  • Image segmentation technique is becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis in areas such as object oriented image classification to extract object regions of interest within images. This paper presents a new method for image segmentation to consider spectral and spatial information of high resolution satellite image. Firstly, the initial seeds were automatically selected using local variation of multi-spectral edge information. After automatic selection of significant seeds, a segmentation was achieved by applying MSRG which determines the priority of region growing using information drawn from similarity between the extracted each seed and its neighboring points. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the results obtained using the proposed method were compared with the results obtained using conventional region growing and watershed method. The quantitative comparison was done using the unsupervised objective evaluation method and the object-based classification result. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method has good potential for application in the object-based analysis of high resolution satellite images.

  • This study was aimed to estimate the total application cost and utilization of Turf grass VFS application through the field experiment. The experimental plots were constructed in an upland field of Iksan city within the Saemangeum watershed. Turf grass was transplanted at the down-slope edge of the pollution source area in each of the treated plots. Three rainfall events were monitored during the experiment period, and the rainfall-runoff relationships and NPS pollution reduction effects of the VFS systems were assessed. As results, the reduction ratio of runoff volume ranged 14.1~64.0 %, while the NPS pollution reduction ratio ranged 9.8~73.9 % for SS, 24.0~84.2 % for T-N, 31.6~80.9 % for T-P respectively. The total cost of VFS application was estimated by considering purchase cost of Turf grass sods and construction and maintenance costs of VFS system as well as the loss caused by giving up crop cultivation for the area needed to construct the VFS. The total cost of the VFS was estimated to be approximately \3,379,000/ha/year for the first year of application, and this cost could be decreased to \1,899,000/ha/year from the second year as the construction cost of VFS could no longer need to be counted afterwards. Apart from the NPS pollution reduction effects, the possible utilization of VFS was examined by detaching Turf grass within 40 % of VFS area for sale during spring time when the VFS systems fully covered. The benefit of selling the detached Turf grass sods was estimated as \1,260,000/ha/year, and also found that the VFS area successfully recovered by the time of the summer period. This benefit could attract farmers to adopt the VFS technique to manage agricultural NPS pollution.

  • The main purpose of this study is to apply spatial analysis using semivariograms to small-loop electromagnetic survey data to assess the extent of seawater intrusion in an experimental watershed. To indicate the extent of seawater intrusion over the study area, vertical electrical soundings at 33 points and electrical conductivity logging in two wells were conducted. From the correlation between resistivities obtained by inversion and the depth of the aquifer at the two wells, the region of seawater intrusion was identified and demonstrated by electrical conductivity logging results obtained over two years. To measure the variation of apparent conductivity with depth, an electromagnetic survey in six frequency bands was adopted. Apparent conductivity mapping with spatial analysis using semivariograms is an effective technique for identifying the region of seawater intrusion at shallow depth.

  • To clarify the effect of forest environmental changes (forest type difference and clearcut) on water storage capacity in soil and stream flow, watershed had been investigated in Pyungchang, Kangwon-Do during 1983∼1993. Hydrological datas such as runoff, monthly ratio of runoff to precipitation, runoff-duration, monthly runoff(by plenty, ordinary, low and scanty duration), total runoff, direct runoff by runoff components, bulk density, porosity, coarse pore, fine pore, permeability and effective water storage were obtained from Backokpo and Yimokjong watersheds. The monthly ratio of runoff to precipitation, runoff and runoff-duration were higher in Yimokiong than in Backokpo due to forest type difference. On compararing pre-treatment with trement period in two experimental watersheds, pre-treatment period was lower than treatment period. Physical properties of soil such as bulk density, porosity, permeability, and effective water storage capacity conditions were better during the pre-trement period than treatment period in the two experiment plots.

  • This study is on the application of TOPMDEL(Topographic based hydrologic model) Which is a distributed rainfall-runoff model to the flood runoff analysis. The test area was Wichun experimental catchment site which is mountainous mid-area (Dongok, 33.63$\textrm{km}^2$ and Goro, 109,725 $\textrm{km}^2$) and being operated by the Ministry of Construction and ransporation. A three-dimensional digital elevation model(DEM) map was constructed using a physiographic map(1/25,000) and GIS software, Arc/Info, was used to the analysis of geofraphic factors. The topographic index of Dongok and Goro subcatchment was similar. As a results of the analysis, the model was validated that the simulated peak flow of a flood runoff was fit to the observed data. For the analysis of the effects of grid size, Dongok subcatchment was divided into 100,120-,240 m grid and Goro subcatchment was divided into grid and 120,200,350 m grid. It was shown that the peak flow increased in proportion to the increases of the grid size, but peak times were constant regardless of the grid size in both of the watershed.

  • The physical characteristics and contaminant level of the dredged material generated by the channel maintenance and water quality improvement was analysed in a series of the study of the beneficial uses of dredged material in harbor. Dredged materials were sampled at Kunsan, Kohyun, Samchunpo, and Pohang Harbors and tested in the laboratory(leaching Test). From the experimental results, the specific gravity does not shows large differences, while almost grains are composed of silts and oyster shells except Pohang harbor containing gravels. The COD release rate and ignition loss is high in Kunsan dredged materials because of the watershed pollutants loads. The nutrient release rate is also relatively high. The release concentration of the heavy metals shows the highest values on Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu constituents at Kohyun, Kunsan, Samchunpo, Kunsan, respectively.

  • In this study, a various rainfall-runoff modelling approaches have been applied to the runoff response of flood hydrograph in three experimental watershed of the western part of korea. Mathematical models of runoff response also have been studied including linear system theory based on modeling techniques. Eight models were operated at the five water level gauging stations and the parameters of each model were computed by the Rosenbrock's hill climbing method to minimize the objective function. For the parameter verification of the models, a different complex rainfall-runoff event was selected in the same of the three river basins and derived IUH of the each model could be calibrated. Furthermore multiple regressions of the logarithmic transformation method between model parameters and catchment characteristics were studied in the selected five station.

  • The quantification of dry season evaporation in regions, where the magnitude of dry season flows is key to the regional water supply, is essential for good water management. Also, tree transpiration has a significant role in the water balance of a catchment whenever it is tree populated, especially in water limited environments. Such is the case in the Middle Mountains of Nepal where dry season flows play a significant role in downstream water provisioning and their proper functioning is key to the welfare of millions of people. This research seeks to study the transpiration of a pine forest stand in the Jikhu Khola Watershed in the Middle Mountains of Nepal. To the author's knowledge, no single study has been made so far to estimate the dry season evaporation from the planted forest stand in the Middle Mountains of Nepal. The study was carried out in planted pine forest embedded within the Jikhu Khola Catchment. Field campaigns of sap flow measurements were carried out from September, 2010 to February, 2011 in the selected plot of 15*15m dimension, to characterize dry season evaporation. This was done by measuring sap fluxes and sapwood areas over the six trees of different Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) classes. The sap flux was assessed using Granier's thermal dissipation probe (TDP) technique while sapwood area was determined using several incremental core(s) taken with a Pressler borer and immediately dyeing with methyl orange for estimating the actual depth of sapwood area. Transpiration of the plot was estimated by considering the contribution of each tree class. For this purpose, sap flux density, sapwood area and the proportion of total canopy area were determined for each tree class of the selected plot. From these data, hourly and diurnal transpiration rates for the plot were calculated for experimental period. Finally, Cienciala model was parameterized using the data recorded by the ADAS and other terrain data collected in the field. The calibrated model allowed the extrapolation of Sap flux density (v) over a six month period, from September 2010 to February 2011. The model given sap flux density was validated with the measured sap flux density from Grainier method.
