Fictitious experiment to control extrusion process was carried out using the fuzzy theory. Algorithm of the fuzzy logic controller(FLC) was made based on the general principles of extrusion. In the simulation, at first, thickness of extrudate was measured as feedback input variable. Secondly, a set point of screw speed was determined as output variable of extruder operating condition through FLC. Finally, the thickness of extrudate was controlled as a given set point. Barrel heater was simply controlled as on/off state, which was not fuzzy controlled.
This study was aimed to develop a gruel using rice extrudates and to evaluate physicochemical properties of Tarakjuk (milk porridge; MP) prepared with milk (M) and rice powder (RP, control), rice extrudate (RE), or enzyme treated rice extrudates (ETR). Pasting property of ETR was significantly different from those of RP or RE with significantly low peak viscosity, breakdown and setback values in the ETR sample. Viscosity of MP prepared with ETR was also significantly low, as compared to that of control (> 900 cP). The total solids and spreadability of MP with ETR was higher than those with RP or RE. Hunter color values varied significantly depending on enzyme treatment levels in ETR samples with enzyme dose-dependent increase in b-value. Average starch digestibility of ETR sample was higher by 10.2% than that of control sample. DPPH radical scavenging activities of ETR samples were greater than those of RE or RP. These results indicated that ETR could be beneficial for preparing easy-drink and diet food with higher starch digestibility and fluidity, especially for gastric tube-fed patients.

In this study, die cooling system using the nitrogen gas has been applied to hot aluminum extrusion process for refining grains and reducing of grain growth. Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) has been carried out to evaluate die cooling effect by nitrogen gas, and the results of CFD have been used to FE-simulation for the prediction of the extrudate temperature in hot extrusion process. Experimental hot extrusion has been performed to observe microstructure and to measure temperature of extrudate. The results of FE-Simulation have been good agreement with those of experiment. Finally, process condition of hot extrusion can be established to reduce grain growth of Al6061 through the experiment.
Direct extrusions of an aluminum 7075 alloy were carried out using 1500 ton machine with and without die cooling system. Cooling of extrusion die has been performed by the flow of liquid nitrogen and controlled by laser thermometer. Billet was 180 mm in diameter and 500 mm in length. The preheating temperatures of billet, container and die were 390℃, 400℃ and 450℃, respectively. Ram speed was kept with 1.25 mm/sec first. The change of ram speed was carried out during extrusion according to the observation of surface defects such as crack or tearing. Extrudates of 8.3 m in length, 100 mm in width and 15 mm in thickness were obtained to observe and analyze surface defects by optical microscopy and EBSD (Electron BackScattered Diffraction). In case of extrusion without die cooling cracks on the surface and tearing in the corner of extrudate occurred in the middle stage and developed in size and frequency during the late stage of extrusion. At the extrusion with die cooling the occurrence of defects could be suppressed on the most part of extrudate. EBSD micrographs showed that cracks and tearings have been resulted from the same origin. Surface defects were generated at the boundaries of grains formed by secondary recrystallization due to surface overheating during extrusion.
Effect of different mixing ratio of non-glutinous and glutinous rice on physical and rheological properties of extrudate prepared in a single screw extruder were examined. The extrusion conditions in term of screw speeds, moisture content and die temperature were 258 rpm, 18% and $120^{\circ}C$, respectively. The resisdence time distribution of the most of materials were within 30 second and small portion of them went up to 80 second. The expansion ratio was the highest value (2.93) for 70% of glutinous rice in the mixture, while the lowest value for 100% of non-glutinous rice. Breaking strength was in the range between 1,051g and 1,117g for $10{\sim}20%$ of glutinous rice in the mixture, while the lowest value (737g) for 80%r of glutinous rice. As the amount of glutinous rice increased, L and a values were increased and b value was decreased. The uncooked cold paste viscosity had 400 B.U. for 100% non-glutinous rice , while no peak for the 100% glutinous rice. As the amount of glutinous rice increased up to 100%, the water absorption index (WAI) was decreased, while water solubility index (WSI) was increased. The rheological properties of extrudate were accounted by the law of Oswald. The flow behavior index of extrudate was less than 1.0, which showed pseudoplastic behavior. Yield stress was the highest value for 20% of glutinous rice in the mixture and the lowest value for $80{\sim}100%$ of glutinous; rice. Number of air cell was between 128 and 159 for $80{\sim}100%$ of glutinous rice in the mixture, while $81{\sim}84%$ for $0{\sim}20%$ of glutinous rice. The degree of shapefact was increased more when the mixtures of glutinous and non-glutinous rice was used than when glutinous or non-glutinous rice was only used.

The aim of this study was to develop pharmaceutical dosage forms with a bi-phasic drug using a double extrusion approach. Hot melt extrusion was performed using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The. 1st melt extrusion was performed using polymer with a relatively higher Tg, such as HPMC and the 2nd melt extrudate was obtained using the 1st extrudate and polymers with a lower Tg, such as HPMC-AS and PEO. In addition, the formulation with all the content in the same proportion as the double extudate was produced using single extrusion for comparison. Physical characterization was performed on the formulations employing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In vitro release tests were studied using a USP Type-I apparatus at $37{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and 100 rpm. The similarity factor (f2) was also used to check the difference statistically. The DSC results indicated that the crystallinity of ibuprofen was changed to an amorphous state after extrusion in both double and single melt extrusion. Double melt extrudate with ibuprofen showed the desired release in acidic media (pH 1.2) in the first two hours and basic (pH 6.8) during six hours. Double melt extrudate with glimepiride showed faster release in 60 min of over 80%, whereas the single extrudate with glimepiride showed retarded release due to the interaction with HPMC. The similarity factor(f2) value was 28.5, which demonstrates that there were different drug release behavior between the double and single extrusion. Consequently, the double melt extrudated formulation was robust and gave the desired drug release pattern.
The processing conditions for the production of meat snack were investigated by using a Bonnot Single-screw extruder Pork and thicken meat were mixed with corn flour in various ratios, respectively, and extruded at different screw speeds(120-260 rpm). As the meat content was increased, the expansion ratio, water absortion index, lightness and yellowness of the extrudate were decreased. The expansion ratio tended to increase with an increase in screw speed, but the opposite relationship was observed with the maximum meat content(meat corn flour=2:1). The maximum water absorption ratio was obtained at the screw speed of 190rpm when the meat content was relatively low, but it moved to 120 rpm as the meat content was increased. The bulk density of the extrudate was significantly increased as the meat content exceeded 50% and no significant differences in bulk density was found at the highter meat content. The redness increased as the moisture content was increased. The maximum breaking strength was attained at the meat-corn flour ratio 1 : 1, and the breaking strength tended to decreased as the screw speed increased.
Sucrose is added to feed materials to alter the taste and texture of extruded products. Emulsifier can affect extrudate properties by forming complexes with amylose during extrusion-cooking. These ingredients may improve the cell structure and texture of cornmeal extrudates obtained by using $CO_{2}$ as a bubble forming agent. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of sucrose (5% and 10%) and glyceryl monostearate (GMS) (0.75% and 1%) on properties of cornmeal extrudates produced with $CO_{2}$ at injection pressures from 1.04 to 2.07 MPa. Dough temperature increased and die pressure decreased when $CO_{2}$ was injected into barrel. The addition of sucrose to cornmeal resulted in decreasing dough temperature, specific mechanical energy (SME) input, and die pressure. SME input was not significantly influenced by GMS addition but die pressure was decreased when GMS was added. Extrudate density was decreased over observed $CO_{2}$ injection compared to GMS. WSI was significantly decreased with the addition of GMS. Paste viscosity was also decreased with addition of sucrose or GMS, but significant differences of paste viscosity among $CO_{2}$ injection pressures were not found. Stucture forming and texture of cornmeal extrudates by $CO_{2}$ injection was improved by adding GMS.
Crystalline structure of the extrudate of high amylose corn starch was studied by X-ray diffractometer and $^{13}C\;NMR$. The X-ray diffraction crystal ratio of the extrudates (barrel temperature $100^{\circ}C$ )of high amylose corn starch slightly increased from 6.08% to 8.37% by increasing feed moisture content from 25% to 45%. But extrudates of high amylose corn starch showed similar crystal ratio on various extrusion conditions. Extrudates of high amylose corn starch (feed moisture content 20%, barrel temp $140^{\circ}C$) showed more enlarged crystal structure than that of non-extrudates. The perpendicular distance of crystal increased by extrusion. Crystal ratio was changed from $6.3{\sim}8.3%$ to $4.5{\sim}5.8%$ during storage at $4^{\circ}C$. Starch configuration was examined with $^{13}C\;NMR$. Double helical content was measured by $^{13}C\;NMR$ method. The highest double helical content (60%) was obtained from high amylose corn starch extrudate (barrel temp.: $100^{\circ}C$, feed moisture content 45%). Double helical contents and resistant starch (RS) yield (pancreatin) were positively correlated. However, double helical content of the extrudates was not changed by the storage at $4^{\circ}C$.

Objectives : Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill contains many nutrients and exhibits high physiological functions. It has been shown that Schisandra seed and pamace contains more nutrients than fruits and thus have higher antioxidant efficacy. In this study, seed and pamace of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill (SPSC) were treated with hot-melt extrudate (HME) extrusion to produce water-soluble nanoparticles. Methods : SPSC was treated with HME to prepare nanoparticles. In this process, excipients (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, pullulan, 2-hydroxylpropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, lecithin) were added to prepare a hydrophilic polymer matrix. To compare and analyze the antioxidant effect and schizandrin content, total flavonoid content, total phenol content and ABTS assay were measured. To confirm the effect of increasing the water solubility of the particles, particle size and water solubility index measurements were performed. The molecular of the material was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Results : The particle size of HME extrudates decreased, while total phenols, flavonoids, schizandrin, antioxidant effect, and solubility increased. Through FT-IR, it was confirmed that the SPSC and the extrudate exhibit the same chemical properties. In addition, it was confirmed that when extracted with water, it exhibited a higher antioxidant effect than the ethanol extract. Conclusions : HME technology increased the solubility of SPSC, which are processing by-products, and improved their antioxidant effect to a higher degree. It was confirmed that SPSC could be used as an eco-friendly, high value-added material.
