  • Purpose: Dermoid cysts are benign neoplasms that are derived from both ectoderm and mesoderm. Approximately 7 percent of all dermoid cysts occur in the head and neck, as most common sites are the lateral ends of the eyebrows, the midline in the nasal root and neck. Rarely they can be found in the frontal sinus, temporal bone, maxilla and the floor of the mouth. Dermoid cysts in the temporal fossa are extremely rare. We experienced a characteristic dermoid cyst that occupied the temporal fossa. Methods: A 16-year-old man had a progressive enlarging mass on the left eyebrow. Computerized tomographic scan showed a bulging mass in the temporal fossa, and it had the density similar to that of fat. The size of the mass was $3{\times}3{\times}2cm$, and it was composed of high density of fat with clear margin. There was no bony invasion, but the mass was fixed on bone. Results: We performed the surgery through coronal incision under general anesthesia. Because the mass was closely connected with temporal fat pads, we removed this mass with some portion of temporal fat pads, avoiding damage to the facial nerve. The postoperative course was ordinary without complication. Conclusion: The reports about dermoid cyst on the temporal fossa is uncommon. However, if there is a mass in the temporal fossa which has the density similar to that of fat in CT scan, we should consider the possibility of dermoid cyst. We suggest that excision through coronal incision with bewaring temporal fat pad can induce good result.

  • The purpose of this study is to consider the characteristics of beauty culture in the latter period of Chosun Dynasty from the viewpoint of public morals and find out how characteristic beauty culture was developed along with traditional culture. Therefore, the clothes, the make-up, the style of beard and hair were examined and the beauty culture of women in the latter period Chosun Dynasty was considered. The changes of the beauty culture on the genre painting and the characteristics of the latter period Chosun Dynasty were analyzed. Conclusions are as follows ;First, in case of woman dress, the Korean Jergori was short and the Chima was too long. Due to the diversification of wearing, the underpants play as a decorations. Second, the hair which focus on the cleanness and the sanitation and the skin maintenance method were important. The make-up focus on make-up with powder which emphasis on the slim and round eyebrow, the small and thick lips for the beauty look of the latter period Chosun Dynasty. Third, a unmarried woman did the braids('Taun Muri') and a feme covert did 'Unseen Muri'. As people cling to the big and head of hairs gradually, the chignon('Terae Muri') was in fashion. The beauty culture in the latter period of Chosun Dynasty clothes and cosmetic treatment style were generalized through nobility, common people, lowly people. The imitation mentality which follow after Gisaeng style that led the fashion of that period was shown up. With understanding the beauty culture of the latter period of Chosun Dynasty, the study on the traditional beauty culture should be revitalized. This study help to uplift the pride on Korea traditional culture and to promote the globalization of Korean culture.

  • Objective : As a minimally invasive strategy, endoscopic technique was introduced for removal of the traumatic intracerebral hematoma. Material and Method : A 54-year-old man with three-day history of seizure and progressive mental deterioration after traffic accident was presented. Computerized Tomography(CT) of the brain showed a huge intracerebral hematoma on the right frontal lobe and ventricle. The operation was performed via right frontal superolateral keyhole with 2cm eyebrow skin incision. Using 0-degree and 30-degree angled lens 4mm rigid endoscopes, nearly all of the hematoma was evacuated under the direct endoscopic visualization and a ventricular catheter was exactly placed into the frontal horn of the right lateral ventricle at the end of procedure. Results : The seizure was discontinued and neurological status had been improved during postoperative periods. Postoperative CT demonstrated that most of the hematoma was removed and the ventricular drainge tube was exactly placed in the right foramen of Monro. Conclusion : With endoscopic technique, the authors successfully evacuated traumatic intracerebral hematoma and exactly placed the ventricular drainage catheter under direct visualization. This technique may be considered as an another option for removal of traumatic intracerebral hematoma.

  • This paper proposed a recognition algorithm of human facial expressions using the PCA and the template matching. Firstly, face image is acquired using the Haar-like feature mask from an input image. The face image is divided into two images. One is the upper image including eye and eyebrow. The other is the lower image including mouth and jaw. The extraction of facial components, such as eye and mouth, begins getting eye image and mouth image. Then an eigenface is produced by the PCA training process with learning images. An eigeneye and an eigenmouth are produced from the eigenface. The eye image is obtained by the template matching the upper image with the eigeneye, and the mouth image is obtained by the template matching the lower image with the eigenmouth. The face recognition uses geometrical properties of the eye and mouth. The simulation results show that the proposed method has superior extraction ratio rather than previous results; the extraction ratio of mouth image is particularly reached to 99%. The face recognition system using the proposed method shows that recognition ratio is greater than 80% about three facial expressions, which are fright, being angered, happiness.

  • Recently, eye image information has been widely used for iris recognition or gaze detection in biometrics or human computer interaction. According as long distance camera-based system is increasing for user's convenience, the noises such as eyebrow, forehead and skin areas which can degrade the accuracy of eye detection are included in the captured image. And fast processing speed is also required in this system in addition to the high accuracy of eye detection. So, we compared the most widely used algorithms for eye detection such as AdaBoost eye detection algorithm, adaptive template matching+AdaBoost algorithm, CAMShift+AdaBoost algorithm and rapid eye detection method. And these methods were compared with images including light changes, naive eye and the cases wearing contact lens or eyeglasses in terms of accuracy and processing speed.

  • Locating exact position of facial components is a key preprocessing for realizing highly accurate and reliable face recognition schemes. In this paper, we propose a simple but powerful method for detecting isolated facial components such as eyebrows, eyes, and a mouth, which are horizontally oriented and have relatively dark gray levels. The method is based on the shape-resolving locally optimum thresholding that may guarantee isolated detection of each component. We show that pure facial regions can be determined by grouping facial features satisfying simple geometric constraints on unique facial structure. In the test for over 1000 images in the AR -face database, pure facial regions were detected correctly for each face image without wearing glasses. Very few errors occurred in the face images wearing glasses with a thick frame because of the occluded eyebrow -pairs. The proposed scheme may be best suited for the later stage of classification using either the mappings or a template matching, because of its capability of handling rotational and translational variations.

  • This paper describes facial component detection and skew correction algorithm for face recognition. We use a priori knowledge and models about isolated regions to detect eye location from the face image captured in natural office environments. The relations between human face components are represented by several rules. We adopt an edge detection algorithm using sobel mask and 8-connected labelling algorith using array pointers. A labeled image has many isolated components. initially, the eye size rules are used. Eye size rules are not affected much by irregular input image conditions. Eye size rules size, and limited in the ratio between gorizontal and vertical sizes. By the eye size rule, 2 ~ 16 candidate eye components can be detected. Next, candidate eye parirs are verified by the information of location and shape, and one eye pair location is decided using face models about eye and eyebrow. Once we extract eye regions, we connect the center points of the two eyes and calculate the angle between them. Then we rotate the face to compensate for the angle so that the two eyes on a horizontal line. We tested 120 input images form 40 people, and achieved 91.7% success rate using eye size rules and face model. The main reasons of the 8.3% failure are due to components adjacent to eyes such as eyebrows. To detect facial components from the failed images, we are developing a mouth region processing module.

  • Objective & Methods : In the point of several medical books included 'Internal Classic' and Hyungsang medicine, the writer studied about meridian theory and it's disorders, after adapting to acupuncture and herb medicine. Results : 1. Dr. Jisan explained concretely physiological and pathological meridian appearances with using metaphor about phenomenons of nature and human living. 2. Shapes corresponding to meridian are considered as Yukkyunghyung formed by more or less of vigor and blood, and by tendency of up and down in eyes and nose, and also contained diseases of viscera and characters. 3. The colors connected with meridian are changed according to conditions, and meridian is seen through colors. And then colors is the properties of vital energy and symbol of spirit, that is expressed as aspect of essence, vigor, spirit and blood, as the original color of five viscera, as the colors of four seasons and as the colors of diseases. So the changes of feelings are appeared to meridian flow. 4. The method of examining pulse for meridian disorders is applied to Jisan diagram. Jisan diagram is devised from mutual communication of viscera and connection with inside and outside. It is conjugated widely in clinical examination to be distinguished into Dam-Bangkwang, into diseased part of viscera and into meridian. Also it is conjugated recuperation of diseases. 5. The meridian diseases are appeared all the distributed parts of meridian, especially skin, hair, eyebrow, and the ends of the extremities which are sensitive to stimulus. The causes are the disharmony between vital energy and blood and the discordance of six atmospheric variation. The symptoms are skinny aches, itching and eruption, etc. Conclusions : The acupuncture of Hyungsang medicine which utilizes classification of shapes, examining pulse according to Jisan diagram and demonstration of symptoms, is very effective and required systematical study from now on.

  • Purpose: The history of biometry dates back to ancient Greek. The ideal body ratio from biometry is used as a guideline in many works of art. Biometry is also used as a medical standard to determine normal or abnormal. Since the biometry of face is so complicated, many surgeons tend to regard preoperative evaluation as a bother and substitute medical records with some photographs. We introduce a new method to measure $MRD_1$ and levator function using digital photographs, which becomes widely used lately. Methods: $MRD_1$ can be measured with the primary-gaze-view photo which is magnified by PhotoshopR 7.0.1. The distance from coneal reflex of ring flash to upper eyelid margin is converted to mm-unit using the piece of ruler attached on the patient's face. Levator function can be measured with up-gaze-view photo and down-gaze-view photo which are superimposed on another. The excursion distance of upper eyelid margin (a) and the excursion distance of eyebrow (b) are measured respectively. The levator function can be assessed through subtraction of two values (a-b). This method is simple and precise and can be applied directly to patient without photos. Results: Using magnified digital photos and computer, this method can reduce personal error and instrumental error. Taking some digital photos doesn't take long time, so it can reduce the effort of preoperative evaluation and discomfort of patients. Conclusion: Digital photo-biometry is useful for retrospective study. Especially reducing personal error, it is useful when the number of specimens is huge. New levator function test is much more useful for Asian-specific eyes than Berke's method allowing frontalis muscle compensation.
