We investigated the high dispersion spectra that had been secured at the center of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 with the Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) on October, 20, 2009. We analyzed the forbidden lines of [OI], [SII], [OII], [NII], [ClIII], [ArIII], [OIII], [ArIV], [NeIII], [ArV], and [CaV] in the $3770-9225{\AA}$ wavelength region. The expansion velocities were derived from double Gaussian line profiles of the emission lines, after eliminating the subsidiary line broadening effects. The radial variations of the expansion velocities were obtained by projecting the derived expansion velocities: $19.56-31.93kms^{-1}$ onto the equatorial shell elements of the inner and the outer boundaries of the main shell of 2.5(2.1)" and 3.8(3.6)", according to the ionization potential of each ion. Analysis of equatorial shell spectra indicated that the equatorial shell generally expands in an accelerated velocity mode, but the expansion pattern deviates from a linear velocity growth with radial distance. NGC 7027, of which age is about 1000 years or less, might be still at its early stage. During the first few hundred years, plausibly in its early stage, the main shell of PN expands very slowly and, later, it gradually gain its normal expansion speed.
The spectroscopic properties of bright extragalactic planetary nebulae are reviewed, considering primarily their chemical abundances and their internal kinematics. Low-resolution spectroscopy is used to investigate how the precursor stars of bright planetary nebulae modify their original composition through nucleosynthesis and dredge up. At present, the evidence indicates that oxygen and neon abundances usually remain unchanged, helium abundances are typically enhanced by less than 50%, while nitrogen enhancements span a very wide range. Interpreting these changes in terms of the masses of their progenitor stars implies that the progenitor stars typically have masses or order $1.5M_{\bigodot}$ or less, though no models satisfactorily explain the nitrogen enrichment. High-resolution spectroscopy is used to study the internal kinematics of bright planetary nebulae in Local Group galaxies. At first sight, the expansion velocities are remarkably uniform, with a typical expansion velocity of 18 km/s and a range of 8-28 km/s, independent of the progenitor stellar population. Upon closer examination, bright planetary nebulae in the bulge of M31 expand slightly faster than their counterparts in M31's disk, a result that may extend generally to the planetary nebulae arising from old and young stellar populations. There are no very strong correlations between expansion velocity and global nebular properties, except that there are no large expansion velocities at the highest $H{\beta}$ luminosities (i.e., the youngest objects never expand rapidly). These results independently suggest that bright planetary nebulae arise from a similar mass range in all galaxies. Nonetheless, there are good reasons to believe that bright planetary nebulae do not arise from identical progenitor stars in all galaxies.
Using the spectroscopic data secured with the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph attached to a 3-m telescope at the Lick Observatory, we derived the expansion velocities from various line profiles in the 3600 $\AA$ to 10,000 $\AA$ based on the full width at half maximum and double peak of the high dispersion line profiles. The symmetrical shapes of the permitted line profiles indicate that the permitted line zone is symmetrical e.g., a spherical shell or bipolar + torus structures, which might be evidence of relatively recent ejection from the central star. Most other stronger forbidden lines might be coming from a main shell which appears as a bilateral symmetrical morphology, seen in HST and other ground-based telescopic images. The overall expansion velocities of this main shell structure that are responsible for most lines, seem to show the Hubble type expansion, i.e., accelerating shell. The faster expansion velocities of the permitted OII, NII, NIII and perhaps CII lines that do not suit to the Hubble type expansion, imply the existence of a somewhat smaller inner shell inside the outer main shell. We conclude that the nebular shell consists of a swiftly expanding inner shell and an outer normal shell excited by a central star of about 55,000K. The former compact zone appears to be responsible for the permitted C, N, and O lines while the latter extended shell appears to be responsible for H, He, and forbidden lines. We present some evidence that NGC 6833 be a member of the Galactic halo.
Using the spectral data in the 3700 to $10050{\AA}$ wavelength range secured with the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph (HES) at the Lick observatory, we have investigated the expansion velocities and the physical conditions of the elliptical planetary nebula NGC 6803. Various forbidden and permitted lines, e.g. HI, HeI, HeII, [OIII], [NII], [ArIII], and [SII], indicate complicated but systematic physical conditions variation: electron temperatures $T_{\varepsilon}\;{\sim}\;9000$ - 11000 K and electron number densities $N_{\varepsilon}\;{\sim}\;2000$ - $9000\;cm^{-3}$. The line profile analysis of these ions also indicates the systematic change or the acceleration of the expansion velocities in the range of 10 - $22\;km\;s^{-1}$. We show that the velocity gradient and physical condition found in various ions are closely related to the prolate ellipsoidal structure of NGC 6803. The expansion velocity and the ionic abundance of $O^{2+}$ were derived based on the OII and [OIII] lines. In spite of the discrepancy of ionic abundances derived by the two cases and their line profiles, the expansion velocities of them agree well. We find that the ratios of the red to blue line component of the HeII & OII lines are different from those of the [OIII] or other forbidden lines that indicates a possible involvement of emission of HeII & OII lines. This subtle difference and the different physical condition of the lines are likely to be caused by the elongated geometry and the latitude dependence of the emission zone.
In this paper, the flow characteristics of water in the water supply pipes of a WBC array were evaluated. We simulated the flow velocities and pressures for a standard pipe, an expansion pipe with a concentric reducer, and an expansion pipe with an eccentric reducer using computational fluid dynamics. In the case of the standard pipe, when the inlet flow velocities were 0.5 m/s and 2.0 m/s, the maximum flow velocities at the center of the WBC array were 0.54 m/s and 2.74 m/s, respectively, which were the greatest values among those of all the pipe models considered. In the case of the expansion pipe, the maximum flow velocities at the center of the WBC array were almost the same under the same conditions regardless of the type of reducer. The pressure losses in the pipe due to the concentric and eccentric reducers were found to be (165.09 ${\times}$ inlet $velocity^{1.6677}$) and (210.98 ${\times}$ inlet $velocity^{1.6478}$), respectively. The coefficient of determination at this time was greater than 0.99 and was the same for both the models. As a simulation result, it was found that in order to reduce the pressure loss when pipe with WBC array is connected with a conventional pipe, diameter of the pipe with WBC array at that section should be enlarged by one step, and then connected to the conventional pipe with a concentric reducer.
Many studies of heat transfer on the swirling flow or unswirled flow in a abrupt pipe expansion are widely carried out. The mechanism is not fully found evidently due to the instabilities of flow in a sudden change of the shape and appearance of turbulent shear layers in a recirculation region and secondary vortex near the corner. The purpose of this study is to obtain data through an experimental study of the swirling flow and heat transfer downstream of an abrupt expansion in a circular pipe with uniform heat flux. Experiments were carried out for the turbulent flow nd heat transfer downstream of an abrupt circular pipe expansion. The uniform heat flux condition was imposed to the downstream of the abrupt expansion by using an electrically heated pipe. Experimental data are presented for local heat transfer rates and local axial velocities in the tube downstream of an abrupt 3:1 & 2:1 expansion. Air was used as the working fluid in the upstream tube, the Reynolds number was varied from 60, 00 to 120, 000 and the swirl number range (based on the swirl chamber geometry, i.e. L/d ratio) in which the experiments were conducted were L/d=0, 8 and 16. Axial velocity increased rapidly at r/R=0.35 in the abrupt concentric expansion turbulent flow through the test tube in unswirled flow. It showed that with increasing axial distance the highest axial velocities move toward the tube wall in the case of the swirling flow abrupt expansion. A uniform wall heat flux boundary condition was employed, which resulted in wall-to-bulk temperatures ranging from 24.deg. C to 71.deg. C. In swirling flow, the wall temperature showed a greater increase at L/d=16 than any other L/d. The bulk temperature showed a minimum value at the pipe inlet, it also exhibited a linear increase with axial distance along the pipe. As swirl intensity increased, the location of peak Nu numbers was observed to shift from 4 to 1 step heights downstream of the expansion. This upstream movement of the maximum Nusselt number was accompanied by an increase in its magnitude from 2.2 to 8.8 times larger than fully developed tube flow values.
Using the spectroscopic data secured with the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph at Lick Observatory, we found the physical condition of the planetary Nebula NGC 6210. The spectral line profiles of the permitted and forbidden lines have been analyzed using IRAF and StarLink/Dipso. The hydrogen number densities ($N_H$) are 2,000-20,000 $cm^{-3}$, and the electron temperatures are 8,100-10,300 K based on the forbidden lines. The expansion velocities, derived from the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) and the double peak of the line profiles, are in the range of 10 to $45\;kms^{-1}$. The expansion velocities imply a shell structure with an accelerated nebular gas. We also derived abundances from the permitted lines of CII, CIII, NII, NIII, OII, and OIII, which may have been formed through the fluorescence mechanism. NGC 6210 is likely to be evolved from a progenitor of more than $3M_{\bullet}$, which had been born near the Galactic plane.
In order to look into the comparative flow characteristics between a circular contraction duct and a circular expansion duct the both centerline turbulent structures have been investigated by the hot wire anemometry. Both of the contraction and the expansion have Morel type contours. Means, turbulences, and triple moments have been measured for the turbulent kinetic energy budgets along their centerlines. It is resulted that mean velocities of both have much deviated from theoretical values calculated by one-dimensional continuity considerations, and that for the same upstream condition, the expansion maintains the isotropy in general while the contraction maintains a severe anisotropy through the whole duct. The mean transport of the TKE along the expansion is willing to balance mostly with the dissipation in the TKE budgets while that along the contraction is balanced with the production in the turbulent kinetic energy equation.
Translation of tornadoes is an important feature in replicating the near-ground tornado flow field which has been simulated in previous studies based on Ward-type tornado simulators using relative motion of the ground plane. In this laboratory investigation, effects of translation on the near-ground tornado flow field were studied using the ISU Tornado Simulator that can physically translate over a ground plane. Two translation speeds, 0.15 m/s and 0.50 m/s, that scale up to those corresponding to slowly-moving tornadoes in the field were selected for this study. Compared with the flow field of a stationary tornado, the simulated tornado with translation had an influence on the spatial distribution and magnitude of the horizontal velocities, early reversal of the radial inflow, and expansion of the core radius. Maximum horizontal velocities were observed to occur behind the center of the translating tornado and on the right side of its mean path. An increase in translation speed, resulted in reduction of maximum horizontal velocities at all heights. Comparison of the results with previous studies that used relative motion of the ground plane for simulating translating tornadoes, showed that translation has similar effects on the flow field at smaller radial distances (~2 core radius), but different effects at larger radial distances (~4 core radius). Further, it showed that the effect of translation on velocity profiles is noticeable at and above an elevation of ~0.6 core radius, unlike those in studies based on the relative motion of the ground plane.
The flow characteristics on the centerline in case of free jet, sudden expansion jet and impinging jet have been investigated. Centerline flow behaviors and similaritis with mean velocities, turbulent intensities, shear stresses, isotropic structures and turbulent kinetic energies on the streamwise direction were looked into and compared with three jets, The results show that mean velocities have represented potential core and decayed with similar gradients. The turbulent intensities and shear stresses were presented peak values in the self-preserving region, and then they were in decay. Aeolotropy in the initial region were possible returned to isotropy patterns with asymptotic approach in the downstream region. It has been found that the turbulent kinetic energies for the three cases of jet existed in the similarity and they coincided with Gaussian profile.
