  • The occurrence of PVNS in the TMJ is very rare. We report a case of PVNS which was misdiagnosed as a parotid tumor at first. CT and conventional radiograph revealed a well defined mass demonstrating higher attenuation than adjacent soft tissue. Erosion and expansion of the cortical plate of the mandibular condyle and sclerotic change beneath the margin of the lesion were also shown. MRI demonstrated well defined mass of very low signal intensity on both Tl and T2-weighted images due to ferromagnetic effect of the high concentrated hemosiderin and clearly delineated the extent of the lesion. Histopathologic findings and characteristic appearance of the various imaging methods were described and the usefulness of these images for diagnosis and pretreatment evaluation of PVNS were also discussed.

Model experiments for the reinforcement method of agricultural reservoirs by overtopping

  • In this study, a large laboratory model experiment was conducted with the aim of developing an embankment reinforcement method to prevent overtopping, which is the main cause for the failure of agricultural reservoirs. The model experiment was carried out with concrete and asphalt as a permanent reinforcement method and with geomembrane as the emergency method at a deteriorated homogeneous reservoir. Under the non-reinforced conditions, the pattern of the failure appeared in several scour directions from the downstream slope as the overtopping began, and the width and depth of the erosion were magnified as it gradually moved to the dam crest. Under the conditions reinforced with asphalt and concrete, the overtopping was stabilized. In the case of the concrete reinforcement, it was found that the slope of the riprap boundary exhibited downward erosion by the current; thus, it was necessary to construct an extension up to the riprap joint of the upstream and downstream sides to prevent the expansion of the failure. Under the conditions reinforced with the geomembrane sheet, the overtopping was stabilized, and no seepage was found that required the emergency reinforcement method. Asphalt, concrete, and geomembrane sheet reinforcements have been shown to be capable of delaying failure for about 1 hour and 40 minutes compared to the non-reinforcement conditions. The reinforcement method is considered to be a very effective method to prevent disasters during overtopping. The pore water pressure can be used as useful data to predict the risk of failure at an embankment.

  • In this paper, a model updating procedure based on the response surface method combined with the multi-objective optimization was proposed and applied for updating of the FE models representing a low-rise reinforced concrete building before and after the seismic retrofit. The dynamic properties to be matched were obtained from vibration tests using a small shaker system. By varying the structural parameters according to the central composite design, analysis results from the initial FE model using a commercial software were collected and used to produce two regression functions each of which representing the errors in the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The two functions were used as the objective functions for multi-objective optimization. Final solution was determined by examining the Pareto solutions with one iteration. The parameters representing the stiffnesses of existing concrete, masonry, connection stiffness in expansion joint, new concrete, retrofitted members with steel section jacketing were selected and identified.

  • In traditional electronic packages the die and the substrate are interconnected with fine wire. Wire bonding technology is limited to bond pads around the peripheral of the die. As the demand for I/O increases, there will be limitations with wire bonding technology. Flip chip technology eliminates the need for wire bonding by redistributing the bond pads over the entire surface of the die. Instead of wires, the die is attached to the substrate utilizing a direct solder connection. Although several steps and processes are eliminated when utilizing flip chip technology, there are several new problems that must be overcome. The main issue is the mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the silicon die and the substrate. This mismatch will cause premature solder Joint failure. This issue can be compensated for by the use of an underfill material between the die and the substrate. Underfill helps to extend the working life of the device by providing environmental protection and structural integrity. Flux residues may interfere with the flow of underfill encapsulants causing gross solder voids and premature failure of the solder connection. Furthermore, flux residues may chemically react with the underfill polymer causing a change in its mechanical and thermal properties. As flip chip packages decrease in size, cleaning becomes more challenging. While package size continues to decrease, the total number of 1/0 continue to increase. As the I/O increases, the array density of the package increases and as the array density increases, the pitch decreases. If the pitch is decreasing, the standoff is also decreasing. This paper will present the keys to successful flip chip cleaning processes. Process parameters such as time, temperature, solvency, and impingement energy required for successful cleaning will be addressed. Flip chip packages will be cleaned and subjected to JEDEC level 3 testing, followed by accelerated stress testing. The devices will then be analyzed using acoustic microscopy and the results and conclusions reported.

  • This study is for an example of arbitration of a dining out franchise company in Korea and franchise system currently is expanding and developing to international trade. The main reason for that is franchising has some benefits compared to the existing trades. Korean dining-out industry has largely developed for the past 20 years, but there are little world-class company of the industry, because dining-out industry should go for qualitative as well as quantitative growth at the same time. Korean dining-out industry has adopted licensing and joint-venture among growth strategies, but the franchise system among them seems to have taken its place as a representative strategy for management to develop dining-out industry. The history of Korean dining-out franchise industry is very short and it is true that we have no a management philosophy of accompanying growth with franchise due to a short experiences and recognition of top management or managers and short-term strategy for branch expansion. For a brilliant growth of dining-out franchise industry, to settle disputes through arbitration, in case of disputes taking place, is very important, because the franchise industry is a frequent-trading sector, requires expert-level knowledge, favors a closed examination and also needs a fast solution. As the franchise industry has been sharply growing around the world, there is more possibility of disputes, and various and complicated laws of the industry are related to disputes as well, so much more expert-level knowledge is required to solve disputes. Therefore, affiliated headquarters hope a disclosed settlement of their disputes and their any disputes should be fast settled for the benefits of affiliated members.

A Study on Stress Assessment of Standing Gas Pipeline Subjected to Ground-Subsidence (지반 침하를 고려한 도시가스 입상배관의 응력평가)

  • In this study, 120 cases of damage due to ground subsidence of city gas pipeline which is hanging on apartment outer wall were investigated. From the survey results, it was determined to be approximately 100m~200mm ground subsidence occurred and at severe damage, pipeline was cut and the gap was about 50mm between two cut pipeline. Device for measuring the amount of deformation of standing gas pipeline was designed and fabricated. And installed it on apartment outer wall for measuring the deformation due to ground subsidence, after 5 months measurement the amount of ground subsidence was measured to 1.3mm. Stress assessment was conducted based on results of ground subsidence occurred on standing gas pipeline.

Evaluation of Stress Reduction of Continuous Welded Rail of Sliding Slab Track from Track-Bridge Interaction Analysis (궤도-교량 상호작용 해석에 의한 슬라이딩 슬래브 궤도의 장대레일 응력 저감 효과 분석)

  • Continuous welded rail on bridge structure experiences typically a large amount of additional longitudinal axial forces due to longitudinal track-bridge interaction under temperature and traction/braking load effect. In order to reduce the additional axial forces, special type of fastener, such as ZLR and RLR or rail expansion joint should be applied. Sliding slab track system is known to reduce the effect of track-bridge interaction by the application of a sliding layer between slab track and bridge structure. This study presents track-bridge interaction analysis results of the sliding slab track and compares them with conventional fixed slab track on bridges. The result shows that the sliding slab track can significantly reduce the additional axil forces of the continuously welded rail, and the difference is more significant for long and continuous span bridge.

  • The rapid expansion of buildings and paved roads increases the risk of flood disaster in an urban area. One of the solutions can be the use of permeable pavements. This study evaluated the permeability of permeable blocks used for the roadway pavement. Joint fillers and mat sands of the investigated blocks met the corresponding standards. The flexural strength of the blocks was 5.29 MPa to meet these standards. Based on interior permeability test results after pollution, the four products evaluated were categorized into the following three levels: One for the $1^{st}$ level, one for the $2^{nd}$ level and two for the $3^{rd}$ level. From the field permeability test and pervious concrete infiltration test results nine months after their construction, all the products except one passed the quality standards of 0.1 mm/s.

  • In this study, joining methods with SiC powder as the joining adhesives were studied in order to avoid the residual stresses coming from CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatch between substrate and joining layer. The shear strength and microstructure of joined material between SiC substrates are investigated. The commercial Hexoloy-SA (Saint-Gobain Ceramics, USA) used in this work as substrate material. The fine ${\beta}$-SiC nano-powder which the average particle size is below 30 nm, $Al_2O_3$, $Y_2O_3$, and $SiO_2$ were used as joining adhesives. The specimens were joined with 20MPa and $1400-1900^{\circ}C$ by hot pressing in argon atmosphere. The shear test was performed to investigate the bonding strength. The cross-section of the joint was characterized by using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Estimation of Slab Response of Plate Girder Bridge in Traffic-Induced Vibration by Three-Dimensional Analysis (삼차원 해석에 의한 강합성교 바닥판의 교통유발진동 응답 평가)

  • Recently, it is frequently reported that fatigue damages of deck slabs and floor systems of highway bridges occur under the conditions of increasing weight and traffic of heavy vehicles. These troubles are affected by dynamic wheel load of heavy vehicles running on roadway surface roughness with bump at expansion joint. It is required that this kind of traffic-induced vibration of highway bridges must be analyzed by using three-dimensional models of bridge and vehicle. In this study, the three-dimensional dynamic analysis is carried out, and dynamic responses of deck slab and wheel loads of moving vehicle are estimated according to different vehicle speeds and bump heights. Analytical responses of bridge deck slab are compared with experimental ones which were measured at Umeda entrance bridge of Hanshin Expressway in Osaka.
