Extensive investigation on silicon based thin film reveals a wide range of film characteristics, from low optical gap to high optical gap, from amorphous to micro-crystalline silicon etc. Fabrication of single junction, tandem and triple junction solar cell with suitable materials, indicate that fabrication of solar cell of a relatively moderate efficiency is possible with a better light induced stability. Due to these investigations, various competing materials like wide band gap silicon carbide and silicon oxide, low band gap micro-crystalline silicon and silicon germanium etc were also prepared and applied to the solar cells. Such a multi-junction solar cell can be a technologically promising photo-voltaic device, as the external quantum efficiency of such a cell covers a wider spectral range.

A series of blue fluorescent emitters based on triphenylene derivatives were synthesized via the Diels-Alder reaction in moderate yields. The electronic absorption and emission characteristics of the new functional materials were affected by the nature of the substituent on the triphenylene nucleus. Multilayered OLEDs were fabricated with a device structure of: ITO/NPB (50 nm)/EML (30 nm)/Bphen (30 nm)/Liq (2.0 nm)/Al (100 nm). All devices showed efficient blue emissions. Among those, a device using 1 gives the best performances with a high brightness (978 cd $m^{-2}$ at 8.0 V) and high efficiencies (a luminous efficiency of 0.80 cd/A, a power efficiency of 0.34 lm/W and an external quantum efficiency of 0.73% at 20 $mA/cm^2$). The peak wavelength of the electroluminescence was 455 nm with CIEx,y coordinates of (0.17, 0.14) at 8.0 V.
We have developed a new multifunctional material, 4,4',4"-tris(4-naphthalen-2-yl-phenyl)amine (2-TNPA), which can be used as a blue-emitting and hole-transporting material in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), as well as a donor material in organic solar cells (OSCs) and an active material in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). The OLED device doped with 3% 2-TNPA shows a maximum current efficiency of 3.0 $cdA^{-1}$ and an external quantum efficiency of 3.0%. 2-TNPA is a more efficient hole-transporting material than 4,4'-bis[N-(naphthyl-N-phenylamino)]biphenyl (NPD). Furthermore, 2-TNPA shows a power-conversion efficiency of 0.39% in OSC and a field-effect mobility of $3.2{\times}10^{-4}cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$ in OTFTs.

In this thesis, verifies electrical-optical characteristics of phosphorescent materials. basic structure of fabricating devices is glass/ITO/$\alpha$-NPD($300{\AA}$)/CBP:Guest($300{\AA}$)/BCP($80{\AA}$)/$Alq_3(100{\AA})$/Al($1000{\AA}$). In efficiency, fabrication of organic light emitting diodes using $Ir(btp)_2acac$ phosphorescent material is external quantum efficiency 0.268% as doping concentration 3%. At CIE coordinates, phosphorescent material $Ir(btp)_2acac$ following materials moves high purity red color(x=0.6686, y=0.3243). The brightness shows $285cd/cm^2$.
We have grown famatinite $Cu_3SbS_4$ films by using sulfurization of Cu/Sb stack film. Sulfurization at $500^{\circ}C$ produced famatinite $Cu_3SbS_4$ phase, while $400^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$ sulfurization exhibited unreacted and mixed phases. The fabricated $Cu_3SbS_4$ film showed S-deficiency, and secondary phase of $Cu_{12}Sb_4S_{13}$. The secondary phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence and external quantum efficiency measurements. We have also fabricated solar cell in substrate type structure, ITO/ZnO/(Zn,Sn)O/$Cu_3SbS_4$/Mo/glass, where $Cu_3SbS_4$ was used as a absorber layer and (Zn,Sn)O was employed as a Cd-free buffer. Our best cell showed power conversion efficiency of 0.198%. Characterization results of $Cu_3SbS_4$ absorber indicates deep defect (due to S-deficiency) and low shunt resistance (due to $Cu_{12}Sb_4S_{13}$ phase). Thus in order to improve the cell efficiency, it is required to grow high quality $Cu_3SbS_4$ film with no S-deficiency and no secondary phase.

We presented a micro hemi-sphere structure flexible film to improve the external quantum efficiency (EQE) in OLEDs. The micro hemi-sphere flexible film was fabricated with breath figure (BF) method and replica process. At 45 mg/mL of concentration, the size of the hemi-spheres was approximately 6.2 ㎛ were obtained which are the most circular shape. So, it was possible to yield the best performance with an improvement of 33 % in the EQE and the widest viewing angle ranging from 0° to 70°. As a result, the hemi-sphere film's size and distribution seem to play important roles in enhancing the EQE in OLEDs. Furthermore, the flexible hemi-sphere film based on polymeric materials could offer an effective, large-scale, mass-produced product and a simple process and approach to achieve high efficiency in flexible OLEDs.
The coupling reaction between 5-bromo-3-phenylbenzo[c]isoxazole and diphenylamine followed by further condensation with a mono-, di- or ter-acetyl aromatic compound in the presence of diphenyl phosphate at $145^{\circ}C$ gave a novel asymmetric diarylquinolines, oligoquinolines with diphenylamine endgroups, and a first generation quinoline dendrimer in 41-82% isolated yield. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of the oligoquinolines were characterized by cyclic voltammograms (CVs) and spectroscopy. All the quinolines emit bright sky blue light due to charge transfer from quinoline group to diphenly amine with very high quantum efficiency (> 90%). Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated using these quinolines as emitting materials. Among different device architectures explored, OLEDs with a structure of ITO/PEDOT (40 nm)/TAPC (15 nm)/D-A quinoline (40 nm)/TPBI (30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al using TAPC as an electron blocking layer and TPBI as a hole blocking layer gave the best performance. A high external quantum efficiency in the range of 1.2-2.3% were achieved in all the quinolines with the best performance in BBQA(5). Our results indicate diarylamino-substituted oligoquinoline and dendrimer are promising materials for OLEDs applications.
Self assembled monolayers (SAM) are generally used at the anode/organic interface to enhance the carrier injection in organic light emitting devices, which improves the electroluminescence performance of organic devices. This paper reports the use of SAM of 1-decanethiol (H-S(CH2)9CH3) at the cathode/organic interface to enhance the electron injection process for organic light emitting devices. Aluminum (Al), tris-(8-hydroxyquionoline) aluminum (Alq3), N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3 -methylphenyl)-1,1'- diphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD) and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) were used as bottom cathode, an emitting layer (EML), a hole-transporting layer (HTL) and a top anode, respectively. The results of the capacitancevoltage (C-V), current density -voltage (J-V) and brightness-voltage (B-V), luminance and quantum efficiency measurements show a considerable improvement of the device performance. The dipole moment associated with the SAM layer decreases the electron schottky barrier between the Al and the organic interface, which enhances the electron injection into the organic layer from Al cathode and a considerable improvement of the device performance is observed. The turn-on voltage of the fabricated device with SAM layer was reduced by 6V, the brightness of the device was increased by 5 times and the external quantum efficiency is increased by 0.051%.

Two new blue emitting cationic iridium(III) complexes with two substituted 2-phenlypyridine ligands as main ligands and one 2,2'-biimidazole as an ancillary ligand, $[(L1)_2Ir(biim)]Cl$ (1) and $[(L2)_2Ir(biim)]Cl$ (2), where L1 = 2-(2',4'-difluorophenyl)-4-methylpyridine, L2 = 2-(2',4'-difluoro-3'-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4-methylpyridine and biim = 2,2'-biimidazole, were synthesized for applications in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). Their photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescent (EL) device performances were examined. The photoluminescent (PL) spectra revealed blue phosphorescence in the 450 to 485 nm range with a quantum yield of more than 10%. The iridium(III) compounds studied showed good solubility in organic solvents with no solvatochromism dependent on the solvent polarity. The solution-processed OLEDs were prepared with the configuration, ITO/PEDOT:PSS (40 nm)/mCP:Ir(III) (70 nm)/OXD-7 (20 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm), by spin coating the emitting layer containing the mCP host doped with the iridium phosphors. The best performance of the fabricated OLEDs based on compound 1 showed an external quantum efficiency of 4.5%, luminance efficiency of 8.52 cd $A^{-1}$ and blue emission with the CIE coordinates (x,y) of (0.16, 0.33).

The effects of nanotexturing and post-etching on the reflection and quantum efficiency properties of diamond wire sawn (DWS) multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) solar cell have been investigated. The chemical solutions, which are acidic etching solution (HF-$HNO_3$), metal assisted chemical etching (MAC etch) solutions ($AgNO_3$-HF-DI, HF-$H_2O_2$-DI) and post-etching solution (diluted KOH at $80^{\circ}C$), were used for micro- and nano-texturing at the surface of diamond wire sawn (DWS) mc-Si wafer. Experiments were performed with various post-etching time conditions in order to determine the optimized etching condition for solar cell. The reflectance of mc-Si wafer texturing with acidic etching solution showed a very high reflectance value of about 30% (w/o anti-reflection coating), which indicates the insufficient light absorption for solar cell. The formation of nano-texture on the surface of mc-Si contributed to the enhancement of light absorption. Also, post-etching time condition of 240 s was found adequate to the nano-texturing of mc-Si due to its high external quantum efficiency of about 30% at short wavelengths and high short circuit current density ($J_{sc}$) of $35.4mA/cm^2$.
