Air springs are designed to support loads using the volume elasticity in a cylindrical shaped air bag made of a composite material with a rubber matrix and two plies of reinforced fibers. Recently, applications of these springs have been expanded from railway vehicles to passenger cars. The current study presents a finite element analysis of a manufactured air spring for a passenger car. The analysis was conducted including the mounting steps of the air bag using a static loading condition. A method for controlling the internal pressure and displacements during the mounting step was developed. The characteristic load curve and the shape of the air bag were in good agreement with the experimental data with respect to the design height, the bump height and the rebound height. Results indicate that ply angles of fibers vary from 38 degrees to 56 degrees during static loading.
Effective monitoring, reliable data analysis, and rational data interpretations are challenges for engineers who are specialized in bridge health monitoring. This paper demonstrates how to use the Global Positioning System (GPS) and accelerometer data to accurately extract static and quasi-static displacements of the bridge induced by ambient effects. To eliminate the disadvantages of the two separate units, based on the characteristics of the bias terms derived from the GPS and accelerometer respectively, a wavelet based multi-step filtering method by combining the merits of the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) with the discrete stationary wavelet transform (SWT) is proposed so as to address the GPS deformation monitoring application more efficiently. The field measurements are carried out on an existing suspension bridge under the normal operation without any traffic interference. Experimental results showed that the frequencies and absolute displacements of the bridge can be accurate extracted by the proposed method. The integration of GPS and accelerometer can be used as a reliable tool to characterize the dynamic behavior of large structures such as suspension bridges undergoing environmental loads.
The paper deals with the damage assessment of the concrete beam using static displacements and the flexural stiffness reduction of the beam was evaluated. Simply supported concrete beams were loaded at the mid-span, and the applied load level ranged $20\%,\;40\%,\;80\%$ of the flexural strength of the beam. When the displacements from the tests were increased more than $10\%$ of the initial values, flexural cracks occured. Judging from the observed cracks, damaged area of the beams were assumed and the stiffness reduction using the smeared-cracking concept was estimated to minimize the error between the test results and analytical results. Four stages of the behavior of a RC beam, which are uncracked, initial cracking, stabilized cracking and post-yielding, can be considered to assess the damage of RC beams. Main parameters for the assessment were cracking area and the stiffness reduction ratio. In each stage, damaged elements and their stiffness reduction were estimated to minimized the error.
The purpose of present study is to propose a improved damage detection and assessment algorithm that has its basis on the method of system identification. This method allows the use of composite data which is constitute of static displacements and eigenmodes. In the dynamic test, thecurvature and slope of mode shape are introduced to formulate the error responses. The effectiveness of the proposed staristical system identification method is investigated through simulated and experimental studies. Real test data obtained from measurements are used to identify the actual location of damage and to revise the design variables in a concrete structure.
This paper presents the results of static vertical load tests carried out on a model building frame supported by pile groups embedded in cohesionless soil (sand). The effect of soil interaction on displacements and rotation at the column base and also the shears and bending moments in the columns of the building frame were investigated. The experimental results have been compared with those obtained from the finite element analysis and conventional method of analysis. Soil nonlinearity in the lateral direction is characterized by the p-y curves and in the axial direction by nonlinear vertical springs along the length of the piles (${\tau}-z$ curves) at their tips (Q-z curves). The results reveal that the conventional method gives the shear force in the column by about 40-60%, the bending moment at the column top about 20-30% and at the column base about 75-100% more than those from the experimental results. The response of the frame from the experimental results is in good agreement with that obtained by the nonlinear finite element analysis.
The US railroad network carries 40% of the nation's total freight. Railroad bridges are the most critical part of the network infrastructure and, therefore, must be properly maintained for the operational safety. Railroad managers inspect bridges by measuring displacements under train crossing events to assess their structural condition and prioritize bridge management and safety decisions accordingly. The displacement of a railroad bridge under train crossings is one parameter of interest to railroad bridge owners, as it quantifies a bridge's ability to perform safely and addresses its serviceability. Railroad bridges with poor track conditions will have amplified displacements under heavy loads due to impacts between the wheels and rail joints. Under these circumstances, vehicle-track-bridge interactions could cause excessive bridge displacements, and hence, unsafe train crossings. If displacements during train crossings could be measured objectively, owners could repair or replace less safe bridges first. However, data on bridge displacements is difficult to collect in the field as a fixed point of reference is required for measurement. Accelerations can be used to estimate dynamic displacements, but to date, the pseudo-static displacements cannot be measured using reference-free sensors. This study proposes a method to estimate total transverse displacements of a railroad bridge under live train loads using acceleration and tilt data at the top of the exterior pile bent of a standard timber trestle, where train derailment due to excessive lateral movement is the main concern. Researchers used real bridge transverse displacement data under train traffic from varying bridge serviceability levels. This study explores the design of a new bridge deck-pier experimental model that simulates the vibrations of railroad bridges under traffic using a shake table for the input of train crossing data collected from the field into a laboratory model of a standard timber railroad pile bent. Reference-free sensors measured both the inclination angle and accelerations of the pile cap. Various readings are used to estimate the total displacements of the bridge using data filtering. The estimated displacements are then compared to the true responses of the model measured with displacement sensors. An average peak error of 10% and a root mean square error average of 5% resulted, concluding that this method can cost-effectively measure the total displacement of railroad bridges without a fixed reference.
The major objective of this study is to investigate the effects and application of improvement for railway steel plate girder bridge by resilient panel track system. It analyzed the mechanical behaviors of steel plate girder bridge with applying resilient panel track system on the finite element analysis and laboratory test for static & dynamic characteristics. As a result, the improvement of steel plate girder bridge with resilient panel track systems are obviously effective for the static & dynamic response which is non-ballast steel plate girder bridge. The analytical and experimental study are carried out to investigate resilient panel track system decrease vertical acceleration and deflection on steel plate girder bridge for serviceability. And the resilient panel track system reduced dynamic maximum displacements (about 59%) and stresses (about 82%), the increase of dynamic safety is predicted by adopting resilient panel track system. From the dynamic test results of steel plate girder bridge, it is investigated that vertical acceleration and deflection is very low with applying resilient panel track system. The servicing steel plate girder bridge with resilient panel track system has need of the reasonable improvement measures which could be reducing the effect of static and dynamic behavior that degradation phenomenon of structure by an unusual response characteristic and a drop durability.

A damage identification technique using static displacements was investigated to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. For this, the optimization technique was utilized. In this study, structural damage was represented by the reduction in the stiffness of an element. Next, a health index of the element was introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Comparisons with numerical and experimental tests were performed to investigate the applicability of the proposed method in the practical field. Various damage scenarios were considered by varying damage-width as well as damage-degree. The influence of noise on the damage identification scheme was also investigated numerically. Finally, the applicability and the limitation of the proposed method' were discussed.
The vibrations of bodies subjected to fluid flow can cause modifications in the flow conditions, giving rise to interaction forces that depend primarily on displacements and velocities of the body in question. In this paper the linearized equations of motion for bodies of arbitrary prismatic or cylindrical cross-section in two-dimensional cross-flow are presented, considering the three degrees of freedom of the body cross-section. By restraining the rotational motion, equations applicable to circular tubes, pipes or cables are obtained. These equations can be used to determine stability limits for such structural systems when subjected to non uniform cross-flow, or to evaluate, under the quasi static assumption, their response to vortex or turbulent excitation. As a simple illustration, the stability of a pipe subjected to a bidimensional flow in the direction normal to the pipe axis is examined. It is shown that the approach is extremely powerful, allowing the evaluation of fluid-structure interaction in unidimensional structural systems, such as straight or curved pipes, cables, etc, by means of either a combined experimental-numerical scheme or through purely numerical methods.
