  • Topographic maps can be made and updated with satellite images, but it requires many human interactions that are inefficient and costly. Therefore, the automatizing of the road extraction procedures could increase efficiency in terms of time and cost. Although methods of extracting roads, railroads and rivers from satellite images have been developed in many studies, studies on the road extraction from satellite images of urbanized area are still not relevant, because many artificial components In the city makes the delineation of the roads difficult. So, to extract roads from high resolution satellite images of urbanized area, this study has proposed the combined use of wavelet transform and multi-resolution analysis. In consequence, this study verifies that it is possible to automatize the road extraction from satellite images of urbanized area. And to realize the automatization more completely, various algorithms need to be developed.

  • The QR method is one of the most common methods for calculating the eigenvalues of a square matrix, however its understanding would require complicated and sophisticated mathematical logics. In this article, we present a simple way to understand QR method only with a minimal mathematical knowledge. A deflation technique is introduced, and its combination with the power iteration leads to extracting all the eigenvectors. The orthogonal iteration is then shown to be compatible with the combination of deflation and power iteration. The connection of QR method to orthogonal iteration is then briefly reviewed. Our presentation is unique and easy to understand among many accounts for the QR method by introducing the orthogonal iteration in terms of deflation and power iteration.

  • In this work, we propose an automatic word spacing system for Korean using conditional random fields (CRFs) with Korean features. We map a word spacing problem into a classification problem in our work. We build a basic system which uses CRFs and Eumjeol bigram. After then, we analyze the result of inner-test. We extend a basic system added by some Korean features which are Josa, Eomi and two head Eumjeols of word extracting from lexicon. From the results of experiment, we can see that the proposed method is better than previous methods. Additionally the proposed method will be able to use mobile and speech applications because of very small size of model.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a new algorithm for extracting the consensus pattern, or motif from sequence belonging to the same family. Two methods are considered for feature interval partitioning based on equal probability and equal width interval partitioning. C2H2 zinc finger protein and epidermal growth factor protein sequences are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for motif extraction. For two protein families, the equal width interval partitioning method performs better than the equal probability interval partitioning method.

  • This study was one of a series of studies on application of machine vision and image processing to extract the geometrical features of plants and to analyze plant growth. Several algorithms were developed to measure morphological properties of plants and describing the growth development of in-situ lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.). Canopy, centroid, leaf density and fractal dimension of plant were measured from a top viewed binary image. It was capable of identifying plants by a thinning top viewed image. Overlapping the thinning side viewed image with a side viewed binary image of plant was very effective to auto-detect meaningful nodes associated with canopy components such as stem, branch, petiole and leaf. And, plant height, stem diameter, number and angle of branches, and internode length and so on were analyzed by using meaningful nodes extracted from overlapped side viewed images. Canopy, leaf density and fractal dimension showed high relation with fresh weight or growth pattern of in-situ lettuces. It was concluded that machine vision system and image processing techniques are very useful in extracting geometrical features and monitoring plant growth, although interactive methods, for some applications, were required.

  • In this work, we propose a new method of extracting and weighting representative keywords(RKs) from a few documents that might interest a user. In order to extract RKs, we first extract candidate terms and then choose a number of terms called initial representative keywords (IRKS) from them through fuzzy inference. Then, by expanding and reweighting IRKS using term co-occurrence similarity, the final RKs are obtained. Performance of our approach is heavily influenced by effectiveness of selection method of IRKS so that we choose fuzzy inference because it is more effective in handling the uncertainty inherent in selecting representative keywords of documents. The problem addressed in this paper can be viewed as the one of calculating center of document vectors. So, to show the usefulness of our approach, we compare with two famous methods - Rocchio and Widrow-Hoff - on a number of documents collections. The results show that our approach outperforms the other approaches.

  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis for carbonyl compounds contained in the five kinds of filtrated myulchichuts have been made using HPLC. Carbonyl compounds were separated by converting them into 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives which, in turn extracting with hexane. The extract was dehydrated, filtered and examined on HPLC with $C_{18}column$. The quantitative determination of carbonyl species was achieved using standard calibration technique. Highly reproduceable results were obtained by this methods and the amounts of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives were highly correlative to peak heights. As the results, we find that the seven kinds of carbonyl compounds are contained in each of myulchichuts examined in this study. Five of which are identified as pyruvic acid, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone and butanone. But the amounts of carbonyl compounds vary widely with the kinds of the filtrated myulchichuts.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach for content-based video retrieval using non-parametric based motion classification in the shot-based video indexing structure. Our system proposed in this paper has supported the real-time video retrieval using spatio-temporal feature comparison by measuring the similarity between visual features and between motion features, respectively, after extracting representative frame and non-parametric motion information from shot-based video clips segmented by scene change detection method. The extraction of non-parametric based motion features, after the normalized motion vectors are created from an MPEG-compressed stream, is effectively fulfilled by discretizing each normalized motion vector into various angle bins, and by considering the mean, variance, and direction of motion vectors in these bins. To obtain visual feature in representative frame, we use the edge-based spatial descriptor. Experimental results show that our approach is superior to conventional methods with regard to the performance for video indexing and retrieval.

  • Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissues usually encountered in the wrist. In this paper, we propose a method to extract a ganglion cyst region from ultrasonography images by using image segmentation. The proposed method using the possibilistic c-means (PCM) clustering method is applicable to ganglion cyst extraction. The methods considered in this thesis are fuzzy stretching, median filter, PCM clustering, and connected component labeling. Fuzzy stretching performs well on ultrasonography images and improves the original image. Median filter reduces the speckle noise without decreasing the image sharpness. PCM clustering is used for categorizing pixels into the given cluster centers. Connected component labeling is used for labeling the objects in an image and extracting the cyst region. Further, PCM clustering is more robust in the case of noisy data, and the proposed method can extract a ganglion cyst area with an accuracy of 80% (16 out of 20 images).
