the region around a cutout to the nominal stress of the shell. The stress concentration factor is classified into the circumferential stress concentration factors and the radial stress concentration factors due to the cylindrical coordinate of which the origin is the center of a cutout. The considered loading condition is only axial tension loading condition. In this study, thus, the maximum stress is induced on perpendicular region against axial direction, on the coordinate. Various cutout sizes are expressed using the radius ratio, (equation omitted), which is the radius of a cutout over one of the cylindrical shell. Experimental results are obtained using strain gages, which are attached around a cutout of the cylindrical shell. As the result from this study, the stress concentration around a cutout can be predicted by using the analytical method for an orthotropic composite cylindrical shell having a circular or an elliptical cutout.

  • Near-infrared spectra of methanol-water mixtures and acetonitrile-water mixtures were acquired to find interactions between solvents widely used for reverse-phase liquid chromatography. Mixtures were prepared to give a series of increasing mole fractions of methanol or acetonitrile in water. Data matrices of acquired spectra were analyzed to determine the proper number of principal components of each mixture system using Malinowski's factor indicator function. Initial guess of score matrix and loading matrix were calculated by nonlinear iterative partial least squares (NIPALS) algorithm for faster computation. Iterative target transform factor analysis (ITTFA) was applied to convert the initial estimation of score matrix to true concentration profile and loading matrix to pure spectra of pure components of the mixtures. In case of methanol-water the number of principal components was found to be 4 and those initial guess of factors were converted to the pure spectra of water methanol and two kinds of complexes. In case of acetonitrile-water the number of pure components of the mixtures was found to be 3 and the pure spectrum of acetonitrile-water complex was found. The nonlinear characteristics of concentration profiles of complexes in the solvent mixtures may give a good criteria in understanding their elution characteristics in reverse-phase liquid chromatogrsphy.

  • By rising the interests of the railroad, It has been required the research about railroad structure. And since 2000, the study about railway bridges caused by steel box railway bridges has been only 0.2 %. So I was hard to find out about steel box railway bridges. In this study, I evaluate and analyze 4 types(KTX, Saemaeul, Mugunghwa, Freight) of dynamic caused by train loading, natural frequency and damping ratio, verticality deflection and verticality acceleration, end slope deflection, impact factor for dynamic characteristics analysis. natural frequency was measured 2.45 Hz~3.34 Hz and damping ratio revealed for 1.26~2.84 %. Maximum verticality deflection(4.86 mm) was sufficiently satisfied the design criteria(30.1 mm), but in the case of verticality acceleration's respond, design criteria BRDM(bridge design manual) & CTRL presentation derive rail limit value 0.35 g be more than value 6 time recorded, maximum was measured 0.49 g in 3 kinds of train(KTX, Saemaeul, Mugunghwa), except for Freight. Survey impact factor of Experiment bridge was 0.20 which is measured when the KTX(15:04) was driving. impact factor is enough contended with design criteria 0.29 which is presented in domestic railway design criteria and thoroughly guarantee the dynamic stability.

  • Present study computes the ultimate bearing capacity of an embedded strip footing situated on the rock slope subjected to seismic loading. Influences of embedment depth of strip footing, horizontal seismic acceleration coefficient, rock slope angle, Geological Strength Index, normalized uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass, disturbance factor, and Hoek-Brown material constant are studied in detail. To perform the analysis, the lower bound finite element limit analysis method in combination with the semidefinite programming is utilized. From the results of the present study, it can be found that the magnitude of the bearing capacity factor reduces quite substantially with an increment in the seismic loading. In addition, with the increment in slope angle, further reduction in the value of the bearing capacity factor is observed. On the other hand, with an increment in the embedment depth, an increment in the value of the bearing capacity factor is found. Stress contours are presented to describe the combined failure mechanism of the footing-rock slope system in the presence of static as well as seismic loadings for the different embedment depths.

  • This work aims to explore the static behaviour of a tapered functionally graded porous plate (FGPP) with even and uneven porosity distributions resting on two parametric elastic foundations. The plate under investigation is subjected to bi-sinusoidal loading and the edges of the plate are exposed to different combinations of edge restrictions. In order to examin the static behaviour, bending factors (BF) related to bending and normal stresses have been evaluated using classical plate theory. To achieve this, the governing equations have been derived employing the energy concept. And to solve it, the Rayleigh-Ritz method with an algebraic function has been utilised; it is simple, precise, and computationally intensive. After convergence and validation analyses, new findings are made available. The BF of the plate have been exhaustively examined to explain the influence of aspect ratios, material property index, porosity factor, taper factor, and Winkler and Pasternak stiffness. It is observed that the BF of an elastically supported FGPP are influenced by the index of material propery and the aspect ratio. Findings also indicate that the impact of porosity is more when it is spread evenly, as opposed to when it is unevenly distributed. Further, the deformed plate's structure is significantly influenced by the different thickness variations. Examination of bending characteristics of FGPP having different new cases of thickness variations with different types of porosity distribution under fifteen different mixed edge constraints is the prime novality of this work. Results presented are reliable enough to be taken into account for future studies.

  • This study was carried out to select proper loading speed for deformation strength ($S_D$) of asphalt mixtures. Kim test using loading head of diameter(40mm) with radius(10mm) was conducted to measure $S_D$ in different loading speed (10mm/min, 30mm/min, 50mm/min, 70mm/min) and wheel tracking test was also conducted. The regression analyses between the So values and WT results were carried out by loading speeds. Higher $S_D$ was observed as increasing loading speed. This means that loading speed is a high influencing factor on $S_D$. The loading speed of 30mm/min was found as an optimum for better correlation with WT results than any other speeds from the regression analysis between $S_D$ and wheel tracking test results. $S_D$ value measured at other loading speed than 30mm/min has to apply the conversion coefficients.
