In this paper we concentrate on overall direction of the gaze based on a head pose for human computer interaction. To decide a gaze direction of user in a image, it is important to pick up facial feature exactly. For this, we binarize the input image and search two eyes and the mouth through the similarity of each block ( aspect ratio, size, and average gray value ) and geometric information of face at the binarized image. We create a imaginary plane on the line made by features of the real face and the pin hole of the camera to decide the head orientation. We call it the virtual facial plane. The position of a virtual facial plane is estimated through projected facial feature on the image plane. We find a gaze direction using the surface normal vector of the virtual facial plane. This study using popular PC camera will contribute practical usage of gaze tracking technology.

To avoid influences caused by pose, illumination and facial expression variations, we propose a robust three-step algorithm based on ASM and POEM for facial landmark localization. Firstly, Model Selection Factor is utilized to achieve a pose-free initialized shape. Then, we use the global shape model of ASM to describe the whole face and the texture model POEM to adjust the position of each landmark. Thirdly, a second localization is presented to discriminatively refine the subtle shape variation for some organs and contours. Experiments are conducted in four main face datasets, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method accurately localizes facial landmarks and outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.
This paper presents a probabilistic head tracking method, mainly applicable to face recognition and human robot interaction, which can robustly track human head against various variations such as pose/scale change, illumination change, and background clutters. Compared to conventional particle filter based approaches, the proposed method can effectively track a human head by regularizing the sample space and sequentially weighting multiple visual cues, in the prediction and observation stages, respectively. Experimental results show the robustness of the proposed method, and it is worthy to be mentioned that some proposed probabilistic framework could be easily applied to other object tracking problems.
Recently, research on behavior analysis tracking human posture and movement has been actively conducted. In particular, OpenPose, an open-source software developed by CMU in 2017, is a representative method for estimating human appearance and behavior. OpenPose can detect and estimate various body parts of a person, such as height, face, and hands in real-time, making it applicable to various fields such as smart healthcare, exercise training, security systems, and medical fields. In this paper, we propose a method for classifying four exercise movements - Squat, Walk, Wave, and Fall-down - which are most commonly performed by users in the gym, using OpenPose-based deep learning models, DNN and CNN. The training data is collected by capturing the user's movements through recorded videos and real-time camera captures. The collected dataset undergoes preprocessing using OpenPose. The preprocessed dataset is then used to train the proposed DNN and CNN models for exercise movement classification. The performance errors of the proposed models are evaluated using MSE, RMSE, and MAE. The performance evaluation results showed that the proposed DNN model outperformed the proposed CNN model.

The statistical analysis of the feature extraction and the neural networks are proposed to recognize a human face. In the preprocessing step, the normalized skin color map with Gaussian functions is employed to extract the region of face candidate. The feature information in the region of the face candidate is used to detect the face region. In the recognition step, as a tested, the 120 images of 10 persons are trained by the backpropagation algorithm. The images of each person are obtained from the various direction, pose, and facial expression. Input variables of the neural networks are the geometrical feature information and the feature information that comes from the eigenface spaces. The simulation results of$.$10 persons show that the proposed method yields high recognition rates.

In this paper, we propose a method which detects the nose and face of certain human by using the depth image. The proposed method has advantages of the low computational complexity and the high accuracy even in dark environment. Also, the detection accuracy of nose and face does not change in various postures. The proposed method first locates the locally protruding part from the depth image of the human body captured through the depth camera, and then confirms the nose through the depth characteristic of the nose and surrounding pixels. After finding the correct pixel of the nose, we determine the region of interest centered on the nose. In this case, the size of the region of interest is variable depending on the depth value of the nose. Then, face region can be found by performing binarization using the depth histogram in the region of interest. The proposed method can detect the nose and the face accurately regardless of the pose or the illumination of the captured area.

This paper proposes a method of estimating location of a target point at which an interactive robot gazes in an indoor space. RGB images are extracted from low-cost web-cams, user head pose is obtained from the face detection (Openface) module, and geometric configurations are applied to estimate the user's gaze direction in the 3D space. The coordinates of the target point at which the user stares are finally measured through the correlation between the estimated gaze direction and the plane on the table plane.

Purpose In the many face-related application such as head pose estimation, 3D face modeling, facial appearance manipulation, the robust and fast facial feature extraction is necessary. We present the facial feature extraction method based on shape regression and feature selection for real-time facial feature extraction. Materials and Methods The facial features are initialized by statistical shape model and then the shape of facial features are deformed iteratively according to the texture pattern which is selected on the feature pool. Results We obtain fast and robust facial feature extraction result with error less than 4% and processing time less than 12 ms. The alignment error is measured by average of ratio of pixel difference to inter-ocular distance. Conclusion The accuracy and processing time of the method is enough to apply facial feature based application and can be used on the face beautification or 3D face modeling.

In video surveillance system, the exposure of a person's face is a serious threat to personal privacy. To protect the personal privacy in large amount of videos, an automatic face detection method is required to locate and mask the person's face. However, in real-world surveillance videos, the effectiveness of existing face detection methods could deteriorate due to large variations in facial appearance (e.g., facial pose, illumination etc.) or degraded face (e.g., occluded face, low-resolution face etc.). This paper proposes a new face detection method based on multi-level facial features. In a video frame, different kinds of spatial features are independently extracted, and analyzed, which could complement each other in the aforementioned challenges. Temporal domain analysis is also exploited to consolidate the proposed method. Experimental results show that, compared to competing methods, the proposed method is able to achieve very high recall rates while maintaining acceptable precision rates.
