  • In this study, the engineering characteristics of outer wall insulation panels according to type of insulation materials, their combination, and the contents of insulation materials were tested. Vermiculate, ceramic bead, perlite and expanded polystyrene were used as insulation materials. Flexural strength and thermal conductivity depending on the insulation materials used were measured. It was found that the flow of fresh mortar significantly decreased with an increase in the contents of insulation materials. In terms of the effect of insulation materials on thermal conductivity, an increase in insulation materials resulted in a decrease of thermal conductivity. In particular, PL and EPS, when used together, have lower thermal conductivity than other materials. Regarding the flexural strength of the hardened mortar, the strength showed a tendency to gradually decrease according to the increase in contents of insulation materials, compared to that of the plain mortar. In terms of the flexural strength depending on various types of insulation materials and its combination, it was found that the flexural strength of cement mortar containing 3% of vermiculate(V)+ceramic bead(CB)+perlite(PL) was the highest among the specimens tested.

  • The analysis of the dynamic behavior of the packaging of a drum washing machine has been carried out under the drop impact conditions. LS-DYNA software is used for performing the finite element analysis, and the validations are performed by comparing with the impact acceleration, effective stress and deformation of cushioned package with high-speed camera during free drop test. By analyzing the cushion characteristics and the design parameters of the original packaging, a packaging with an improved design is developed, and this design is validated on the basis of the results of the distribution test which consists of drop test, vibration test, stacking test, squeez test and so on. The drop impact simulation and analysis methods developed in this study can be adopted to successfully improve the cushioning provided by the packaging and to reduce the cost involved in developing new packaging for drum washing machines.

  • For the distribution of fresh produce, the thermoelectric cooling system combined with thermo electric materials (TEM) and phase change material (PCM) was studied. The PCM used this study was produced by in-situ polymerization technology which referred microencapsulation of hydrocarbon (n-tetradecane and n-hexadecane). In this study, quality characteristics of bell peppers in thermoelectric cooling system combined with TEM and PCM were analyzed and control was placed in an EPS (expanded polystyrene) box. As a result of quality characteristics analysis, weight of bell peppers decreased and moisture content of bell peppers was 90.96~94.43% during storage. Vitamin C content of bell pepper decreased during storage and reduction ratio of control was higher than that of BPT-5 treatment(bell pepper in thermoelectric cooling system with PCM which is kept the temperature at $5^{\circ}C$). The result of color value, on 21 day, ${\Delta}E$ value of BPT-5 treatment was 5.05 while that of control was 41.8. On 21 day, total bacteria count of BPT-5 treated bell pepper shown less than that of control. In conclusion, it suggested that the thermoelectric cooling system combined with PCM improved quality of fresh produce during transportation and storage.

  • The effect of the packing methods for enhancing the shelf life and improving the postharvest quality of the $tah$ $tasai$ Chinese cabbage baby leaf vegetable was studied during storage. Fresh baby leaf vegetables were packed in four commercial packaging types: (1) a non-perforated bag with a 0.03-mm oriented polypropylene (OPP) film; (2) a perforated bag with 1.0-mm-diameter holes on an OPP film; (3) a 0.40-mm polyethylene terephthalate (PET) container with a hinged lid; and (4) an expanded polystyrene (EPS) tray wrapped with a 0.02-mm polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film. The quality parameters, such as the weight loss, moisture content change, color difference, and appearance of the baby leaf vegetables were investigated. The baby leaf vegetables in the PET container and in the non-perforated OPP film bag showed relatively low weight loss, high moisture content, and good external appearance compared to those in the EPS tray and in the perforated OPP film bag during limited storage periods, at $16^{\circ}C$. The PET container also protected the baby leaf vegetables from physical damage. The study results will enable the selection of a better packaging system for extending the freshness and increasing the market ability of baby leaf vegetables.

  • Fires in buildings built using sandwich panels are difficult to extinguish, and the damage caused by the fire spreading through the inner core material is extensive. Sandwich panels consist of a nonflammable material on both sides of an insulation material. The types of insulation material include organic and inorganic insulation materials, but the former are used in more than 80% of the case. Organic insulation is economically advantageous compared to inorganic insulation, but it is vulnerable to fire. Therefore, the damage caused by sandwich panel fires is higher than that for general fires. In the case of the noxious gas analyzer test, the panel is tested with three round holes having a diameter of 25 mm, in order to determine the risk of the core material, but the cone calorimeter test is carried out using a sandwich panel. In this study, the cone calorimeter test was conducted to examine the fire risk of the composite material when heated on a nonflammable surface, exposed to the core material through a hole, and heated directly the core material. The type of organic insulation employed was flame retardant EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), and the test specimens were tested in three types of sandwich panel, a perforated sandwich panel and single core material. The purpose of this study is to propose a method of measuring the fire risk of the core materials of composite materials using the cone calorimeter test.
