A two-stage bioreactor, which consists of a biotrickling filter module and a biofilter module in series, was investigated for the enhanced treatment of a VOC mixture, toluene and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Throughout the experiments, the overall inlet loading rate was maintained at approximately $43g/m^3/hr$, but the inlet ratios of the VOCs were modified. The experimental results showed that the different ratios of the VOC mixture resulted in changes of overall removal efficiencies, elimination capacities (ECs) and microbial accumulation on the surface of each packing material. The ratio of inlet toluene to MEK at 50 : 150 was found to be most effective in terms of the overall removal efficiency, because, at this condition, MEK (i.e., the hydrophilic compound) was mostly removed in the biotrickling filter module and the following biofilter module was used to remove toluene. It was also found that when the inlet loading rate of the VOC mixture was serially increased stepwise within short-term periods, the ECs for toluene dropped significantly but the ECs for MEK increased at the ratio of the VOC mixture. These results implied that substrate interaction and/or substrate preferable utilization might have an effect on the biological removal of each compound in the two-stage bioreactor; therefore, the bioreactor should be operated in the condition where the substrate interaction could be minimized in order to maximize overall performance of the two-stage bioreactor.
Hybrid PV/Thermal systems consisting of photovoltaic module and thermal collector can produce the electricity and thermal energy. The solar radiation increases the temperature of PV modules, resulting in the decrease of their electrical efficiency. Accordingly hot air can be extracted from the space between the PV panel and roof, so the efficiency of the PV module increases. The extracted thermal energy can be used in several ways, increasing the total energy output of the system. This study describes a basic type of PV/T collector using water. In order to analyze the performance of the collector, the experiment was conducted. The result showed that the thermal efficiency was 17% average and the electrical efficiency of the PV module was about $10.2%{\sim}11.5%$, both depending on solar radiation, inlet water temperature and ambient temperature.
Thermal performance of an impinging cooling module for 150 W class high power LEDs have been investigated numerically and experimentally. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effect of several design parameters such as nozzle number, nozzle spacing, coolant flow rate, and impinging distance. The experiments were also carried out in order to validate the numerical results and the comparison between the experimental and numerical results showed good agreement. It is found that the overall thermal resistance of impinging cooling module strongly depends on the nozzle number, nozzle spacing, flow rate, and impinging distance. This results showed the optimized operating condition when number of nozzles is 25, nozzles spacing is 4mm, flow rate is 2.70 lpm, distance between nozzles and impinging surface is 2 mm.
The efficiency of solar cell was about 4[%] in initial stage of photovoltaic industry, but it has quite a lot of efficiency through technology advances. Today, the efficiency of c-Si solar cells is about 17 to 19[%] and the efficiency of PV modules is about 14 to 15 [%]. We called that electrical losses occurred in the Conversion of solar cells to PV modules are CTM loss(Cell To Module loss), the CTM loss typically has a value of about3~5[%]. The more efficiency of solar cell increase, differences are larger because the efficiency decrease owing to physical or technical problems occurred in the Conversion of solar cells to PV modules. In this study, the power loss factors occurred in the Conversion of solar cells to PV modules are analyzed and it is proposed that how to reduce losses of the PV module. The types of power loss factor are (1)losses of front glass and encapsulant(generally EVA sheet), (2)losses by sorting miss, (3)losses by interconnection, (4)losses by the field aging of PV modules. In further study, experimental and evaluation will be conducted to make demonstrate for proposed solutions.
We propose a lens-drive unit composed of an ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) for an auto-focus compact camera module in cellular phones to solve the power consumption problem of voice coil motors which are widely used in commercial products. In this research, an IPMC incorporated into a lens-drive unit is designed to implement a large displacement in low-power consumption by using an anisotropic plasma treatment. Experimental results show that a camera module containing IPMCs can control and maintain the position of the lens by using proportional integral derivative control with a photo-reflective position sensor despite the non-linear actuation behavior of IPMCs. We demonstrate that the fabrication and commercialization of a lens actuator that has a large displacement and low power consumption using IPMCs is possible in the near future.
We determined the feasibility of a fishing camera system using an optical fiber as the fishing line by testing a power-over-fiber (POF) module and multimode optical fiber. Operation of the remote camera module (RCM) without the battery was preferred because the removal of the charging or battery replacement section enabled a waterproof single-body type design. The average efficiency of the photovoltaic power converter (PPC) in the tested POF module was 32.6% at 820 nm, and thus, a high-power laser of at least 1.27 W was required for operating the developed RCM with an electrical dissipation of 413 mW. Because the optical fiber was wound on a fishing reel, composite loss composed of bending and tensile loss occurred. To mitigate the composite loss, we employed a simple holder that showed an improvement in the composite loss of 0.38 dB to 0.8 dB, which was considerably better than the losses without the holder.
In this paper, we describe implementation of personal media gateway (PMG) for applications over BcN networks. PMG is a TV based set-top terminal, which enables transmission of Full D1 high quality video and audio at the speed of maximum 2Mbps. It supports SIP protocol and QoS for the BcN networks. The hardware of the PMG consists of host module, audio/video codec processing module, DTMF module, and remote control I/O module. H.263 and MPEG4 software are implemented in DSP as codec for hi-directional communication and streaming, respectively. G.711 and Ogg-Vorbis are implemented as audio codec. We examined the quality of video using the Video Quality Test Equpment, which was developed by KT Convergence Lab. The experimental results show the video quality of MOS 4.1 and audio quality of MOS 4.3. We expect that PMG will be prospective business models, and create new customer value.
A near infrared (NIR) heating system has advantages over the conventional convection-based systems, in terms of heating uniformity and energy efficiency. When it is over-heated during its operation, the radiation lamp gets blackened, and the life of the radiation module becomes severely limited. The heat transfer system in the module is based on a high operating-temperature, and the radiation makes it difficult to analyze in detail the reliability issue, with an experimental approach alone. We developed a numerical heat-transfer model of the NIR heating system. We applied a ray-tracing method on the radiative heat transport, and a finite volume method on the conductive and convective systems, respectively. The cooling performance of the system is presented, based on the energy and flow distributions in the module. The factors that directly affect the module life are analyzed, such as the surface temperatures of the lamp glass and the reflector, and design improvements are discussed.
Modular steel buildings consist of prefabricated room-sized structural units that are manufactured offsite and installed onsite. The inter-module connections must fulfill the assembly construction requirements and soundly transfer the external loads. This work proposes an innovative assembled connection suitable for modular buildings with concrete-filled steel tube columns. The connection uses pretensioned strands and plugin bars to vertically connect the adjacent modular columns. The moment-transferring performance of this inter-module connection was studied through monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The results showed that because of the assembly construction, the connected sections were separated under lateral bending, and the prestressed inter-module connection performed as a weak semirigid connection. The moment strength at the early loading stage originated primarily from the contact bonding mechanism with the infilled concrete, and the postyield strength depended mainly on the tensioned strands. The connection displayed a self-centering-like behavior that the induced deformation was reversed during unloading. The energy dissipation originated primarily from frictional slipping of the plugin bars and steel strands. The moment transferring ability was closely related to the section dimension and the arrangements of the plugin bars and steel strands. A simplified strength calculation and evaluation method was also proposed, and the effectiveness was validated with the test data.
