  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect on denuclearization and decertification of flue gas by utilizing Mg( OH)$_{2}$ and NaOH as reagents in industrial boiler. We used packed absorber with Tellerette in all cases. And pH of circulation solution, rate of liquid per gas in absorber, COD concentration by pH variation in oxidation basin were inves- tigated. The following conclusions were obtained from experimental results: 1. Concerning running cost for reagents, Mg( OH)$_{2}$ reagent for treatment of flue gas was more economical than NaOH. 2. While Mg( OH )$_{2}$ and NaOH as absorbents were used, then the ratio of denuclearization was 96 and 97% respectively and nitrification was recorded 29 and 25% . 3. In this absorption tests the optimum condition for ratio of liquid per gas, pH and nonregenerable salt concentration of circulation solution were 3.6ℓ /Nm$^{3}$, 6.0, 0.5∼1.0% respectively, 4. Initial COD in oxidation basin was 800 ∼ 1,00099ut after adjusting to pH 7.0, COD of effluent water was less than 20ppm.

  • Extreme waves are generated in a model basin based on directional wave focusing. The targeted wave field is described by double summation method and it is applied to serpent-type wavemaker system. The extreme crest amplitude at a designed location is obtained by syncronizing the phases and focusing the directions of wave components. Two distinguished spectrums of constant wave amplitude and constant wave steepness are adapted to describe the frequency distribution of component waves. The surface profile of generated wave packets is measured by wave guage array and the effects of dominant spectral parameters governing extreme wave characteristics are investigated. It is found that frequency bandwidth, center frequency, shape of frequency spectrum and directional range play a significant role in the wave focusing. In particular, the directional effect significantly enhances the wave focusing efficiency.

  • Because of rapid damping of light and electromagnetic wave, acoustic wave has been widely used for underwater communication. However, the propagation of the acoustic wave is highly dependent on the environment such as water properties(temperature, pressure, salinity), bottom and surface conditions, etc.. This paper deals with the surface reflection effect on the wave propagation in the underwater anechoic basin in KRISO. Both theortical and experimental approaches are performed and the results are compared.

  • The Natural Resource Conservation Service Curve Number(NRCS-CN) method is one of the widely used methods for computation of runoff from a basin. However, NRCS-CN method has weak point in that the spatial land use distribution characteristics are ignored by using area weighted CN value. This study developed a program which can estimate runoff by considering spatial distribution of CN and flow accumulation at the outlet of the watershed by appling Moglen's method. Comparisons between the results from NRCS-CN method and this study showed good agreement with measured data of experimental watersheds. The developed program predicted lower runoff than the conventional NRCS-CN method. As a conclusion, this study proposes a new design direction which can simulate real runoff phenomena. And the developed program could be applied into runoff minimization design for a basin development.

  • Long-term runoff model can be used to establish the effective plan of water reources allocation and the determination of the storage capacity of reservoir. So this study aims at the development of monthly runoff model using artificial neural network technique. For this, it was selected multi-layer neural network(MLN) and radial basis function neural network(RFN) model. In this study, it was applied model to analysis monthly runoff process at the Wi stream basin in Nakdong river which is representative experimental river basin of IHP. For this, multi-layer neural network model tried to construct input 3, hidden 7, and output 1 for each number of layer. As the result of analysis of monthly runoff process using models connected with artificial neural network technique, it showed that these models were effective in the simulation of monthly runoff.

  • Field experiment was performed from August 1996 to June 2000. The pilot plant was installed in Konkuk University and the effluent from septic tank of school building was used as an influent to the treatment basin. The treatment basin was composed of sand and reed. Average removal rate of BOD, SS was about 75.9%, 73.4%, respectively. T-P removal rate was about 47.3%, and T-N removal rate was 19.6%. The reason for poor T-N removal might be due to high influent concentration and short retention times. As operation period increased, BOD removal rates were increased, and SS and T-P removal rates did not change significantly, but T-N removal rates were decreased.

  • In the present paper, a numerical and experimental analysis for a wave energy converter under extreme environmental conditions is carried out. After the definition of design waves, including a 100-year return period stochastic sea state and a deterministic rogue wave condition, a numerical analysis using potential theory and a RANS equations solver are compared with experiments carried out at the Seakeeping Basin at the Technical University of Berlin. Results are discussed with special emphasis on the limits of potential theory methods for the evaluation of extreme wave conditions and the use of the presented methodology for early design stages.

  • This study was investigated to estimate optimal conditions and biological oxic denitrification to treat wastewater with low C/N ratio and high strength total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) concentration by using $A_2O$ fixed biofilm system. The lab-scale experimental system packed with media, which were composed of polyvinylidene chloride fiber (oxic basin) and ceramic ball (anaerobic and anoxic basin), was used. This system was operated with various influent alkalinities at the C/N(TOC/TIN) ratio of 0.5. The study results showed that TOC were removed over 96.0% at all operation conditions. The removal efficiencies over 93.5% for $NH_4{^+}-N$ and 81.8% for TIN were obtained at the alkalinity of about 1210mg/L(Run 5). Among the removal of TIN, 64.9% was occurred by biological denitrification at an oxic basin. It was confirmed through mass balance of alkalinity and nitrogen that the amount of alkalinity produced during biological denitrification at oxic basin was 2.49~3.46 mg Alkalinity/mg $NO_2{^-}-N$, ${\Delta}TOC/{\Delta}DEN$ of 0.34 (Run 5) was obtained at an oxic basin, which was less than the theoretical value of 1.22.

  • Accurate quantitative assessment of flood control effect of side-weir detention basin as a flood countermeasure was highly required, in which one-dimensional HEC-RAS model has been widely utilized in practice. When the submerged overflow occurred particularly driven by limited storage capacity of a given detention basin, HEC-RAS model could not be sufficiently applicable by guaranteeing acceptable accuracy without reliable benchmark dataset. From this perspective, a dedicated unsteady experiment was planned and carried out to physically realize such submerged overflow for accommodating better accuracy. Subsequently, the experimental results were applied to validate and calibrate HEC-RAS unsteady modeling to provide flood control effect of the detention basin for various inflow scenarios. After following this procedure, the modelled results indicated that there appeared within -5% of difference in stage height and maximum 2.4% accuracy to assess the flood control effect, thereby ensuring the calibrated HEC-RAS unsteady model to be accurate with practically acceptable error range.
