  • In solvent extraction, extraction isotherm represents the relation between the equilibrium concentration of metal in the aqueous and organic phase. McCabe-Thiele diagram on which extraction isotherm and operating line are constructed provides valuable information on the mass transfer operation. When the equilibrium constant of a solvent extraction reaction is known, the calculation method to obtain extraction isotherm was introduced. Kresmer equation by which the number of extraction stages can be calculated when the distribution coefficient is constant was introduced.

  • Distribution diagram of $CoCl_2$ and $MnCl_2$ was obtained by analyzing ionic equilibria of the two metals in HCl solution. In the HCl concentration range of 4 and 10 M, most of cobalt exists as $CoCl_2$, whereas Mn exists $MnCl_{3}^-$ and $MnCl_2$. Extraction isotherm of Co(II) and Mn(II) was calculated by using the equilibrium constant for the solvent extraction of the two metals by Alamine336. Although the equilibrium constant for the solvent extraction of Mn was higher than that of Co, extraction isotherm indicated that cobalt could be extracted more efficiently than manganese at the same initial extraction conditions.

  • This study was to investigate the extraction characteristics of extraction resins containing HEH/EHP for Gadolinium solution. The experiments were carried out with the variation of equilibrium pH and initial concentration of Gd. The optimum extraction time was 90 mins on Gd extraction using resin. The extraction ratio(%) was increased by increasing equilibrium pH from pH 1.0 to 2.0. The experimentally measured amounts of Gd on resins at equilibrium agreed well with those predicted using Freundlich's isotherm.

  • Despite the importance of chloride binding, it is very difficult to measure the binding capacity, in particular, for the concrete body in an existing structure: in fact, the measurement procedure for chloride binding is much influenced by the environmental condition such as temperature, fineness of sample and pore water extraction techniques. The present study concerns the quantification of the binding capacity of chloride ions in concrete using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Once the binding isotherm of chlorides was determined by the Langmuir isotherm, as a function of the W/C, curing age and binder type, the generation of bound chlorides (i.e. Friedel's salt) was simultaneously ensured by the XRD technique. The amount of bound chloride was then determined by analyzing the peak intensity for the bound chlorides in the XRD curve. It was found that an increase in the curing age and a decrease in the W/C resulted in an increase in the binding capacity.

  • The goal of this research is to compare the metal binding characteristics of an anoxic selector activated sludge system and a conventional activated sludge system. Metal biosorption by biomass harvested from experimental systems was determined by a series of batch experiments. Heavy metals studied in this research were zinc, cadmium, and nickel. The sorption isotherm showed that the selector sludge had significantly higher sorption capacity than did the control sludge. Metal biosorption behavior closely followed a Freundlich isotherm model for equilibrium concentrations. ECP contents of biomass estimated by alkali extraction technique showed that ECP levels in the selector sludge significantly higher than that in the sludge harvested from the conventional system, indicating that the higher metal sorption capacity of selector sludge may be due to the selection of the ECP-producing bacteria (i.e., Zoogloea sp.) by the selector system.

  • α-mangostin imprinted polymers have been synthesized by a non-covalent imprinting approach with α-mangostin as a template molecule. The α-mangostin molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) prepared by radical polymerization using methacrylic acid, ethlylene glycol dimethacrylate, benzoyl peroxide, and acetonitrile, as a monomer, crosslinker, initiator, and porogen, respectively. The template was removed by using methanol:acetic acid 90:10 (v/v). The physical characteristics of the polymers were investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The rebinding studies were carried out by batch methods. The results exhibited that the MIPs was able to adsorb the α-mangostin at pH 2 and the contact time of 180 min. The kinetic adsorption data of α-mangostin performed the pseudo-second order model and followed the Langmuir isotherm model with the adsorption capacity of 16.19 mg·g-1. MIPs applied as a sorbent material in solid-phase extraction, namely molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) and it shows the ability for enrichment and clean-up of α-mangostin from the complex matrix in medicinal herbal product and crude extract of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) pericarp. Both samples, respectively, which were spiked with α-mangostin gives recovery more than 90% after through by MISPE in all concentration ranges.

  • Solvent extraction behaviors of iron(III) from chloride solution at high ionic strength condition between Alamine336 and TBP were compared by using MaCabe-Thiele diagram. Extraction isotherms of iron by the two extractants were obtained by calculating the equilibrium concentrations of iron in both phases from the initial extraction conditions. In calculating the equilibrium concentration of iron, chemical equilibria in the aqueous phase and mass balance together with the solvent extraction reaction were considered. MaCabe-Thiele diagram of iron by 1M Alamine336 indicated that two extraction stages could lead to complete extraction of 0.5M iron from 3M HCl solution at an A/O ratio of 6/5. The extraction power of 1M Alamine336 was found to be the same as 2-3M TBP. MaCabe-Thiele diagram together with the physical properties of the two extractants indicated that Alamine336 is superior to TBP in extracting ferric iron from chloride solution.

  • Subsurface temperature is affected by heat advection due to groundwater advection. Temperature-depth profile can be perturbed especially when there are significant vertical groundwater flux caused by external force such as injection or extraction. This research is to clarify the change of subsurface temperature distribution when the 40m x l0m sandy aquifer is stimulated by two different vertical flux($case1:\;{\pm}10^{-5}m^3/s,\;case2:\;{\pm}4{\times}10^{-5}m^3/s$) using a program called HydroGeoSphere. The resulting temperature distribution contour map shows pumping causes vertical attraction of water from deeper and warmer place which result in rising up isotherm. Additionally more injection/extraction rate, more vertical groundwater flux leads to faster Increase in temperature near the pumping well.

  • The characteristics of phosphate desorption on kaolinite was studied by batch adsorptiondesorption experiments. Desorption procedure was carried out through sequential extraction method at pH 4. The phosphorous contents were measured using UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometer with 820 nm wavelength. The adsorption-desorption reaction of P on kaolinite was irreversible, and most of adsorbed P on kaolinite were not easily dissolved to aqueous solution, but may might be fixed on kaolinite surface. The desorption isotherms were well fitted with the Freundlich and Temkin equations in the case of short reaction and long reaction time, respectively. The desorption reaction was divided into the early fast reaction and the later slow reaction. The percentage of desorption generally decreased with increasing adsorbed P concentration and increasing desorption reaction time.

  • This study was conducted to establish the adsorption-desorption mechanism and the optimum condition of chromatographic operation for separations of heavy rare earth elements (Gd, Tb, Dy) using a p507-containing resin. By employing Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm together with pseudo first and second order kinetics, absorption-desorption reaction mechanism was investigated. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm was applied under assumption that adsorption reaction occurs in form of monolayer, and because the result was identical to the assumption, now we know adsorption of heavy rare earth elements occurs in form of monolayer. Concerning the pseudo first and second order kinetic, the pseudo second order seemed to be more suitable to represent heavy rare earth element adsorption mechanism. By using the extraction chromatography to separate heavy rare earth elements, ${\alpha}^{Tb}_{Gd}=1.24$, and ${\alpha}^{Dy}_{Tb}=1.03$ were confirmed in eluent HCl 0.25 M which indicates almost perfect separations of three elements. Furthermore, as concentrations of eluent became higher, the resolution value decreased and the elution area got shortened.
