Traditional simultaneous distillation extraction(SDE) and solid-phase micro extraction(SPME) methods using GC/MS were compared for their effectiveness in the extraction of volatile flavor compounds from different tobacco leaves types(flue-cured, burley, oriental). The major volatile flavor compounds of flue-cured and burley tobacco were similar such as neophytadiene, solanone, megastigmatrienone isomers, ${\beta}$-damascenone and ${\beta}$-ionone. On the other hand, volatile flavor compounds such as norambreinolide, sclareolide were specifically identified in oriental tobacco. Each method was used to evaluate the responses of some analytes from real samples and standards in order to provide sensitivity comparisons between two techniques. Among three types of SPME fibers such as PDMS(Polydimethylsiloxane), PA(Polyacrylate) and PDMS/DVB (Polydimethylsiloxane/Divinylbenzene) which were investigated to determine the selectivity and adsorption efficiency, PDMS/DVB fiber was selected for the extractions of the volatile flavor compounds due to its effectiveness. The qualitative analysis showed that the total amount of volatile flavor compounds in SDE method(130 species) was much more than that in SPME method(85 species). SPME method was more efficient for all the highly volatile compounds than SDE method, but on the other hand, low-volatile compounds such as fatty acids or high-molecular hydrocabons were detected in SDE method. SPME method based on a short-time sampling can be adjusted to favor a selected group compounds in tobacco. Furthermore this results could be used to estimate the aroma characteristics of cigarette blending by using a different type of tobacco with more effectiveness and convenience.
Corticosterone is known as a biological stress index in many species including birds. Feather corticosterone concentration (FCC) has increasingly been used as a measure for chronic stress status in broiler chickens. As sample preparation is the first step of analytical process, different techniques of feather matrix disruption need to be validated for obtaining better result in analysing corticosterone extraction. The current study was a validation of pulverizing the feather by bead beater (BB) and surgical scissors (SS) processing prior to corticosterone extraction in feather of broiler chickens. The type of feather processing prior to the hormone extraction may alter the final output. Thereby, finding a standard method according to laboratory facilities is pivotal. This study carried out to determine the effects of feather pulverization methods on the extraction amount of corticosterone in broiler chickens. Feathers were sampled from four weeks old Ross 308 broiler chickens (n = 12 birds). All broiler chickens were kept under the same environmental condition and had access to feed and water. Feather samples were assigned to one of the following processing methods 1) using a BB for pulverizing and 2) using a SS for chopping into tiny pieces. Each sample was duplicated into two wells during enzyme immunoassay (EIA) analysis to improve the accuracy of the obtained data. The results showed lower standard errors and constant output of FCC by using the BB method compared with the SS method. Overall comparison of FCC showed a significantly higher (p < 0.001) amount of the FCC in the BB compared with the SS. Overall, using the BB method is recommended over the SS method for feather processing due to the ability to homogenize a large number of samples simultaneously, ease of use and greater extraction of feather corticosterone.

Additive noise and channel distortion strongly degrade the performance of speaker verification systems, as it introduces distortion of the features of speech. This distortion causes a mismatch between the training and recognition conditions such that acoustic models trained with clean speech do not model noisy and channel distorted speech accurately. This paper presents a phase-related feature extraction method in order to improve the robustness of the speaker verification systems. The instantaneous frequency is computed from the phase of speech signals and features from the histogram of the instantaneous frequency are obtained. Experimental results show that the proposed technique offers significant improvements over the standard techniques in both clean and adverse testing environments.

Image stitching techniques produce an image with a wide field-of-view by aligning multiple images with a narrow field-of-view. While conventional algorithms successfully stitch images with a small parallax, structure misalignment may occur when input images contain a large parallax. This paper presents an image stitching algorithm that aligns images with a large parallax by regional linear warping. To this end, input images are first approximated as multiple planar surfaces, and different linear warping is applied to each planar surface. For approximating input images as multiple planar surfaces, the concept of dominant edges is introduced. Dominant edges are defined as conspicuous edges of lines in input images, and extracted dominant edges identify the boundaries of each planar surface. Dominant edge extraction is conducted by detecting distinct changes of local characteristics around strong edge pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm successfully stitches images with a large parallax without structure misalignment.
The aroma component of Hallabong peel has been characterized by GC-MS with two different extraction techniques: solid-phase trapping solvent extraction (SPTE) and headspace solid-phase microextraction (HSSPME). Aroma components emitted from Hallabong peel were compared with those of other citrus varieties: lemon, orange and grapefruit by SPTE and GC-MS. d-Limonene (96.98%) in Hallabong was the main component, and relatively higher peaks of cis- ${\beta}$-ocimene, valencene and -farnesene were observed. Other volatile aromas, such as sabinene, isothujol and ${\delta}$-elemene were observed as small peaks. Also, principal components analysis was employed to distinguish citrus aromas based on their chromatographic data. For HSSPME, the fiber efficiency was evaluated by comparing the partition coefficient ($K_{gs}$Kgs) between the HS gaseous phase and HS-SPME fiber coating, and the relative concentration factors (CF) of the five characteristic compounds of the four citrus varieties. 50/30 ${\mu}$m DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber was verified as the best choice among the four fibers evaluated for all the samples.
The influences of various operating parameters on physico-chemical techniques were evaluated to remediate petroleum-contaminated sandy soil including S/L ratio, kinetic, and effect of soil particle size. The simple extraction using tap water removed only 20.6% of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), and addition of NaOH enhanced the removal of TPH to approximately 30%. To meet the regulation levels, a surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, was added, and the removal of TPH increased to 4 times. Probably, the carbonate minerals affected chemical aging and soprtion of petroleum, which inhibited the extraction of TPH. The soil with smaller particle size contained more TPH, and the removal of TPH was obstructed with smaller particle size. However, NaOH addition increased the removal of TPH in the smaller particles. The physico-chemical properties of soil influenced greatly the removal of petroleum even in sandy soil.
Various separation techniques of antimicrobial compounds from food materials have proven to be ineffective, involving liquid-liquid extraction and chromatography. We established efficient separation procedure for partially purifying antimicrobial compounds from Korean leek. Separation procedures consisted of ultrafiltration, liquid-liquid extraction, TLC and HPLC. Molecular weight of antimicrobial compounds were less than 5,000 dalton. Major compounds were propenyl methyl disulfide, S-methyl methylthiosulphonate and dimethyl disulfide.

This paper proposes a new stroke extraction algorithm for phoneme segmentation, which is one of main techniques for off-line handwritten Hangul recognition. The proposed algorithm extracts vertical, slant, and horizontal strokes from phonemes using run-length. The run-length of vertical or slant strokes becomes the width, and also the number of horizontal run-lengths the width. After extracting horizontal strokes from phonemes, the algorithm links two continuous vertical or slant stokes with run-lengths of the strokes' width to represent the features of a character. The extracted strokes can be utilized to recognize a character, using template matching of strokes, which is being adopted in on-line handwritten Hangul recognition.
Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP/AES) was used for the determination of uranium and thorium in geological materials. Samples were predecomposed by mixed acid digestion technique. The separation of the uranium and thorium was achieved by systematic solvent extraction with TTA(thenoyltrifluoroacetone) and TOA (tri-n-octylamine) and back extraction into HCl. The results for standard rock sample, NIST SRM 278, showed a good agreement with those certified from NIST as well as found values by other non-destructive techniques. Additional purification for extracted portions was carried out by anion exchange chromatography for measurement of several natural radioisotopes of uranium and thorium by alpha spectrometry.
Prediction of corporate failure using past financial data is well-documented topic. Early studies of bankruptcy prediction used statistical techniques such as multiple discriminant analysis, logit and probit. Recently, however, numerous studies have demonstrated that artificial intelligence such as neural networks (NNs) can be an alternative methodology for classification problems to which traditional statistical methods have long been applied. Although numerous theoretical and experimental studies reported the usefulness or neural networks in classification studies, there exists a major drawback in building and using the model. That is, the user can not readily comprehend the final rules that the neural network models acquire. We propose a genetic algorithms (GAs) approach in this study and illustrate how GAs can be applied to corporate failure prediction modeling. An advantage of GAs approach offers is that it is capable of extracting rules that are easy to understand for users like expert systems. The preliminary results show that rule extraction approach using GAs for bankruptcy prediction modeling is promising.
