Objectives : This study research some special aspects of Extraordinary Organs and Eight Extra Meridians which differentiated from ordinary Organs and Meridians, and the association between Extraordinary Organs and Eight Extra Meridians. Methods : First, researched classification standard and physiological characteristics of Extraordinary Organs through studying various chapters of HuangdiNeijing. Second, researched The Association between Extraordinary Organs and Eight Extra Meridians through studying on the origin of Eight Extra Meridians in HuangdiNeijing. Third, from accompanying researching the subject of Cheon-gye(天癸) and human body shape, draw synthetic hypothesis on the relationship among ordinary Meridians and Organs, muscles and skins of body shape, Extraordinary Organs and Eight Extra Meridians. Results & Conclusions : The following conclusions could be drawn. 1. Extraordinary Organs afford background for shaping human body. This is same as the properties of the earth which afford background for shaping all creations. The physiological characteristics of Extraordinary Organs is intermediation and regulation between Ki(氣) of Five Viscera & six Bowels and shape of muscles & skins in human body. 2. The origin of Eight Extra Meridians could be found in HuangdiNeijing. The collateral Meridians of the Uterus and Epiglottis Meridian are specifically formulated to supplying for the Uterus or Epiglottis. From this we can draw The Association between Extraordinary Organs and Eight Extra Meridians, that is Eight Extra Meridians are specifically formulated to supplying for Extraordinary Organs. 3. The Cheon-gye(天癸) is doing significant function in Eight Extra Meridians supplying for Extraordinary Organs. Cheon-gye concerned to growth, secondary sexual characters, generative function, aging process. Theses are all concerned with the changing of human body shape. Cheon-gye urge to change the body shape with following the human life cycle. 4. Human body has vertical symmetry because preserve its shape from the gravitational force. Eight Extra Meridians place at the middle or flank axis of human body, thus do physiological function that assistant human body have vertical symmetry shape. The purpose of shaping vertical symmetry is securing space what the inner Twelve Regular Meridians and Five Viscera & six Bowels create there own physical changes. On the other hand the inner changes need deviation between left and right because of mobility and circulation of force. But human body change the shape in the process of growth, reproduction, aging. Eight Extra Meridians play role at time of these processing, thus they deeply concerned to human's life cycle and reproduction. 5. Eight Extra Meridians and Extraordinary Organs were named 'Extra' because of some special aspects which differentiated from ordinary Meridians and Organs. All they play role to have vertical symmetry shape of human body and maintain the shape, thus they deeply concerned to the change of human life cycle. These shaping maintaining and the change of human life cycle are very special aspects of human body. So they needed to differently cognize separate to the ordinary changes of Five Viscera & six Bowels and Twelve Meridians at inner space.

  • Estrogens are the key hormones regulating the development and function of reproductive organs in all vertebrates. Recent evidence indicates that estrogens play important roles in the immune system, cancer development, and other critical biological processes related to human well-being. Obviously, the gonads (ovary and testis) are the primary sites of estrogen synthesis, but estrogens synthesized in extra- gonadal sites play an equally important role in controlling biological activities. Understanding non-gonadal sites of estrogen synthesis and function is crucial and will lead to therapeutic interventions targeting estrogen signaling in disease prevention and treatment. Developing a rationale targeting strategy remains challenging because knowledge of extra-gonadal biosynthesis of estrogens, and the mechanism by which estrogen activity is exerted, is very limited. In this review, we will summarize recent discoveries of extra-gonadal sites of estrogen biosynthesis and their local functions and discuss the significance of the most recent novel discovery of intestinal estrogen biosynthesis.

  • This paper considers an (r, Q) policy for operation of a multipurpose facility. It is assumed that whenever the inventory level falls below r, the model starts to produce the fixed amount of Q. The facility can be utilized for extra production during idle periods, that is, when the inventory level is still greater than r right after a main production operation is terminated or an extra production operation is finished. But, whenever the facility is in operation for an extra production, the operation can not be terminated for the main production even though the inventory level falls below r. In the model, the demand for the product is assumed to arrive according to a compound Poisson process and the processing time required to produce a product is assumed to follow an arbitary distribution. Similarly, the orders for the extra production is assumed to accur in a Poisson process are the extra production processing time is assumed to follow an arbitrary distribution. It is further assumed that unsatisfied demands are backordered and the expected comulative amount of demands is less than that of production during each production period. Under a cost structure which includes a setup/ production cost, a linear holding cost, a linear backorder cost, a linear extra production lost sale cost, and a linear extra production profit, an expression for the expected cost per unit time for a given (r, Q) policy is obtained, and using a convex property of the cost function, a procedure to find the optimal (r, Q) policy is presented.

  • Subject : The application of eight extra Meridians theory to birth physiology of Korean Medicine. Objective : This study suggests physiological theories in child birth in Korean Medicine. Method : First, the application of eight extra Meridians and extraordinary organs theories to physiology, pathology, pregnancy, postnatal period of women were examined based on major publications and theories of some historical characters. This work provided clues for application of eight extra Meridians theory to birth physiology. Second, the progressing birth physiology of modern medicine based on the importance of the brain function was examined, with which the application of eight extra Meridians and extraordinary organs theories to the birth process showed close relationship. Conclusion : The following conclusions could be drawn. In traditional publications of Korean Medicine, the contents explaining birth physiology with eight extra Meridians theory were scarce, mainly due to the doctor's perception of birth as part of the natural female physiology along with menstruation and pregnancy. However, the contents explaining menstruation, pregnancy, postnatal physiology and pathology through eight extra Meridians theory could be found in classical texts such as Neijing, Jebyeong-wonhuron, Imjeunginameuian. Therefore, it is reasonable to apply the eight extra Meridians theory to the birth process as well. Modern medicine's understanding that pituitary and hypothalamus hormones are in play on womb in the birth process, such as Oxytocin, is in continuous progress. Moreover, the environmental condition that has been traditionally known ideal to the birth process in both the East and West-dark, warm, quiet and secluded-is being confirmed in modern research. The application of eight extra Meridians theory to birth physiology can help to explain these modern information, and thus make them more acceptable.

  • Objectives: TMJ is the joint that connects the mandible to the skull, and it balances the body by holding the skull in the right position. The Meridian flows through the whole body. The objective of this study is to examine and clarify the relationship between the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and the Meridian flow, especially around the TMJ. Methods: We reviewed the literature on the 8 Extra Meridians and the 12 Main Meridians around the TMJ. Results & Conclusion: Eight Extra Meridians keep the balance and harmony of the TMJ, and also play an important role in maintaining equilibrium of Yin and Yang of the whole body. The 12 Main Meridians, twelve Meridian Divergence (12經別) and Meridian Sinew also play an important role in the balance and harmony of the whole body based on the function of the Vicera and Bowels (臟腑). So it is conceivable that the role of TMJ is important in terms of health care.

  • This paper describes the development of a parallel computational algorithm based on the finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI) method that uses a local Lagrange multiplier. In this approach, structural computational domain is decomposed into non-overlapping sub-domains using local Lagrange multiplier. The local Lagrange multipliers are imposed at interconnecting nodes. 8-node solid element using extra shape function is adopted by using the representative volume element (RVE). The parallel computational algorithm is further established based on message passing interface (MPI). Finally, the present FETI-local approach is implemented on parallel hardware and shows improved performance.
