A series of batch and lab-scale pilot tests were conducted to optimize the design parameters for the application of soil washing techniques to the soil contaminated by heavy metals. Cu, Pb, and Zn were selected as target heavy metals. The concentrations of Cu, Pb, and Zn were 500mg/kg dry soil, 1, 000mg/kg dry soil, and 500mg/kg dry soil, respectively. Citric acid and oxalic acid were used for the extractants. In the batch tests, the extraction efficiencies for Cu, Pb, and Zn were 79%, 72%, 72%, respectively. The proper extractant concentration and dilution ratio(weight/volume) for Cu and Pb were turned to be citric acid 50mM and 1:5, respectively. The extraction efficiencies were enhanced with the addition of 1~2% OA-5 or SDS. From pilot scale tests for Pb, first stage and second stage of soil washing resulted in the extraction efficiency of 59% and 78%, respectively.

In this preliminary study, we assessed the toxicity of domestic bentonites using environmental toxicity testings of seed germination and bacterial bioluminescence. In cases of tested bulk bentonite samples, following ranges of toxicity were observed: -3 ~ 95% bioluminescence, 7.1 ~ 92.1% Lactuca germination. Similar results were also observed among tested other seeds, except seed Raphanus. No significant correlations between toxicity and metals contents of bentonite extractants were observed throughout this investigation. Interestingly, distinct different effects were observed according to bentonite colors (blue $67{\pm}8.7%$, pink $27{\pm}10.4%$, brown $58{\pm}14.5%$).
Succinic acid is an important material in industries producing biodegradable polymers, food and pharmaceutical products, and green solvents. Furthermore, succinate fermentation is a novel process due to the fixation of $CO_2$ into succinate during fermentation. However, the impurities in fermentation broth make the separation process of succinic acid be difficult. Reactive extraction has been proposed to be an effective primary separation step of succinic acid from dilute fermentation broth. This article presents the principles of reactive extraction along with the characteristics of tertiary amino extractants. A brief overview on the current research on reactive extraction of succinic acid is presented. Finally, for the succinic acid separation, reactive extraction as a primary step is suggested in the whole downstream process for succinic acid from fermentation broth.
Ionic liquids, composed of organic cations and either organic or inorganic anions remain liquid over a wide range of temperature. ionic liquids are a new group of solvents or extractants of great interest as a potential 'green solvent'. Ionic liquids are gaining wide recognition as novel solvents in many research fields, such as chemistry, chemical engineering, electrochemitry, etc. However, not much researches have been done related to biotechnology using ionic liquids, while a lot of researches have been performed in chemistry. The merits of ionic liquids in bioseparation technology are originated from some unique properties of ionic liquids, such as negligible vapor pressure, good thermal stability, controllable viscosity and miscibility with water and organic solvents. An appropriate selection of ionic liquid for bioprocesses requires basic knowledge on physicochemical properties of ionic liquids. This review gives a brief overview on the application of ionic liquids in biotechnology, including bioconversion and bioseparation.
In this study, we have investigated solvent extraction of Ga and recovery of high pure Ga solution from MOCVD dust for manufacturing of LED chip. Effect of extractan, concentration of extractant were examined for choosing the more effective extractant and high pure Ga solution was fabricated by multi-stage extraction/stripping process. For extraction/separation of Ga based on the analysis of raw-material in previous study, 3 different extractants PC 99A, DP-8R, Cyanex 272 has been investigated and the extraction efficiency of 1.5 M Cyanex 272 was 43.8%. It was conformed that extraction efficiency of Ga was 83% in multi-stage extraction and 5N high purity Ga stripping solution without impurities also obtained.
The sorption and fixation of cesium in dilute solutions by vermiculite saturated with Na or K were studied in order to investigate any possibibty of its use in radioactive effluent treatment. The cesium sorbed by vermiculite with the increase in pH is attributed to the increase of sorption surface as a result of the dispersion. The increased cesium sorption by Na-vermiculite is due to the different sorption rates by the different exchange sites : external surface and internal surface. It is shown that the larger amount of sorbed cesium was extracted by KCI rather than with any other extractants. It is suggested that the fixation of cesium by vermiculite occurs at the crystal edge where Cs may replace K. Domestic vermiculite is a valuable material for use in the cesium sorption and fixation, and might be useful as a good packing material outside the tank of highly radioactive liquid waste. And from these results one could suggest that the artificial alteration of the biotite to vermiculite might be occurring by treating with NaCl.
A natural colorant was extracted from Cassia tara L. using buffer solutions (pH: 2-11) as extractants. The dyeing solution (Cassia tara L. extract) extracted using pH 9 buffer solution was found to give the highest K/S values of dyed fabrics. Cotton and silk fabrics were dyed with Cassia tara L. extract at $60^{\circ}C$ for 60 min with pre-treatment of various metal salts as mordants. It was found that Cassia tara L. extract was polygenetic dyestuffs and its major components were anthraquinones. Studies have been made on the effects of the kind of mordant on dyeing properties and colour fastnesses of cotton and silk fabrics. The K/S of cotton fabrics increased in the order of the dyeing using $FeSO_4 >CuSO_4> ZnSO_4> MnSO_4\cong Al_2(SO_4)_3 > NiSo_4 > none$, however, the K/S of silk fabrics increased in the order of the dyeing using $FeSO_4 > CuSO_4 > ZnSO_4\cong Al_2(SO_4)_3 > MnSO_4\cong NiSO_4 > none$. It was found that the K/S values of dyed fabrics were largely affected by the colour difference $(\DeltaE)$ between mordanted fabric and control fabric. However, they were not depended on the content of mordanted metal ion of the fabrics. Mordants $FeSO_4$ and CuSO_4$ for cotton fabric, $FeSO_4,\; CuSO_4,\; and\; Al_2(S0_4)_3$ for silk fabric were found to give good light fastness (rating 4).

In textile industries, waste effluent containing zinc is generated during the manufacture of rayon yarn from the wood pulp or cotton linters. Due to the strict environmental regulations and the presence of toxic metallic and other constituents, the discharge of industrial effluents in the sewage or disposal of solid sludge as landfill is restricted. Before recycling of zinc as zinc sulphate solution to the spinning-bath of the rayon manufacturing plant the zinc sulphate solution must be free from calcium, which is deleterious to the process as gypsum precipitates with the increase in concentration and forms scale in the bath. In the present work an attempt has been made to develop a process following solvent extraction technique using thiophosphinic extractants, Cyanex 272 and 302 modified with isodecanol and diluted in kerosene to recover zinc from rayon effluent. Various process parameters viz. extraction of zinc from different concentration of solution, distribution ratio, selective extraction, O/A ratio on extraction and stripping from the loaded organic, complex formation in the organic phase etc. have been studied to see the feasibility of the process. The extractant Cyanex 302 has been found selective for the recovery of 99.99% of zinc from the effluent above equilibrium pH 3.4 maintaining the O/A ratio of 1/30 leaving all the calcium in the raffinate. It selectively extracted zinc in the form of complex $[R_{2}Zn.3RH]_{org}$ and retained all the calcium in the aqueous raffinate. The zinc from the loaded Cyanex 302 can be stripped with 10% sulphuric acid at even O/A ratio of 10 without affecting the stripping efficiency. The stripped solution thus obtained could be recycled in the spinning bath of the rayon plant. The raffinate obtained after the recovery of zinc could be disposed safely without affacting environment.
A study on the recovery of gallium from leaching solutions is carried out by solvent extraction in order to produce gallium oxide of high purity. The results show that the extraction of gallium is found to be increase with acidities of aqueous solution up to 7.4 M/L when pure isopropyl ether is used. And the extraction of iron also increases with increasing acidity of aqueous solution. It appears that the separation of gallium from iron cannot be satisfactorily accomplished with isopropyl ether. But, in the case of extaction with D2EHPA, almost complete extraction of iron is achieved-leaving all the gallium in the aqueous solution-by maintaining the acidity of aqueous solution at 2 M/L. Accordingly, $Ga_2O_3{\cdot}H_2O$ of more than 99wt.% in purity can be produced from zinc residues through the processes comprising of alkali leaching, precipitation by neutralization and solvent extraction using isopropyl ether and D2EHPA as extractants.
The separation behaviour of Mo and W from sulfuric acid solution by solvent extraction with Alamine 336 was investigated as a function of solution pH and extractant concentration. Selective extraction of Mo over W by Alamine 336 was obtained in the pH range of 3-5 with low amine concentration. The mixture of Alamine 336 and acidic extractants improved the separation factor between Mo and W and was in the following order: D2EPHA > PC88A > Decanol > Versatic acid. The stripping efficiency of Mo and W from the loaded mixture of Alamine 336 and D2EHPA was very poor, while complete stripping of Mo and W was possible from the mixture of Alamine 336 and Decanol by using a mixture of $NH_4OH$ and $NH_4Cl$.
