  • Box sections are symmetrical sections and they have high moment of inertia in both directions, therefore they are good members in tall building structures. For the rigid connection in structures with box column continuity plates are used on level of beam flanges in column. Assembly of the continuity plates is a difficult and unreliable work due to lack of weld or high welding and cutting in the fourth side of column in panel zone, so the use of experimental stiffeners have been considered by researchers. This paper presented an experimental investigation on connection in box columns. The proposed connection has been investigated in four cases which contain connection without internal and external stiffeners(C-0-00), connection with continuity plates(C-I-CP), connection with external vase shape stiffener (C-E-VP) and connection with surrounding plates(C-E-SP). The results show that the connections with vase plates and surrounding plates can respectively increase the ultimate strength of the connection up to 366% and 518% than the connection without stiffeners, in case connection with the continuity plates this parameter increases about 39%. In addition, the proposed C-E-VP and C-E-SP connection provide a rigid and safe connection to acquire rigidity of 95% and 98% respectively. But C-I-CP connection is classified as semi-rigid connections.

  • This paper provides the results of an experimental and analytical study performed on the beam to Concrete Filled Circular Steel Column connections with the external stiffener rings under the gravity loads. Specimens are modeled as a 1/4 scale of the beam-columns as gravity loads are applied to a multi-story frame. Important parameters in this study are the width of the external rings, the diameter-thickness ratios of column and whether or not the external rings are welded to the circular column. A total of 20 specimens are tested to clarify the structural behavior of the CFT column connections with the external stiffener rings. The test results are summarized for the yield and maximum strength and stiffness. The existing design equations for the allowable and yield load capacities are referred to verify the structural characteristics for the connections.

  • This paper describes the structural analysis and optimization of stiffeners used in inner tanks for liquid natural gas (LNG) storage, so that the costs can be minimized while the critical buckling load of the inner tank still exceeds the external pressure exerted by the perlite. The original calculation of perlite pressure applied to the inner tank was based on Zick's code, which led to the overestimation of the external pressure, and consequently, an oversized stiffener. In this study, the effects of the material properties of perlite on the external pressure distribution are scrutinized, and the optimum dimensions of a single stiffener are finally obtained through a series of parametric studies. A 15% decrease in the cost of the stiffener compared with the original design is achieved.

  • Effect of the joint details on the stress distribution over a slot structure has been studied in order to improve its fatigue life using a finite element analysis. The joint details of interest are the radius and height of scallop at the stiffener as well as the mis-alignment between the stiffener and longitudinal member. For a slot structure currently used, the stiffener heel is subjected to the maximum stress for a given external load, where is a potential fatigue crack initiation site. The stresses at the stiffener heel and toe decrease both by increasing the scallop radius and more significantly by increasing the mis-alignment while no notable effect of the scallop height on it is appreciated. A proper combination of these factors makes it possible to reduce the stresses at the stiffener heel and In, theoretically, more than 50%. This is attributed to the modification of the stress distribution over the slot structure including the transition of the maximum stressed region from the stiffener heel to the slot surface of the transverse web. Such then results in a g[eat improvement of the fatigue life of the slot structure.

  • Welded hollow spherical joints are commonly used joints in space grid structures. An internal stiffener is generally adopted to strengthen the joints when large hollow spheres are used. To further strengthen it, external stiffeners can be used at the same time. In this study, axial compression tests are conducted on four full-scale 550 mm spherical joints. The failure modes and strengths of the tested joints are investigated. It shows that the external stiffeners are able to increase the strength of the joint up to 25%. A numerical model for large spherical joints with stiffeners is established and verified against the experimental results. Parametric studies are executed considering six main design factors using the verified model. It is found that the strength of the spherical joint increases as the thickness, height and number of the external stiffeners increase, and the hollow sphere's diameter has a neglectable effect on the enhancement caused by the external stiffeners. Based on the experimental and numerical results, a practical formula for the compressive bearing capacity of large welded hollow spherical joints with both internal and external stiffeners is proposed. The proposed formula gives a conservative prediction on the compressive capacity of large welded hollow spherical joints with both internal and external stiffeners.

  • This paper represents the behavior of CFT column to H-beam full-scale connection with external T-stiffener. 6 specimens whose T-stiffeners which are compounded of vertical element and horizontal element were made under the parameter of the strength ratio of each elements(vertical element and horizontal element in T-stiffener) to the beam full plastic moment. The analysis-parameters demonstrated in the base of the data that we get in experiment are strength stiffness, and plastic rotational capacity. All of specimen showed stable hysteretic behavior, and the horizontal element is more critical than vertical element in strength and stiffness. The mean beam plastic rotation of all specimen except the TS-2 specimen is 2.97% rad.

  • This paper is a study on the behavior of Concrete-Filled Square Tubular(CFST) column to H-beam connections reinforced with external stiffeners and reinforcing bar. The cyclic loading tests of 5 test specimens were carried out. The main Parameters are as follows; 1)the length of the stiffener: 200mm, 250mm, 2)the diameter of reinforcing bar: HD16, 19. The results of the researches demonstrate that the increase of the stiffener length was more effective than the increase of the area of reinforcing bar in the point of both strength and stiffness. By reinforcing external stiffeners, stable hysteretic behavior was shown and plastic hinge was formed on the beam flange. Cold-formed tube sections should be used carefully to avoid the welding fracture at the round corners of section, and the proposed welding methods are suitable for this connections.

  • The goal of this paper is to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of concrete-filled tubular column to H-beam connection with external T stiffener through the elasto-plastic finite element method and to offer basic data for the design of T stiffener. For the accuracy, analysis results are compared with experimental results. It makes use of several stress and strain indices to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of connection. An alternative plan that decreases the stress concentration of beam flange to horizontal stiffener connection is proposed through the elasto-plastic finite element method.

  • The goal of this paper is to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of concrete-filled tubular column to H-beam connections with external T-stiffener through the finite element method and to offer basic data for the design of T-stiffener. To identify the problems of previous test results, the same shapes of the full-scale test specimens were modeled for the finite element analysis. Results of the analysis were compared with the test results. Several stress and strain indices were used to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of connection with various T-stiffeners parameters. The models of analysis with different T-stiffener are grouped into TS, TSD, and TSH series. An alternative plan that decreases the stress concentration of beam flange to horizontal stiffener connection is proposed through the elasto-plastic finite element method. The basic design idea and minimum sizes of T-stiffener were proposed based on the various indices in relation to the connection details.

  • Generally the stiffened plate in the ship structure is subjected to not only axial load but shear load. With respect to those combined loads buckling analysis in necessary. In this paper, buckling strength is analyzed by using Finite Element Method when the stiffened plate with hole is under loading conditions mentioned above. To obtain the higher buckling strength, we need some reinforcement. The methods of reinforcement are attaching doubler around hole and stiffeners in the arbitrary directions For the sake of convenience those arbitrary directions were selected paralleled($0^{\circ}C$), vertical($90^{\circ}C$)and oblique($45^{\circ}C$) to the edge. Two kinds of method mentioned above are investigated, it is clarified that which of the two is more effective reinforcement. From the viewpoint of buckling strength, following conclusions were obtained. When external load direction is unknown, doubler reinforcement is more effective than those of parallel and vertical stiffener. And oblique stiffener reinforcement is more effective than that of doubler when external load direction is know.
