We propose a novel eye tracking method that can estimate 3D world coordinates using an infrared (IR) stereo camera for indoor and outdoor environments. This method first detects dark evidences such as eyes, eyebrows and mouths by fast multi-level thresholding. Among these evidences, eye pair evidences are detected by evidential reasoning and geometrical rules. For robust accuracy, two classifiers based on multiple layer perceptron (MLP) using gradient local binary patterns (GLBPs) verify whether the detected evidences are real eye pairs or not. Finally, the 3D world coordinates of detected eyes are calculated by region-based stereo matching. Compared with other eye detection methods, the proposed method can detect the eyes of people wearing sunglasses due to the use of the IR spectrum. Especially, when people are in dark environments such as driving at nighttime, driving in an indoor carpark, or passing through a tunnel, human eyes can be robustly detected because we use active IR illuminators. In the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method can detect eye pairs with high performance in real-time under variable illumination conditions. Therefore, the proposed method can contribute to human-computer interactions (HCIs) and intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) applications such as gaze tracking, windshield head-up display and drowsiness detection.

In this paper, we propose the new eye detection method by using adaboost (adaptive boosting) method. Also, to reduce the false alarm rate which identifies the non-eye region as genuine eye that is the Problems of previous method using conventional adaboost, we proposed the post processing methods which used the cornea specular reflection and determined the optimized ratio of eye detecting box. Based on detected eye region by using adaboost, we performed the double circular edge detector for localizing a pupil and an iris region at the same time. Experimental results showed that the accuracy of eye detection was about 98% and the processing time was less than 1 second in mobile device.

This paper examines the implementation of automatic compensation modules for digital camera image when a person is closing his/her eyes. The modules detect the face and eye region and then recognize the eye state. If the image is taken when a person is closing his/her eyes, the function corrects the eye and produces the image by using the most satisfactory image of the eye state among the past frames stored in the buffer. In order to recognize the face and eye precisely, the pre-process of image correction is carried out using SURF algorithm and Homography method. For the detection of face and eye region, Haar-like feature algorithm is used. To decide whether the eye is open or not, similarity comparison method is used along with template matching of the eye region. The modules are tested in various facial environments and confirmed to effectively correct the images containing faces.

In this paper, we propose the eye detection algorithms which can apply to the Real-Time Embedded systems. To detect the eye region, the feature vectors are obtained at the first step and then, PCA(Principal Component Analysis) and amplitude projection method is applied to composite the feature vectors. In the decision state, the estimated probability density functions (PDFs) are applied by the proposed Bayesian method to detect eye region in an image from the CCD camera. The simulation results show that our proposed method has a good detection rate on the frontal face and this can be applied to the embedded system because of its small amount of the mathematical complexity.

Non-intrusive methods based on active remote IR illumination for eye tracking is important for many applications of vision-based man-machine interaction. One problem that has plagued those methods is their sensitivity to lighting condition change. This tends to significantly limit their scope of application. In this paper, we present a new real-time eye detection and tacking methodology that works under variable and realistic lighting conditions. Based on combining the bright-Pupil effect resulted from IR light and the conventional appearance-based object recognition technique, our method can robustly track eyes when the pupils ale not very bright due to significant external illumination interferences. The appearance model is incorporated in both eyes detection and tacking via the use of support vector machine and the mean shift tracking. Additional improvement is achieved from modifying the image acquisition apparatus including the illuminator and the camera.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm for open/closed eye detection based on modified Hausdorff distance. The proposed algorithm consists of two parts, face detection and open/closed eye detection parts. To detect faces in an image, MCT (Modified Census Transform) is employed based on characteristics of the local structure which uses relative pixel values in the area with fixed size. Then, the coordinates of eyes are found and open/closed eyes are detected using MHD (Modified Hausdorff Distance) in the detected face region. Firstly, face detection process creates an MCT image in terms of various face images and extract criteria features by PCA(Principle Component Analysis) on offline. After extraction of criteria features, it detects a face region via the process which compares features newly extracted from the input face image and criteria features by using Euclidean distance. Afterward, the process finds out the coordinates of eyes and detects open/closed eye using template matching based on MHD in each eye region. In performance evaluation, the proposed algorithm achieved 94.04% accuracy in average for open/closed eye detection in terms of test video sequences of gray scale with 30FPS/$320{\times}180$ resolution.

In this study, we design and implement an eye-gaze estimation system based on the extraction of eye contour and pupil region. In order to effectively extract the contour of the eye and region of pupil, the face candidate regions were extracted first. For the detection of face, YCbCr value range for normal Asian face color was defined by the pre-study of the Asian face images. The biggest skin color region was defined as a face candidate region and the eye regions were extracted by applying the contour and color feature analysis method to the upper 50% region of the face candidate region. The detected eye region was divided into three segments and the pupil pixels in each pupil segment were counted. The eye-gaze was determined into one of three directions, that is, left, center, and right, by the number of pupil pixels in three segments. In the experiments using 5,616 images of 20 test subjects, the eye-gaze was estimated with about 91 percent accuracy.

Eye gaze as a form of input was primarily developed for users who are unable to use usual interaction devices such as keyboard and the mouse; however, with the increasing accuracy in eye gaze detection with decreasing cost of development, it tends to be a practical interaction method for able-bodied users in soon future as well. This paper explores a low-cost, robust, rotation and illumination independent eye gaze system for gaze enhanced user interfaces. We introduce two brand-new algorithms for fast and sub-pixel precise pupil center detection and 2D Eye Gaze estimation by means of deformable template matching methodology. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm based on the deformable angular integral search algorithm based on minimum intensity value to localize eyeball (iris outer boundary) in gray scale eye region images. Basically, it finds the center of the pupil in order to use it in our second proposed algorithm which is about 2D eye gaze tracking. First, we detect the eye regions by means of Intel OpenCV AdaBoost Haar cascade classifiers and assign the approximate size of eyeball depending on the eye region size. Secondly, using DAISMI (Deformable Angular Integral Search by Minimum Intensity) algorithm, pupil center is detected. Then, by using the percentage of black pixels over eyeball circle area, we convert the image into binary (Black and white color) for being used in the next part: DTBGE (Deformable Template based 2D Gaze Estimation) algorithm. Finally, using DTBGE algorithm, initial pupil center coordinates are assigned and DTBGE creates new pupil center coordinates and estimates the final gaze directions and eyeball size. We have performed extensive experiments and achieved very encouraging results. Finally, we discuss the effectiveness of the proposed method through several experimental results.
This paper develops a novel technique of face detection using brightness distribution in the surrounding area of eye. The proposed face detection consists of facial component candidate extraction, facial component candidate filtering through eye-lip combination, left/right eye classification using brightness distribution, face verification confirming edges in nose region. Because the proposed technique don't use any skin color, it can detect multiple faces in color images with complicated backgrounds and different illumination levels. The experimental results reveal that the proposed technique is better than the traditional techniques in terms of detection ratio.
In this paper, we describe new method to detect face in real-time. We use color information, edge information, and binary information to detect candidate regions of eyes from input image, and then extract face region using the detected eye pall. We verify both eye candidate regions and face region using Support Vector Machines(SVM). It is possible to perform fast and reliable face detection because we can protect false detection through these verification processes. From the experimental results, we confirmed the proposed algorithm shows very excellent face detection performance.
