On Numerical Computation of Pickands Constants

  • Pickands constant $H_{\alpha}$ appears in the classical result about tail probabilities of the extremes of Gaussian processes and there exist several different representations of Pickands constant. However, the exact value of $H_{\alpha}$ is unknown except for two special Gaussian processes. Significant effort has been made to find numerical approximations of $H_{\alpha}$. In this paper, we attempt to compute numerically $H_{\alpha}$ based on its representation derived by $H{\ddot{u}}sler$ (1999) and Albin and Choi (2010). Our estimates are compared with the often quoted conjecture $H_{\alpha}=1/{\Gamma}(1/{\alpha})$ for 0 < ${\alpha}$ ${\leq}$ 2. This conjecture does not seem compatible with our simulation result for 1 < ${\alpha}$ < 2, which is also recently observed by Dieker and Yakir (2014) who devised a reliable algorithm to estimate these constants along with a detailed error analysis.

  • Hourly ozone data are available for 73 stations in South Korea from January, 1988 to August, 1998. We are interested in detecting trends in both the mean levels and the extremes of ozone, and in determining how these trends vary over the country. The latter aspect means that we also have to understand the spatial dependence of ozone. In this connection, therefore, we examine in this paper the following features: determining trends in mean ozone levels at individual stations and combination across stations; determining trends in extreme ozone levels at individual stations and combination across stations; spatial modeling of trends in mean and extreme ozone levels.

  • This paper presents a novel method for searching stable solution using DNA coding scheme. Often there are more than one solutions that satisfy the system requirements. These solutions can be viewed as extremes in multimodal function. All extremes are not the same in that some of them are using sensitive to noise or perturbation. This paper address the method that selects a solution that meets the system requirements in terms of output performance and is tolerant to the perspective noise or perturbation. A new method, called a Gradient DNA coding is proposed to achieve such objectives several numerical examples and presented and comparing DNA coding with genetic algorithm is also given.

  • Most designers of equipment, or of a workplace layout, frequently choose 5 percentile female and 95 percentile male dimensions as design limits. If the design is not an one-dimensional problem, it is difficult to choose '5 percentile female' or '95 percentile male'. Hence it is important to consider the interactions or relationships between body dimensions. This paper deals with correlation analysis, factor analysis and partial correlation analysis using data above age 20 from the national anthropometric survey in Korea, 1986. Besides, a model which represent the extremes of body size of Korean has been developed in this paper.

A Study on the Characteristics of Women's Costumes in the Ends of Centuries (근세이후 여성복식에 나타난 세기말 현상에 관한 연구)

  • In a turn a century, the skepticism, mysticism and eroticism used to prevail, the people becoming anxious, expectative and doubtful about an oncoming age. The costumes tend to become more exciting and erotic in the fashion. This thesis is on understanding “What would 21 century's clothes be\ulcorner” after analyzing the specific points in an end of the century. The characteristics found from 16th century to 20th century are going to the extremes in the shapes, consistent appearance of bustle style costumes and excessive ornaments which are closely interrelated with one another. I expect the fashion in 21st century would be changed in two ways. Firstly, going to the extremes and stressing on the buttock would be going down in the end of 1999. Secondly, the comfortable clothes highest in function and technology, and also friendly to the environment, might be the main stream, rather then outwardly good looking clothes, because spirit and environment is much more emphasized than the mode by the social impact or pressure in the next era. Probability of exceeding the serviceability limit of antenna masts

  • With respect to serviceability, antenna masts should be designed so that wind-induced motion will not cause unacceptable lack of transmission for broadcasting users and wireless communication. For such antenna masts with directional radio transmission the serviceability limit state is predominantly governed by the tolerable change of the broadcasting angle of the mounted antenna assembly and therefore by the tip distortion of the mast. In this paper it will be shown that refinements of the present state of design of antenna masts are possible by using the statistics of extremes applied to extreme wind situations and by consideration of the statistical and reliability requirements given by the operator such as frequency and return period of passing the serviceability limit.

  • The natural hydrologic regime is intimately tied to the structure and function of stream and riparian ecosystems. Consequently, understanding the nature and extent of perturbations to the hydrologic regime, stemming from episodic-to-seasonal and longer-term climatic variations, as well as anthropogenic influences is an important starting point for developing an improved understanding of the coupled human-environmental systems. Herein, we pursued to explicate sensitivity of ecologically relevant flow metrics to climate variability and extremes in the five major river basins, Korea.

  • The patterns of occurrence of typhoons in North Pacific region are constantly changing with the increase of temperature in sea surface and the occurrence of El Nino and La Nina and changes of their development caused by global warming. In addition, alterations of flow regimes caused by large-scale hydraulic construction projects in the past few years and changes in precipitation patterns caused by climate change have imposed increased stress on hydroecology while the indiscreet utilization of water resources has a negative environmental impact on the water flows in the natural rivers and streams and hydroecological structures. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of altered hydrologic regime on stream and riparian ecosystems that are most vulnerable to climate variability and extremes such as typhoons.

Investigating Changes over Time of Precipitation Indicators (강수지표의 시간에 따른 변화 조사)

  • Gradually or radically change how the characteristics of the climate characteristic using change point analysis for the precipitation indicators were investigated. Significantly the amount, extreme and frequency were separated by precipitation indicators, each indicator RIA(Rainfall Index for Amount), RIE(Rainfall Index for Extremes) and RIF(Rainfall Index for Frequency) was defined. Bayesian Change Point was applied to investigate changing over time of precipitation indicators calculated. As the result of analysis, precipitation indicators in South Korea was found to recently increase all indicators except for the annual precipitation days and 200-yr precipitation. RIA revealed that there was a very clear point of significance for the change in Ulleungdo, Relatively significant results for RIE were identified in Gumi, Jecheon and Seogwipo. Also, since the 1990s, an increase in the number of variation points, and the horizontal width of the fluctuation point was being relatively wider. Based on these results, rethink the precipitation on the assumption of stationarity was judged necessary.

Atmospheric Circulation of Pacific-Japan (PJ) and Typhoon-induced Extremes in the Nakdong River Basin (PJ 대기패턴과 태풍에 의한 낙동강 유역의 수문학적 극치 사상의 지역적 특성 변화 분석)

  • The East Asia (EA) region including China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea are especially vulnerable to hydrometerological extremes during the boreal summer (June-September). Therefore, this study pursued an exploratory analysis to improve better understanding of the potential impacts of the PJ pattern on WNP Tropical cyclone (TC) activity and TC-affected extremes based on the Korean Nakdong River Basin. The results show that during the positive PJ years, the large-scale atmospheric environments tend more favorable for the TC activity than those in the negative PJ years. KP-influenced TCs during the positive (negative) PJ years are likely to occur more southwestward (northeastward), recurve at more northwestward (northeastward) locations, and indicate increase (decrease) in frequency over Korea and Japan. Consequently, TCs making landfall are more exhibited over the southeastern portions of South Korea during the positive PJ years.
