Structural Design and Proof Test of a 2MW Wind Trubine Blade (2MW 로터 블레이드 구조설계 및 인증시험)

  • A GFRP based composite blade was developed for a 2MW wind energy conversion system of type class IIA. The blade sectional geometry was designed to have a general shell-spar and shear web structure. The load cases specified in the IEC61400-1 international specification were considered. For withstanding all relevant extreme loads, the structural analysis for the complete blade was performed using a commercial FEM code. The static load carrying capacity, blade tip deflection and natural frequencies were evaluated to satisfy the strength and stability requirements in accordance with the IEC61400-1 and GL Regulations. The prototype blade was passed the structural proof test for GL certification.

  • With the improvement of computer power and technology, fracture modelling by finite element methods has become a topic of extensive studies. However, fracture simulation much limited to an academic study of crack propagation with a fine mesh. Element deletion method is a useful tool for estimating damage due to accidental or extreme loads on structures, provided that an effective and realistic criterion is established for simulating the material failure and subsequent element deletion. In this study, ABAQUS/Explicit is used to simulate the material failure on the basis of experimental results by X. Huang et al. Through numerical experiments, we suggest a formulation to determine the failure strain associated with the size and thickness of removed elements.

  • Extreme loads such as impact and explosion have higher strain rate than static loading condition. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate mechanical properties at high strain rate in order to apply fiber reinforced cement composites to ensure safety performance against impact and explosion. In this study, the compressive properties of fiber reinforced cement composites by strain rate were evaluated.

The Pharmacology of Actoprotectors: Practical Application for Improvement of Mental and Physical Performance

  • Actoprotectors are preparations that enhance body stability against physical loads without increasing oxygen consumption or heat production. Or, in short, actoprotectors are synthetic adaptogens with a significant capacity to improve physical performance. This paper explores the history of actoprotectors' development, their pharmacological properties, mechanism of action, and practical application to the improvement of mental and physical performance. A brief summary of the clinico-pharmacological characteristics of the main representatives of this class (bemitil and bromantane) is provided. Some other synthesized compounds, and even natural ones such as ginseng, also are regarded as potential actoprotectors, and these are treated herein as well. Actoprotectors, owing to their wide-ranging pharmacological activities, high efficiency and safety, can be applied under either normal or extreme conditions.

  • Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutment can cause extreme deformations on track. Especially, since slab track was fixed onto the bridge deck slab on concrete slab track installed bridges, deformations of bridge deck ends directly affect the slab track behavior, and thus these interactions can bring about the premature failure of rail fastenings or other deteriorations to lower the serviceability. In this study, a foreign standard to evaluate forces on track components caused by the track-bridge interactions and the behavior of bridge deck ends was investigated and for real scale bridges. It was found that rail support spring coefficients, as well as toe loads, support spacing were very important parameters.

  • The reduction of the dynamic response of an offshore structure subjected to wind-generated random ocean waves is of extreme significance in the aspects of serviceability, fatigue life and safety of the structure. In this study, a new neuro-control scheme is applied to the vibration control of a fixed offshore platform under random wave loads to examine the applicability of the proposed method. It is called the Lattice Probabilistic Neural Network (LPNN), as it utilizes lattice pattern of state vectors as the training data of PNN. When control results of the LPNN are compared with those of the NN and PNN, LPNN showed better performance in effectively suppressing the structural responses in a shorter computational time.

  • This study analyzed automobile lower arm assembly structure and fatigue to identify configuration changes to enhance structural safety. Parts connected to the car body were fixed and 500 N load was applied at the lower arm head. Maximum equivalent stress and maximum total deformation were minimized for model 1 ( MPa and 0.10315 mm, respectively). Fatigue analysis using extreme SAE bracket history fatigue loads showed model 1 also improved fatigue life ($3.3693{\times}10^5cycles$). This study provides important inputs to improve lower arm durability by modifying the arm configuration.

  • In recent years, the effects of a possible climate change have been discussed in regard to wind loading on buildings and structures. Simple scenarios based on the assumption of global warming suggest an increase of storm intensities and storm frequencies and a possible re-distribution of storm tracks. Among recent publications, some papers seem to verify these scenarios while others deny the influence of climatic change. In an introductory step, the paper tries to re-examine these statements. Based on meteorological observations of a weather station in Germany, the existence of long-term trends and their statistical significance is investigated. The analysis itself is based on a refined model for the wind climate introducing a number of new basic variables. Thus, the numerical values of the design wind loads used in modern codes become more justified from the probabilistic point of view.
