  • The study is concerned with the thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis of axisymmetric forward hot extrusion through square dies. The problem is treated as a nonsteady state problem because the distribution of temperature and material properties are continuously changing with the punch travel. In square die extrusion, difficulties arise from the severe distortion and die interference of elements at the aperture rim of the die even with a small punch travel. And finite element computation is impossible without intermittent remeshing. Accordingly, an automatic remeshing technique is proposed by employing specially designed mesh structure near the aperture rim. The analysis of temperature distribution includes heat conduction through material interfaces, heat convection and radiation to the atmosphere and is carried out by decoupling the heat analysis from the analysis of the deformation. The extrusion load and the distributions of strain rate and temperature are computed for the given cases rendering reasonable results. Computed grid distortions are found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. It has been thus shown that the proposed method of analysis can be effectively applied to the axisymmetric hot extrusion through square dies.

  • The effect of exit temperature on the thickness of recrystallization layer during Al extrusion process was investigated. The recrystallization layer of an extruded Al alloy is an important feature of the product in a wide range of applications, particularly those within the automotive industry. The thicker recrystallized layer in the Al alloys can give rise to a number of problems including reduced fatigue resistance and orange peel during cold forming. But the interaction of extrusion process variables with the thickness of recrystallization layer is poorly understood, and there is limited information available regarding the role of the main hot extrusion variables. Using the 3650 US ton extrusion press, this paper describes the effect of the main process variables such as billet temperature, ram speed, and exit temperature on the thickness of recrystallization layer for the A6XXX Al alloy.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of extrusion conditions (moisture content 20% and 30%, screw speed 200 and 250 rpm, barrel temperature $115^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$) on the acidic polysaccharide, ginsenoside contents and antioxidant properties of extruded Korean red ginseng (KRG). Extruded KRGs showed relatively higher amounts of acidic polysaccharide (6.80% to 9.34%) than non-extruded KRG (4.34%). Increased barrel temperature and screw speed significantly increased the content of acidic polysaccharide. The major ginsenosides (Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, Rg2s, Rg3s, Rh1, and Rg3r) of KRG increased through extrusion, while the ginsenoside (Rg1) decreased. The EX8 (moisture 30%, screw speed 250 rpm, and temperature $130^{\circ}C$) had more total phenolics and had a better scavenging effect on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals than those of extruded KRG samples. The extrusion cooking showed a significant increase (6.8% to 20.9%) in reducing power. Increased barrel temperature significantly increased the values of reducing power, the highest value was 1.152 obtained from EX4 (feed moisture 20%, screw speed 250 rpm, and temperature $130^{\circ}C$). These results suggest that extrusion conditions can be optimized to retain the health promoting compounds in KRG products.

  • The main emphasis of this study was to utilize thixoextrusion process for improving extrudability of 7075, 7003 Al wrought alloys and AZ31 Mg wrought alloy. The results of thixbextrusion experiments about microstructures and extrusion pressures were compared with conventional hot extrusion results. The maximum extrusion pressure of thixoextrusion was greatly decreased compared with that of conventional hot extrusion. It was pointed out that the extrusion temperature dependence of the maximum extrusion pressure was large and the influence of extrusion temperature on the improvement of extrudability was remarkable in thixoextrusion. This will contribute to extrudability in terms of extrusion pressure, which in turn means that shorter process time is required and smaller extrusion machine can be applied for the same operation. The elongated grains to extrusion direction were generally observed during conventional hot extrusion, while the thixoextruded microstructures were isotropic.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of extrusion ratio and extrusion temperature on the microstructure and tensile properties of extruded Mg-6Al-0.3Mn-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN6) alloy. As the extrusion ratio and temperature increase, dynamic recrystallization during extrusion is promoted, leading to the formation of a fully recrystallized microstructure with increased grain size. Additionally, the increases in extrusion ratio and temperature lead to texture strengthening, exhibiting a higher maximum texture intensity. The extruded materials contain three types of secondary phases, i.e., Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, with irregular or polygonal shapes. The quantity, size, distribution, and area fraction of the second-phase particles are nearly identical between the two materials. Despite its larger grain size, the tensile yield strength of the material extruded at 450 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 25 (450-25) is higher than that of the material extruded at 325 ℃ and an extrusion ratio of 10 (325-10), which is mainly attributed to the stronger texture hardening effect of the former. The ultimate tensile strength is similar in the two materials, owing to the higher work hardening rate in the 325-10 extrudate. Despite differences in grain size and recrystallization fraction, numerous twins are formed throughout the specimen during tensile deformation in both materials; consequently, the two materials exhibit nearly the same tensile elongation.

  • In order to increase the extrusion production speed of aluminum, extrusion die cooling technology using liquid nitrogen has recently attracted a lot of attention. Increasing the extrusion speed increases the temperature of the bearing area of extrusion dies and the extrusion profile, which may cause defects on the surface of extruded profile. Extrusion die cooling technology is to directly inject liquid nitrogen through a cooling channel formed between the die and the backer inside the die-set. The liquid nitrogen removes heat from the die-set, and gaseous nitrogen at the exit of the channel, covers the extrusion profile of an inert atmosphere reducing the oxidation and the profile temperature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the cooling capacity by applying die cooling to extrusion of Al-Mn-based aluminum alloy flat tubes, and to investigate the effects of die cooling on the change in extrusion characteristics of flat tubes. Cooling capacity was confirmed by observing the temperature change of the extrusion profile depending on whether or not die cooling is applied. To observe changes in material characteristics due to die cooling, surface observation is conducted and microstructure and precipitate analysis are performed by FE-SEM on the surface and longitudinal cross section of the extruded flat tubes.

  • In this study a practical formula based on the experime수 랙 the estimation of load in the non-circular tube extrusion with the mandrel is proposed by using the effective extrusion ratio. Through some experiments for the several shaped sections, the coefficients of the empirical equation are determined by ticine as a model material at room temperature. The proposed empirical formula for the estimation of extrusion load will be applicable to the non-steady state as well as steady state for the extrusion of various shaped tubes from hollow billets.

  • Porthole die extrusion has a great advantage in the forming of hollow section tubes difficult to produce by conventional extrusion with a mandrel on the stem. Because of the complicated structure of die assembly, extrusion process as a forming of hollow section tubes has been investigated experimentally Therefore, analytic approaches that are useful in profitable die design and in the improvement of productivity are inevitably demanded Welding strength is affected by many parameters, which are such as extrusion ratio, extrusion speed, die shape, porthole number, bearing length, billet temperature and mandrel shape. In this paper, the parameters, which are such as billet temperature, bearing length and tube thickness, are examined. The welding pressures are examined through 3D simulation of non steady state and compared with experimental results.

  • This paper presents development of finite element simulation program and analysis of hot extrusion through square dies with a mandrel. The design of extrusion dies is still an art rather than science. Die design for a new extrusion process is developed from through in-plant trials. In the present paper, a three-dimensional steady-state finite element simulation program is developed. Steady-state assumption is used for both the analyses of deformation and temperature. The developed program is effectively used to simulate hollow extrusion of several sections. Distributions of temperature effective strain rate, mean strain rate and mean stress are studied for an effective design of extrusion dies.

  • To produce expanded, minimally hard extrudates from blends of raw pork meat (20%), defatted soy flour (25%), and corn starch using a single-screw extruder, various combinations of feed moisture, process temperature, and screw speed were evaluated. First series of extrusion runs were conducted according to a central composite rotatable design/response surface methodology (RSM). Upon assessing the full model for each response, insignificant terms were eliminated to determine final response surface models. Screw speed within the range evaluated was found to have no significant effect on expansion ratio (ER) or shear force (SF) of extrudates. Since examinations of the response surfaces and their generated grids of predicted values indicated that maximum ER and minimum SF were likely to be attained with a moisture-temperature combination outside the RSM experimental range, the second series of extrusion runs were conducted with several selected combinations of moisture and temperature to determine a practical optimum extrusion condition. The combination of 22.78% feed moisture, 16$0^{\circ}C$ process temperature, and 170 rpm screw speed was chosen as such a condition, and used in the final extrusion. The final product required less force to break than did commercial pretzel sticks.
