  • The present experimental study proposed two ionic liquids (ILs) namely [Aliquat 336] [$HSO_4$] (prepared and characterized at our laboratory) and Cyphos 101 IL (supplied by Cytec Company) dissolved in two different diluents such as DCM (di-chloro-methane) and toluene applied for PMs extraction. The first IL [Aliquat 336] [$HSO_4$] prepared and confirmed the formation of final product by using FT-IR and TGA studies. The primary experiment in solvent extraction processing is kinetic effect; 0 to 30 time varied for PMs by using two ILs and confirmed the optimized extraction equilibrium time. This study was conducted for PMs (Pt, Rh and Cu) extraction and separation from each other by using proposed ILs. This is the primary study of the utilizing green solvents such as ILs as an extractant system for Pt, Rh and Cu extraction and possible separation.

  • Solvent extraction of pentachlorophenol (PCP) from wood chips of the PCP-treated ammunition box has been studied using methanol, ethanol and acetonitrile. Experimental variables were chosen as the composition of solvents, the ratio of solvent per dried wood, size of the substance, extraction temperature and sonication applied to the samples. The average concentration of PCP was 720 ppm and methanol was the most effective for PCP extraction. Above 99% of PCP were removed from the sample (initial concentration of PCP; 1297 ppm) within 2 h at room temperature by methanol. The minimal ratio of methanol per dried wood chip(v/w) was 10. Type of substances(chip or sawdust), extraction temperature and sonication showed little effects on PCP extraction.

  • Equilibria and applications of a synergistic extraction were studied for the determination of a trace lithium by using thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) and trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as ligands. Several equations were derived for the extraction of lithium into m-xylene as a phase of Li-TTA·mTOPO adduct. Distribution coefficients and extraction constant were determined together with a stability constant of the adduct. The adduct was quantitatively extracted from the basic solution of higher than pH 9 by shaking for 30 minutes. m-Xylene was selected as an optimum solvent by comparing the extraction efficiency among several kinds of organic solvents. The stability constant (${\Beta}_2$) for Li-TTA/2TOPO was 150 times higher than Li-TTA/TOPO. The distribution coefficient of Li-TTA/2TOPO into m-xylene was 9.12 and the logarithmic extraction constant (log $K_{ex}$) was 6.76. Trace lithium of sub-ppm level in seawater samples could be determined under modified conditions and a detection limit equivalent to 3 times standard deviation for background absorption was 0.42 ng/mL.

  • In this work, caffeine and some catechin compounds + C, EC, EGC, and EGCG were extracted from green tea by using molecular imprinted polymers (MIP) as sorbent materials in a solid-phase extraction (SPE) process known as MISPE (molecular imprinted solid-phase extraction). For synthesis of MIP, caffeine was employed as the template, MAA as the monomer, EGDMA as the crosslinker, and AIBN as the initiator. A solution of caffeine (0.2 mg/mL in methanol) was utilized in the solid extraction cartridges following loading, washing, and elution procedures with acetonitrile, methanol, and methanol-acetic acid (90/10, %v/v) as the solvents, respectively. This solid-phase extraction protocol was applied for the extraction of caffeine and some catechin compounds from green tea. A comparison was made between the results obtained with the MIP cartridges and a traditional C18 reversed-phase cartridge. It was thereupon found that the recovery of caffeine by the MIPbased sorbent used in this work was almost two and four times greater than that by a commercially available C18 material. A quantitative analysis was conducted by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a C18 column (5 μm, 250 × 4.6 mm) with methanol/water (40/60, %v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min.

  • Silkworm (Bombyx mori ) feces have long been used in the pharmaceutical and food industries as a natural colorant. However, there is limited data on the bioactive compounds that constitute silkworm feces. This research emphasizes the antioxidant activity of different solvent and flavonoid extracts of silkworm feces. The solvents were ethanol, butanol, and water, while the methods utilized included ultrasonification, stirrer, reflux, and reflux after ultrasonification extraction. Results showed that butanol ultrasonification extraction (BUE) yield the lowest extraction (1.75%), while the other methods yielded 7 to 14%. The total polyphenol content utilizing BUE was 3.3 mg TAE/g, while water ultrasonification extraction (WUE) yielded the highest extraction rate with 51.6 mg TAE/g. The total flavonoid content was significantly higher using ethanol reflux extraction (EUE) at 266.8 mg QRE/g BUE, which was 158.3 and 151.3 mg QRE/g. Both DPPH radical scavenging activity and SOD-like (superoxide dismutase) activity, showed significant antioxidant effects. Finally, all other extracts except for BUE had a-glucosidase inhibition at 60%. Therefore, an effective extraction method for physiologically active substances must be selected.

  • Consumption of fruits and vegetables has been conducted to be effective in the prevention of chronic diseases. In this study, 70% methanol, 70% ethanol and chloroform-methanol mixture (CM, 2:1, v/v) were used as solvents in the extraction of apple peels. The total phenol content, total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity of various extracts were investigated using in vitro assays. The extract obtained by 70% methanol showed the highest total phenol content ($20.87{\pm}0.17mgCAE/g$), ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt] radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power. However, 70% ethanol extract possessed the strongest antioxidant activity assayed by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity and ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching method. And CM extract was found to show the highest total flavonoid content with the value of $9.26{\pm}0.06mgQE/g$. These results indicated that apple peels can be used in dietary applications with a potential to reduce oxidative stress.

  • Perstractive fermentation is a good way to increase the productivity of bioreactors. Us-ing Propionibacteria as the model system, the feasibility of using supported emulsion liquid mem-brane(SELM) fro perstractive fermentation is assessed in this study. Five industrial solvents were considered as the solvent for perparing the SELM. The more polar a solvent, is the higher the par-tition coefficeint However, toxicity of a solvent also increases with its polarity. CO-1055(indus-trial decanol/octanol blend)has the highest partition coefficient toward propionic acid among the solvents that has no molecular toxicity toward Propionibacteria, A preliminary extraction study was conducted using tetradecane as solvent in a hydrophobic hollow fiber contactor. The results confirmed that SELM eliminates the equilibrium limitation of conventional liquid-liquid extrac-tion and allows the use of a non-toxic solvent with low partition coefficient.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a new method to separate phosvitin from egg yolk without using organic solvents. Phosvitin was extracted from yolk granules using 10% NaCl or 10% $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ (final concentration) and then treated with heat to precipitate the lipoproteins from the extracted solution. The optimal pH for the phosvitin extraction from yolk granules was determined, and the iron-binding ability of the extracted phosvitin (final product) was tested. Adding 10% $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ disrupted the granules, and the subsequent thermal treatment at $90^{\circ}C$ for 1 h precipitated low density and high density lipoproteins, which enabled separation of phosvitin by centrifugation. The phosvitin concentration in the extract was significantly higher when the pH of the solution was adjusted to pH ${\geq}9$. The purity and recovery rate of phosvitin at the end of the separation process were approximately 78% and 56%, respectively. The separated phosvitin was confirmed to have ferrous and ferric iron binding ability. The advantages of this new method compared with the traditional methods include no organic solvents and high-priced equipment are needed for the separation. Also, this method is more environment and consumer friendly than that of the traditional methods.

  • To compare the cleaning effect of solvents such as water and ethanol used to clean lacquer relics, the components extracted with various solvents were analyzed. A freshly dried lacquer sample and a lacquer sample exposed to ultraviolet radiation for 24 days were treated with water, ethanol, acetone, and hexane, and the dissolved material was detected by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The amount extracted was significantly higher in acetone and ethanol than in hexane, a nonpolar solvent. Water, a highly polar solvent, was relatively efficient for extracting low-molecular-weight materials. After experiencing 24 days of ultraviolet radiation, the lacquer exhibited a significant increase of extracted materials compared with the nonexposed one. This may be due to the degradation of the urushiol chain in the form of polymers, resulting in the formation of low-molecular-weight polar substances, including dicarboxylic acids. In addition to the deterioration status of lacquer relics, such solvent extraction properties will be a crucial consideration in selecting the appropriate cleaning solvent.
